Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Spend the morning at the Friday cheese market on Waagplein — it runs April through September — then walk the canal ring and have lunch at a canal-side café. That sequence is what Alkmaar is actually good at.
Book Alkmaar Friday Cheese Market on Viator
Best Beach
Not relevant — Alkmaar is inland and not a beach destination.
With Kids
The Alkmaar Cheese Museum is interactive and kid-friendly, and the Friday cheese market porters carrying giant wheels on wooden sledges is genuinely entertaining for all ages.
Only 3-4 Hours
Walk straight into the old town, hit the Waagplein cheese market square, duck into a cheese shop for a tasting, stroll the Luttik Oudorp canal, and grab a local beer or herring at a waterside café. You'll cover it all comfortably.
Cheapest Option
Walk the old town and canals for free, grab a stroopwafel or herring from a street stall ($2-4 USD), and skip the paid museums. A full, satisfying few hours for almost nothing.
What To Avoid
Don't arrive on a non-Friday expecting the cheese market to be running — it only operates Friday mornings in season and the square feels flat without it. Also skip the touristy souvenir cheese shops on the main drag in favor of local producers just off the square.

Alkmaar Friday Cheese Market

The genuine article — cheese porters in traditional guild colors carry enormous wheels of Gouda and Edam on wooden sledges across Waagplein while traders perform centuries-old weighing rituals. It runs Friday mornings April through mid-September, typically 10am-1pm. If your ship calls on a Friday in season, this is the single best reason to go ashore.

4

Canal Walk & Luttik Oudorp

Alkmaar's inner canal ring is picturesque and walkable in under an hour. The Luttik Oudorp canal is the most photogenic stretch — lined with historic merchants' houses, small bridges, and houseboats. Walk the full loop at your own pace.

Alkmaar Cheese Museum (Hollands Kaasmuseum)

Housed inside the historic Waaggebouw weigh house on the cheese market square. Small but well-curated — covers the history of Dutch cheese production, trade weights, and the guild system. Better than it sounds and quick to get through.

Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar

The city museum covers local history and has a respectable collection of Dutch Golden Age paintings. Not world-class, but genuinely good for a smaller city museum and rarely crowded. Good rainy-day option.

Day Trip to Amsterdam by Train

Direct trains from Alkmaar station reach Amsterdam Centraal in about 35-40 minutes. If you've already seen Alkmaar or your ship calls on a non-cheese-market day, Amsterdam is a realistic and worthwhile upgrade. Confirm your all-aboard time and give yourself a comfortable buffer.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Port Overview

Alkmaar sits in North Holland about 40 km north of Amsterdam. River cruise ships and smaller expedition vessels typically moor along the town canal — the pier puts you within easy walking distance of the historic center, often under 10 minutes on foot. This is not a big-city port and it doesn't pretend to be.

The town's claim to fame is its weekly cheese market, one of the most authentic surviving cheese markets in the Netherlands, running Friday mornings from April through mid-September. Outside that window, Alkmaar is a pleasant but quiet Dutch canal town — worth a half day, not necessarily a full one.

If your ship calls on a Friday in season, you're in luck — plan your morning around the market. If not, the old town, canals, and local museums still give you a solid few hours ashore, especially if you have no interest in the Amsterdam crowds. Alternatively, Alkmaar makes a decent launch point for a day trip to Amsterdam by direct train.

Is It Safe?

Alkmaar is a low-risk, safe Dutch town. Petty theft is not a significant concern compared to larger tourist cities, though normal awareness applies — don't leave bags unattended at café tables or in bike baskets.

Traffic is the main hazard for visitors unused to Dutch cycling culture. Bike lanes are busy, bikes move fast, and pedestrians stepping into a bike lane get no warning. Stay on designated pedestrian paths and look both ways before crossing any lane.

Accessibility & Walkability

The old town is flat, which helps, but the historic center has uneven cobblestones throughout. Wheelchair users and those with mobility aids will find the cobblestones challenging on most streets. The main shopping thoroughfare (Langestraat) has smoother sections. Canal bridges involve short inclines but nothing steep.

The pier itself is generally flat and accessible. If mobility is a concern, the walk from ship to Waagplein is short enough to manage with assistance on a good surface day, but the cobblestone sections require care.

Outside the Terminal

Stepping off the pier in Alkmaar, you'll find yourself in a working Dutch town rather than a tourist bubble. There's no cruise terminal complex or row of souvenir stands — just a canal path leading into the old town. Within a couple of minutes you'll start seeing canal bridges, Dutch gabled houses, and the first café signs. The atmosphere is genuine and unhurried. Follow the canal toward the town center and you'll hit Waagplein naturally.

Local Food & Drink

Alkmaar's food scene is straightforward Dutch with a handful of genuinely good options. The canal-side cafés around Waagplein and Luttik Oudorp are the best spots for lunch — look for local fish dishes, Dutch stamppot, and of course local cheese plates. Herring stands (haringkraam) appear around the market area and are cheap, fresh, and the authentic local snack at $2-4 USD.

The Langestraat shopping street has plenty of cafés and brown cafés (bruine kroegen) for a coffee or local beer. Avoid the most tourist-facing restaurants right on the cheese market square — the quality-to-price ratio is better one street back. Budget lunch runs $12-20 USD per person at a sit-down café; street food is $2-6 USD.

Shopping

The main shopping street, Langestraat, runs through the center and has a good mix of independent Dutch retailers, clothing shops, and a few local specialty stores. Cheese is the obvious buy — local Gouda and Edam from reputable producers at the market or in specialist cheese shops are genuinely worth bringing home, especially compared to supermarket versions elsewhere.

Skip the mass-produced clog-and-windmill souvenir shops. The market area has better options including locally produced preserves, Dutch liqueurs, and artisan products. Prices are reasonable by Dutch standards.

Money & Currency

USD Accepted?
No
Card Payments
Very high — contactless and chip card payment accepted almost everywhere including market stalls and small cafés
ATMs
Several ATMs in the town center near the main shopping street
Tipping
Not mandatory in the Netherlands. Rounding up or leaving 5-10% at restaurants is appreciated but optional.
Notes
Some smaller market vendors and street food stalls are cash only — carry a small amount of euros as backup.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
May, June, July, August — longest days, best chance of dry weather, cheese market in full operation
Avoid
November through February — cold, wet, grey, and the cheese market is closed
Temperature
14-22°C (57-72°F) in summer cruise season
Notes
North Holland weather is changeable year-round. Even in summer, pack a light rain layer. Wind is constant and can make it feel cooler than the temperature suggests.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Check your sailing itinerary in advance — if Alkmaar falls on a Friday between April and mid-September, plan your morning around the cheese market; it's the entire point of the port.
  • The train to Amsterdam is fast and cheap — if you've visited Alkmaar before or cheese markets aren't your thing, Amsterdam is a better use of a full port day.
  • Carry a small amount of euros in cash; some market stalls and street food vendors don't accept cards despite the Netherlands being generally card-friendly.
  • The old town is genuinely walkable from the pier — don't pay for a taxi or tour transfer to cover a 10-minute stroll.
  • Wear comfortable shoes with grip; historic cobblestones look great but are uneven and can be slippery when wet.
  • Buy cheese directly from market producers rather than from souvenir shops on the main drag — better quality, often lower price, and you can try before you buy.
