Castaway Cay is a 55-acre private island owned and operated by Disney Cruise Line, located 40 miles southeast of Nassau. Ships dock directly at a purpose-built pier; no tendering required. This is a fully controlled, resort-style port with no independent exploration—no local vendors, no downtown, no street-level culture. Beach access, basic facilities, and some activities are included in your cruise fare; meals, water sports rentals, and premium excursions cost extra.

For Disney Cruise Line passengers, Castaway Cay is a major draw: calm, monitored beaches, snorkeling, character dining, and family-friendly infrastructure make it a low-stress day ashore. For other cruise lines (Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess, Norwegian, Celebrity), the port is available but less marketed and less integrated; you still access the same beaches and activities at the same prices. Most cruisers spend 6–8 hours here; there is nothing to do off-island, so plan your day around swimming, eating, and paid activities.

Is It Safe?

Castaway Cay is one of the safest cruise ports in the Caribbean. The island is privately owned, fully staffed by Disney or cruise-line personnel, and monitored 24/7. There is no crime risk, no vagrant activity, and no petty theft. Beaches are lifeguarded during operating hours. Water quality is regularly tested, and snorkeling areas are roped and supervised. The only realistic concern is sun exposure and dehydration; bring sunscreen and drink water frequently. Do not wander beyond marked zones or attempt to explore the island interior; it is off-limits to passengers.

Accessibility & Walkability

Castaway Cay is highly accessible. Beaches are flat and sandy, with wheelchair-accessible paths from the pier. The tram is wheelchair accessible, and lifts are available for guests with mobility devices entering the water. Accessible restrooms and shaded seating areas are located throughout the island. Strollers are easy to maneuver. The one caveat: sand is soft and can be difficult for some wheelchair users; staff will help you reach hardpacked areas near the waterline.

Outside the Terminal

Upon arrival, you walk directly off the ship onto a covered dock with immediate sight lines to the beach. Cast Members hand out maps and wristbands (serves as your key and charging card). The first thing you see is the sprawling Family Beach to the left, lined with umbrellas and cabanas, and signage directing you to Serenity Beach (right) or Paradise Island (via water shuttle). It feels like stepping into a manicured resort—not a port of call. Within 5 minutes, you can be in the water or under an umbrella.

Beverages and alcohol are not included in most cruise fares; drinks are charged to your onboard account. Food quality is decent but not exceptional—it is resort-style casual. Castaway Cay has minimal shopping. A small gift shop near the dock sells beach towels, sunscreen, t-shirts, and souvenirs ($15–40 per item). No local crafts, no vendor stalls, no haggling—just Disney or cruise-line branded merchandise at standard retail prices. If you forgot sunscreen, buy it here at a 30% markup versus Nassau. Otherwise, skip shopping entirely.
