Two Islands, One Port — St. Maarten Done Right

Netherlands

Quick Facts: Philipsburg, Sint Maarten | Kingdom of the Netherlands (Dutch side) | A.C. Wathey Cruise & Cargo Facility | Docked (direct pier, no tender) | 1.5 km to Front Street | UTC−4 (Atlantic Standard Time, year-round)

Philipsburg is the capital of the Dutch side of St. Maarten/St. Martin — a dual-nation island that gives you duty-free Caribbean shopping, world-class beaches, and a French bistro lunch all in one shore day. The single most important planning tip: the island is split between the Netherlands and France, and crossing the border is completely open — no passport check, no hassle — so plan your day across both sides.

Port & Terminal Information

The A.C. Wathey Cruise & Cargo Facility is one of the Caribbean’s busiest cruise ports, with 3 piers capable of handling the largest ships afloat. You dock directly — no tender, no waiting — which means you’re off the ship and moving within minutes of clearance.

Inside the terminal complex you’ll find ATMs (US dollars and Euros both widely accepted), a tourist information desk, duty-free shops, Wi-Fi (spotty — don’t rely on it), and taxi/minibus dispatch just outside the exit gates. There’s no formal luggage storage at the terminal. The pier strip has souvenir stalls, car rental booths, and a water taxi dock. Front Street, the main shopping and restaurant drag, is a flat 15-minute walk east along the boardwalk.

Getting to the City

  • On Foot — The boardwalk walk from the pier to Front Street takes 15–20 minutes and is completely flat and shaded in parts. Perfectly manageable in the Caribbean heat if you start early. Great Bay Beach runs the entire length — you can walk on the sand if you prefer.
  • Water Taxi — The fastest option: $7 USD each way, runs continuously during ship hours, drops you right at the heart of Front Street. Buy tickets at the dock outside the terminal exit.
  • Taxi — Fixed-rate taxis wait at the terminal. Port to Philipsburg town center runs around $6–8 USD per person. Confirm the rate before you get in — meters are rare and fares are per person, not per vehicle. Tipping $1–2 is standard.
  • Minibus — Local white vans labeled with route numbers run along the main road for around $1.50–2 USD. Efficient and authentic, but schedules are loose. Catch them on the main road just past the terminal gate.
  • Ship Shore Excursion — Worth it specifically for Maho Beach (plane-watching), island circumnavigation tours, or if you’re nervous about navigating solo. For anything in Philipsburg itself, skip the ship’s offering and go independently.

Top Things to Do in Philipsburg St. Maarten

St. Maarten punches well above its size — 37 square miles, 37 nationalities, and more to do than most islands twice its size. Here’s where to spend your hours.

Must-See

1. Front Street Shopping & Boardwalk (free) — The duty-free shopping street of the Dutch Caribbean. Jewelry, liquor, electronics, and perfume at genuinely competitive prices. The parallel boardwalk along Great Bay is where locals eat lunch. Allow 1–2 hours.

2. Sint Maarten Museum ($3 USD) — A small but surprisingly rich museum covering the island’s Arawak past, salt industry, and Hurricane Luis devastation. Located at 7 Front Street. Roughly 45 minutes well spent before the heat peaks.

3. Private Island Sightseeing Tour (from $75 USD) — If you only book one thing, a private tour on Viator 🎟 Book: Private Tour in St. Maarten covers both the Dutch and French sides in 5 hours with a local guide who knows the shortcuts, the viewpoints, and where to actually eat. From $75 per person.

Beaches & Nature

4. Great Bay Beach (free) — Literally steps from the boardwalk, Great Bay is clean, calm, and lined with beach bars. No entry fee, chairs rent for $5–10. Ideal if you have 2–3 hours and don’t want to go far.

5. Orient Bay Beach, French Side (free, sunbeds ~€15) — The marquee beach of the French side — turquoise, wide, and dotted with excellent beach restaurants. A 20-minute drive from Philipsburg. Clothing-optional at the northern end. Half-day minimum.

