The primary draw is world-class diving and snorkeling in one of the Indian Ocean's richest marine ecosystems. Expect calm lagoon water, abundant fish, and coral. If you're a non-diver, a beach day is the main option. Restaurants are minimal; food is expensive or unavailable outside the resort. This port is best suited to marine enthusiasts on full-day itineraries who book excursions in advance.

Is It Safe?

Alphonse is safe. Petty theft is extremely rare; there is minimal crime on the atoll. The main safety concern is the ocean: currents outside the lagoon are strong, and the reef has sharp coral. Wear reef shoes and follow guide instructions during water activities. Sun exposure is intense; dehydration is a real risk. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen (SPF 50+), and a hat. Mosquitoes are present, especially at dusk; consider insect repellent.

Accessibility & Walkability

Alphonse is not wheelchair-accessible. The tender dock is a simple beach landing with no ramp or formal infrastructure. The atoll is flat, but sand is soft and walking is slow. Anyone with mobility challenges should stay aboard.

Outside the Terminal

You'll step off the tender directly onto white sand. The beach is stunning but unmarked—no shops, no signs, no crowds. The resort (if visible) is set back in palms. Within 10 minutes you'll either be swimming, waiting for an excursion, or sitting under a tree wondering what to do next. Bring water and shade, or head straight into the water.
