Most ships dock at Pebbly Beach Pier; some use tender service depending on vessel size.
Avalon is a small, car-free beach town on Catalina Island's leeward coast, about 26 miles off the Southern California mainland. Ships anchor or dock at the main pier; the entire town is compressed into a mile-long crescent around Crescent Beach. There are no resorts, minimal shopping, and no nightlife—this is a day-port for beach and water activities only.
Why go ashore: World-class snorkeling and diving in kelp forests with abundant sea life (garibaldi, kelp bass, sheephead, sea lions, occasional leopard sharks). The water is clear, calm, and accessible from shore. Families and non-divers can relax on the beach or rent a glass-bottom boat. Why not: Avalon is tiny, overcrowded on cruise days, and offers limited onshore diversity. If you want restaurants, shops, or culture, you'll be disappointed.

Rent snorkel gear on the beach ($15–25/day) and wade into Crescent Beach, or book a guided snorkel/dive tour with Ironwood Diving, Casino Dive Shop, or similar operators. Kelp forests near Lover's Cove are stunning and teeming with fish, sea urchins, and occasionally sea lions. Dives are 40–60 minutes and ideal for intermediate swimmers
⚡ Popular — books out early. Reserve before you sail.
The main public beach is clean, calm, and lifeguard-monitored. Rent a beach chair, swim, wade, or simply lounge. Good option for families with young kids or those who want to avoid structured activities. Sunset views are excellent in late afternoon
See the kelp forest without getting wet. Tours depart near the pier and show fish, sea urchins, and occasionally sea lions. Also available: scenic island tours by golf cart to Wrigley Memorial and overlooks (if time and budget allow)
Private beach club 0.5 miles from downtown (5–10 minute walk or $2 shuttle). Calmer water, restaurant/bar, cabana rentals, and a more upscale vibe. Admission fee required; crowded on cruise days

Avalon is safe and well-policed. Petty theft is minimal. The main hazards are water-related: strong currents near the pier, occasional sea lions that should not be approached, and rare leopard shark sightings (non-aggressive, avoid murky water). Sun exposure is intense; bring sunscreen and hydration. Rip currents are possible but uncommon in Crescent Beach. Follow local snorkel guides' advice and respect posted water advisories.
Crescent Beach and the downtown pier are flat and easily walkable for wheelchairs and limited mobility. The town has paved paths and accessible restrooms. Beyond the beach strip, terrain becomes steep (stairs, unpaved trails). Most tour operators can accommodate wheelchairs with advance notice. Tender access may apply if ships anchor offshore; check with your cruise line.
Exit the pier directly onto Crescent Beach. You'll see beach-goers, snorkel rental shacks, and casual restaurants lining the shoreline within 50 feet. The smell of sunscreen and sea salt is immediate. Downtown (souvenir shops, ice cream, restaurants) is a 5-minute walk left along the beach. The town is visibly small—you can walk from end to end in 15 minutes. Crowds build fast on cruise days (July–August); arrive early if you want beach space or a rental.
Main public beach, sandy, calm, lifeguard-monitored, snorkel-friendly. Crowded on cruise days but good for families and beginners. Marine life visible from shore
Prettier, calmer private beach club with restaurant, bar, and cabanas. Pricey entry but less crowded than Crescent. Great for upscale relaxation and lunch
Marine preserve just west of Crescent Beach. Excellent snorkeling, kelp forest, diverse fish. Not a traditional beach but the best water for experienced snorkelers
Avalon has casual beachfront eateries and a handful of sit-down restaurants, but nothing fancy or diverse. Expect fish tacos, fish & chips, burgers, pizza, and salads; prices run $12–20 per entree. The harbor is thick with taco vendors and casual cafes. For a proper meal, try The Lobster Trap or Bluewater Seafood Market & Cafe (both mid-range, $15–30). Ice cream, smoothies, and snacks are abundant. Bring cash or a card—most places accept both. Plan to eat light and quick unless you're willing to sacrifice beach time for a sit-down dinner.
Downtown Avalon has souvenir shops, t-shirt stands, and a small market (Island Company, Catalina Island Company store), but no major retailers or bargains. Expect typical cruise-port markup. Sunscreen, snorkel gear, and basic sundries are available at beach shacks and the general store. If you need something specific, check on-site availability; don't rely on stores. The shopping is a 10-minute walk from the pier and not a draw; most cruisers skip it.
Crescent Beach, downtown shops, and most attractions are within a 5–10 minute walk of the pier. Steep terrain in residential areas limits further exploration
Rental shops near the pier offer golf carts for $40–70/hour to explore Wrigley Memorial, scenic overlooks, and less-crowded beaches
Depart near the pier; no walking needed. Offers kelp forest views without getting wet

Yes. Crescent Beach has calm, shallow water ideal for beginners. Rent gear on-site ($15–25), wade in gradually, and stay near the shore. Book a beginner-friendly guided snorkel tour ($60–90) for extra confidence and instruction. Avoid strong currents near the pier and follow any posted warnings
On busy cruise days (summer), snorkel tours and rental gear can fill up or have 1–2 hour waits. Pre-booking via Viator or cruise line is safer, but walk-up availability exists. Glass-bottom boats and casual snorkel rentals are less rushed. Arrive early to maximize choices
3–4 hours is ideal for snorkeling and beach time. 2 hours is a tight squeeze but doable if you skip the pier walk and head straight to snorkel. 5+ hours allows for a guided tour, lunch, and leisure. Avalon is small; you won't need a full day