6. Jet Ski Ride (from $80 USD) — Blast across Simpson Bay Lagoon or along the coastline on a jet ski booked through Viator 🎟 Book: Jetski Ride in St Maarten. Around 30 minutes on the water; pick-up arrangements confirmed at booking.

7. Pic Paradis Hike, French Side (free) — The island’s highest point at 424 meters. A 2-hour round trip through lush forest with views over both coastlines on a clear day. Take water and wear proper shoes.

Day Trips

8. Marigot, French Side (free) — The French capital is a 25-minute drive from Philipsburg. Visit the morning market, browse French boutiques, eat a proper crêpe, and see Fort Louis overlooking the harbor. Allow 2–3 hours.

9. Sunset Painting Class on the Beach (from $60 USD) — A genuinely memorable experience: a 2-hour beach painting class on GetYourGuide run at sunset from Philipsburg. You leave with a canvas painting and a story. Only viable on late-departure days.

Family Picks

10. Maho Beach & Plane Spotting (free) — Planes land at Princess Juliana Airport so low they skim the beach fence at rooftop height. Kids (and adults) go absolutely wild. Grab a drink at Sunset Bar and watch the show. 20 minutes from port by taxi (~$15 USD each way per person).

11. America Cup Sailing (from $80 USD) — Race America’s Cup 12-meter yachts crewed by you and fellow passengers. Runs most mornings, child-friendly, and wildly fun. Book on GetYourGuide to secure your spot.

Off the Beaten Track

12. Loterie Farm, French Side (entry from $10 USD) — A private nature reserve with zip lines, a hidden pool, and a gorgeous open-air restaurant. Far less touristy than the beaches and genuinely beautiful. Allow 2–3 hours.

13. Dawn Beach, Dutch Side (free) — The windward coast’s best-kept secret. Rougher surf, fewer crowds, and stunning views toward St. Barths on a clear day. 15 minutes from Philipsburg by taxi.

What to Eat & Drink

St. Maarten’s food scene reflects its dual identity — French bistro technique meets Caribbean ingredients, Dutch influence, and a creole heart. Prices are USD on the Dutch side, Euros on the French, and both are accepted almost everywhere.

  • Johnny Cake with saltfish — The local breakfast staple; find it at roadside stands near the market for $3–5 USD
  • Lolos at Grand Case, French Side — Open-air BBQ shacks serving ribs, chicken, and lobster; budget $15–25 per person; this is the best casual meal on the island
  • Fresh lobster, Marigot Market — Grilled to order, roughly €20–28; Friday market is the busiest and best
  • Guavaberry liqueur — The island’s signature spirit, made from fermented guavaberries; pick up a bottle at the Guavaberry Emporium on Front Street (~$20 USD)
  • Ric’s Place, Front Street — Solid local food steps from the boardwalk; mahi-mahi sandwich around $12 USD
  • Turtle Pier Bar, Simpson Bay — Cold Carib beers and fried fish by the lagoon; $8–14 USD per dish

Shopping

Front Street is the duty-free heartland — jewelry at shops like Diamonds International, Columbian Emeralds, and Little Switzerland; rum and liquor at prices that genuinely beat home; and perfume and cosmetics well below US retail. Budget shoppers should hit the open-air market stalls at the pier exit for handmade jewelry, sarongs, and local spice blends ($5–15 range). If you’re serious about jewelry or watches, bring price comparisons from home — deals exist but so does pressure selling.

Skip the generic souvenir T-shirts (wildly overpriced near the pier) and the fake designer goods that appear near the market. The best authentic buys are Guavaberry products, local hot sauces, and hand-rolled cigars. On the French side, Marigot has better boutique fashion and beauty products at French pharmacy prices.

How to Plan Your Day

  • 4 hours ashore: Water taxi to Front Street → Sint Maarten Museum (45 min) → boardwalk lunch at Ric’s Place → Great Bay Beach for 1 hour → duty-free shopping → water taxi back. Simple, stress-free, covers the essentials.
  • **6–7 hours a
