Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Corfu Old Town is the best use of most cruise calls. It is attractive, easy to do independently, and does not waste half your day in transit.
Best Beach
Glyfada is the best all-around sandy beach for a classic beach day, but it takes real travel time. For a shorter outing, Faliraki near Old Town is easier though smaller and more about a quick swim than a full beach day.
With Kids
Old Town plus the Old Fortress is the safest easy family plan. If your kids need water time more than history, pick one beach and keep the rest of the day simple.
Only 3-4 Hours
Take the shuttle or taxi into Corfu Old Town, walk the Liston, the Spianada, old lanes, and the Old Fortress, then stop for coffee or lunch and head back. Do not try to add a far beach unless your ship has a long day.
Cheapest Option
Use the cruise shuttle or local bus into town, walk Corfu Old Town and the Spianada, and add a low-cost bakery lunch. Budget roughly $5-15 USD plus any shuttle fare; check current rates.
What To Avoid
Do not cram Paleokastritsa, Achilleion, and a beach into one short port call. Also do not assume the port area itself is scenic; it is mainly a working arrival point.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Port Overview

Corfu is one of the better Mediterranean cruise stops because it gives you real choices. You can do a compact and worthwhile town day, add a fortress or museum, or head for a proper beach if you are willing to spend time getting there.

Is It Safe?

Corfu is generally a straightforward port for independent cruising. The main issues are the usual ones: pickpocket risk in crowded Old Town lanes, traffic around the port, and overpriced tourist menus in the busiest squares.

Accessibility & Walkability

The port itself is easier than the old center, but Corfu Old Town has uneven paving, curbs, some slopes, and tight lanes. Wheelchair users and anyone with limited mobility should strongly consider a taxi or accessible tour rather than walking from port.

Outside the Terminal

Once you get to Old Town, the mood changes completely. You move from industrial arrival zone to elegant arcades, Venetian-style streets, and one of the more enjoyable town centers on the cruise circuit.

Beaches Near the Port

Local Food & Drink

Corfu is a good port for an actual sit-down meal, especially in or near Old Town after some walking. You will find plenty of Greek staples, seafood, pastries, and cafes; the trick is to move a street or two away from the most obvious tourist strips if you want better value.

Shopping

Old Town has the usual mix of tourist shops, olive wood, ceramics, soaps, local food items, and jewelry. It is pleasant enough for browsing, but this is not a destination you should choose mainly for shopping.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • If your ship offers a shuttle to town, it is often worth it just to skip the dull port walk.
  • Corfu Old Town is the safest independent choice if your port call is short or tender timing is tight.
  • Do not plan both a far beach and multiple town sights unless you have a long day and high tolerance for rushing.
  • Heat and sun are real here; the old streets offer some shade, the port road does not.
  • Taxi demand spikes hard when several ships are in, so leave extra time for the return.
  • If beach time matters most, commit to one beach and stop pretending you will also do the whole town properly.
  • For lower stress, be back in the port area earlier than you think you need if traffic is busy.
