Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Spend the morning on Cleopatra Beach, then take a taxi or minibus up to Alanya Castle for the panoramic views before returning to the ship. It covers both sides of what makes Alanya worth visiting.
Best Beach
Cleopatra Beach (Kleopatra Plajı) — the most famous and best-maintained stretch, with loungers, cafes, and calm water. It is the default choice for good reason.
With Kids
Cleopatra Beach is shallow and gentle near the shoreline, making it ideal for families. Older kids with energy can take the minibus up to Alanya Castle for the views and the Red Tower near the harbor.
Only 3-4 Hours
Head straight to Cleopatra Beach — it is about 10 minutes by taxi from the port, the sand is clean, and you can be in the water within 20 minutes of stepping off the ship. Skip the castle if time is tight.
Cheapest Option
Walk to the Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) at the harbor — entry is around $2-4 USD — then stroll the bazaar and eat a pide or gözleme lunch at a local spot for under $8 USD total.
What To Avoid
Avoid the organized castle tours sold at the port — they eat time and charge a significant premium over the minibus fare. Also skip the boat caves tours unless you have a full day; the queue-to-payoff ratio is poor on a short port call.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Port Overview

Alanya is a mid-sized Turkish resort town on the eastern end of the Turkish Riviera, about 135 km east of Antalya. Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers into the harbor area near the Red Tower — tendering adds roughly 15-20 minutes each way, so factor that into your timing. Some larger vessels may dock at the commercial pier; check your ship's itinerary in advance.

The town has three clear draws: Cleopatra Beach (long, sandy, and genuinely good), Alanya Castle on the dramatic rocky headland, and a low-key bazaar quarter good for cheap food and souvenirs. It is not a sophisticated cultural destination, but it delivers a relaxed, sun-and-history combo that works well for a shore day.

Alanya is honest in what it is — a popular Turkish beach resort that happens to have a well-preserved medieval castle sitting above it. If you want that combination without the prices of the Aegean coast, this port delivers. If you came expecting a polished city experience, you will be mildly disappointed.

Is It Safe?

Alanya is a low-risk destination for cruise passengers. Petty theft is uncommon but not unheard of in crowded bazaar areas — keep bags closed and don't leave valuables unattended on the beach. The main annoyance is persistent vendor and tour-seller attention around the harbor and castle entrance; a firm, polite 'no thank you' is usually sufficient.

Road traffic on the main coastal road can be fast — use crossings and stay aware when walking along the promenade. The castle path has uneven stone surfaces in places, so wear shoes with grip rather than flip-flops if you plan to go up.

Accessibility & Walkability

The harbor area and beachfront promenade are mostly flat and manageable for limited mobility. Cleopatra Beach has some accessible entry points, though the sand itself presents the usual challenges for wheelchairs. The castle is not realistically accessible — the climb involves steep, uneven cobbled paths and no lift or ramp infrastructure. The Red Tower near the harbor is a shorter, more achievable historic site for those unable to tackle the full castle hill.

Outside the Terminal

After tendering in, you arrive near the Red Tower and the old harbor. The area is immediately commercial — souvenir stalls, tour sellers, and boat excursion booths line the quay. It is mildly hectic but not overwhelming. Taxis are visible within a 2-minute walk. If you walk left along the harbor, you reach the Red Tower and the base of the castle path in under 5 minutes. If you walk right along the seafront, the beach promenade begins shortly after.

Beaches Near the Port

Cleopatra Beach (Kleopatra Plajı)

The best and most popular beach in Alanya — long, sandy, and well-serviced with sunbeds, cafes, and beach bars. Water is clear and relatively calm. Gets busy midday but rarely unpleasant.

Distance
1.5 km from harbor
Cost
Free entry; sunbed hire check locally for current rates
Best for
Most cruisers — the default choice and the right one

Keykubat Beach

A longer, slightly quieter stretch to the east of the castle promontory. Less dominated by sunbed operators than Cleopatra Beach, with more public space. A good alternative if you want more room.

Distance
2-3 km east of harbor
Cost
Mostly free; some paid sunbed sections
Best for
Cruisers who want fewer crowds and more public beach access

Local Food & Drink

Alanya is good value for food. In and around the bazaar you will find pide (Turkish flatbread pizza), gözleme (thin stuffed pancakes), fresh fish, and kebabs at prices well below Western European resort levels. A full sit-down lunch for two with drinks typically runs $12-20 USD at a local restaurant. Avoid the overpriced waterfront tourist traps immediately adjacent to the harbor — walk one or two streets inland and quality improves while prices drop.

Look for small lokantas (Turkish lunch spots) near the bazaar for honest, cheap daily dishes. Freshly squeezed pomegranate or orange juice from street carts is a local staple and worth trying. If you are on Cleopatra Beach, the beach cafes are convenient but charge resort prices — fine for a cold drink, less ideal for a full meal.

Shopping

The bazaar area near the Red Tower has the widest range — leather goods, ceramics, spices, Turkish towels (peshtemals), and evil eye trinkets. Quality varies enormously. Haggling is expected at stall markets but not in fixed-price shops. For a practical, honest souvenir, Turkish towels and small ceramic pieces represent the best value-to-quality ratio. Avoid high-pressure carpet shops unless you genuinely want to spend time and money — the sales tactics can be intense.

Money & Currency

Currency
Turkish Lira (TRY)
USD Accepted?
Yes
Card Payments
Cards accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, and some shops. Small stalls and local cafes often prefer cash.
ATMs
ATMs are available in the town center and near the harbor. Draw local currency for the best rates at smaller vendors.
Tipping
10% at restaurants is appreciated but not mandatory. Round up for taxis.
Notes
The Turkish Lira fluctuates significantly. Check the current rate before arrival. USD and EUR are widely understood in tourist areas, but you will often get a worse informal exchange rate than drawing local cash.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
May, June, September, October
Avoid
No months are truly bad for visiting, but July and August are very hot and crowded
Temperature
22-35°C (72-95°F) across summer months; cooler and pleasant in shoulder season
Notes
Alanya has one of Turkey's warmest and sunniest climates. Summer heat midday (July-August) can be draining if you are exploring on foot — plan the castle visit for morning or late afternoon.

Airport Information

Airport
Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport (GZP)
Distance
Approximately 45 km east of the port
Getting there
Taxi, private transfer, or shuttle bus. Antalya Airport (AYT) is 125 km west and serves far more international routes.
Notes
Most cruisers flying in pre- or post-cruise will use Antalya Airport. Gazipaşa is more convenient for Alanya but has limited routes.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • If your ship is tendering, factor in 15-20 minutes each way for the tender boat — start your morning plan with that buffer in mind.
  • Take the castle shuttle minibus up and walk down — the descent gives better views and you can stop at the small tea houses along the path.
  • Dress codes apply at the castle and mosque areas — carry a light scarf or cover-up if you are in beachwear.
  • Negotiate taxi fares before you get in the car, not after — ask 'how much to Cleopatra Beach?' and agree on it upfront.
  • The market stalls near the harbor are aimed squarely at tourists — walk two or three streets into the bazaar for more authentic shopping at better prices.
  • Check your ship's all-aboard time carefully and leave a 30-minute buffer if tendering — tender queues back to the ship can build up in the late afternoon.
