This is a culturally immersive port, not a high-energy shopping destination.

Beppu is very safe. Petty theft is rare; police presence is light but visible. The town is quiet and locals are welcoming to tourists. Central Beppu and major onsen facilities have variable accessibility. Takegawara Bathhouse has accessible entries and staff assist with steps where needed. Outside the Terminal

The cruise terminal is clean, modern, and quiet. Outside, you face a small plaza with a few taxi ranks and a convenience store. Beyond that is a wide road with light traffic and some low-rise commercial buildings—nothing scenic. The town center is not visible from the terminal. The area feels functional rather than charming. Expect to take a taxi within 5 minutes of clearing the terminal building.
