The appeal here is not a single standout sight but rather the flat, easy-cycling landscape, the waterfront atmosphere, and the proximity to better-known destinations in the Gooi region — particularly Naarden-Vesting, one of the best-preserved fortified towns in the Netherlands. Hilversum, the Dutch media city with strong Dudok modernist architecture, is also reachable within 20-30 minutes.

Be realistic: Huizen itself is not a destination cruise port. It rewards travellers who either enjoy a genuinely local Dutch town experience or treat it as a base to explore the wider region by bike or bus. If you are expecting Amsterdam-style canals and world-class museums at the doorstep, adjust your expectations before you step ashore.

Outside the Terminal

For something more substantial, the town has a handful of restaurants covering Dutch, Italian, and international basics. Naarden-Vesting, if you make the cycling trip, has better dining options inside the fortress walls and is worth timing around lunch.

Shopping

Shopping in Huizen is practical rather than tourist-focused. The town centre has a standard Dutch high street — Albert Heijn supermarket, a few clothing shops, and a pharmacy. The local market (Thursday and Saturday) is the best shopping experience for visitors: Dutch cheese, stroopwafels, fresh bread, and flowers make easy and inexpensive gifts. Do not come expecting souvenir shops or craft markets — there are none to speak of.
