Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Hire a taxi for a half-day loop: Chios Town old quarter in the morning, then south to Pyrgi and Mesta medieval villages, finishing with a quick stop at a mastic farm or shop. This covers what makes Chios genuinely different from other Greek ports.
Book Pyrgi and Mesta Medieval Villages on Viator
Best Beach
Mavra Volia near Emporio in the south — black volcanic pebble beach, dramatic and unusual. Takes about 45 minutes by taxi each way, so factor in travel time.
With Kids
Take a taxi south to Pyrgi village, let kids explore the geometric-patterned streets, then continue to Mavra Volia beach for a swim. Manageable half-day loop.
Only 3-4 Hours
Walk straight into Chios Town: hit the Byzantine Kampos district lanes, step into the Genoese castle area, and grab a coffee on the main harbor square. That is a solid compact morning without needing transport.
Cheapest Option
Walk Chios Town from the port — castle area, old market lanes, waterfront cafes. Budget roughly 10-15 EUR for food and coffee. Zero transport cost.
What To Avoid
Spending your whole port day in the main harbor area — it is pleasant but does not show you what Chios is actually about. Also avoid overpaying for generic Greek salad restaurants directly on the tourist waterfront; walk one block back for better value.

Quick Take

Port Type
Historic Island Port
Best For
Travelers who want authenticity, medieval architecture, and a Greek island that has not been swallowed by package tourism
Avoid If
You need a polished beach resort experience or want a full lineup of organized excursions — Chios is quieter and more self-directed
Walkability
Chios Town itself is walkable for the port area and old quarter. Southern mastic villages require a taxi or rental car
Budget Fit
Good — local tavernas, free village wandering, and cheap transport keep costs low if you skip organized tours
Good For Short Calls?
Yes, but a full day is better if you want to reach the mastic villages and still see Chios Town

Port Overview

Chios docks at the main port right in Chios Town, the island's capital. Most ships berth at the commercial pier, though smaller vessels may anchor and tender in. The dock is essentially at the edge of town — you can walk to the castle district and main square within 10 to 15 minutes on foot. No shuttle bus is typically needed for the town itself.

What makes Chios worth your time is not the beach clubs or sunset bars — it is the mastic. Chios produces around 70 percent of the world's natural mastic resin, and the medieval villages of the southern Mastichochoria district were built specifically to protect this trade. Pyrgi and Mesta are among the best-preserved fortified villages in the entire Aegean, and they are genuinely lived-in, not museum pieces.

Chios Town has a Genoese castle, a functioning old market quarter, and a relaxed harbor atmosphere that feels like real Greek island life rather than a performance of it. The island does not attract the crowds that Santorini or Mykonos do, which is either its best quality or a drawback depending on what you want. If you like discovering places that feel slightly under the radar for Mediterranean cruising, Chios delivers.

3

Pyrgi and Mesta Medieval Villages

Pyrgi is famous for its extraordinary sgrafito facades — entire building exteriors covered in geometric black-and-white patterns. Mesta is the more intact fortified village with a single entrance gate, inner labyrinth of lanes designed to confuse invaders, and a working central square. Both are living villages, not tourist reconstructions. Together they represent the best-preserved examples of mastic village architecture in Greece.

4

Mastic Museum and Farm Visit

The Mastic Museum in Pyrgi village explains the cultivation, harvesting, and history of this unique resin that has defined Chios for centuries. Several working mastic farms near the villages offer informal or organized visits during harvest season (summer to autumn). You can buy mastic products — liqueur, candy, cosmetics, cooking ingredients — directly at village shops at prices well below airport or tourist mark-up.

5

Chios Town Genoese Castle and Old Quarter

The 14th-century Genoese castle sits above the port town and encloses a neighborhood of old houses, a Byzantine church, and the former Jewish and Genoese quarters. The Giustiniani Palace inside the walls houses a small museum of Byzantine finds. The castle walls are partially walkable and give good views over the harbor and town.

6

Nea Moni Byzantine Monastery

An 11th-century UNESCO World Heritage monastery set in the hills west of Chios Town. It contains some of the finest Byzantine mosaics in the entire Greek world. The monastery was badly damaged in the 1822 Ottoman massacre and the 1881 earthquake; the surviving mosaics are genuinely remarkable. Requires a taxi or rental vehicle to reach.

7

Kampos District

A quiet belt of old citrus estates and Genoese merchant mansions on the outskirts of Chios Town, about 4 km south of the port. Some are in elegant decay, others restored. The stone walls, arched gateways, and shaded lanes make for an atmospheric walk or slow drive. Best explored by bicycle, scooter, or leisurely on foot.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Is It Safe?

Chios is a safe destination with very low crime rates. Standard European travel precautions apply — watch your belongings in the port area and harbor square, particularly when crowds are present. There are no significant scam operations targeting cruise passengers here.

If you are renting a vehicle, roads to the southern villages are well-maintained but narrow in places. Drive carefully on mountain bends. Heat in summer can be intense; carry water if you are walking or exploring villages on foot.

Accessibility & Walkability

Chios Town's harbor area and main commercial street are mostly flat and manageable for mobility-limited visitors. However, the Genoese castle interior involves uneven stone surfaces and steps. The medieval villages of Pyrgi and Mesta have narrow cobblestone lanes that are difficult for wheelchairs or strollers. Beaches in the south are generally pebbly and lack formal accessibility infrastructure. For wheelchair users, the town waterfront and main square area are the most practical options.

Outside the Terminal

Walking out of the port gate puts you directly onto the Chios Town waterfront. There is a row of cafes and small shops facing the water immediately to your right. The harbor square is a short walk along the front. Taxi drivers are usually parked just outside the port area. The atmosphere is calm and local — do not expect a wall of vendors or aggressive tour sellers. Chios does not operate that way, which most visitors find refreshing.

Local Food & Drink

Chios has a solid local food culture that does not revolve around tourists. Look for fresh seafood at tavernas along the waterfront or in the back streets of Chios Town — grilled octopus, local fish, and mezze plates are reliable choices. The island is known for soumada (almond drink), mastic-flavored everything from ice cream to loukoumades, and local cheeses.

For the best value and most authentic experience, walk one or two streets back from the main harbor strip and look for tavernas where the menu is in Greek first. The main harbor front is fine but prices nudge up when they can see cruise ship passengers coming. In the mastic villages, there are small cafes where you can eat well for very little.

Shopping

Mastic products are the clear reason to shop in Chios. The local cooperative brand Mastihashop has a presence in Chios Town and sells everything from cooking-grade resin to skincare and spirits. Village shops in Pyrgi and Mesta sell the same products at comparable or slightly better prices. Buy mastic here — it is cheaper and more authentic than buying it as a packaged souvenir elsewhere in Greece. Local honey, dried herbs, and a local liqueur called kitro are also worth considering.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Book a taxi for the full day if you plan to visit the mastic villages and a beach — agree on a fixed price and schedule before you set off, and confirm the return-to-port time firmly.
  • Mastic products make excellent and genuinely unique gifts; buy them in the villages or at the Mastihashop cooperative rather than the port gift shop for better selection and value.
  • Nea Moni monastery requires modest dress — shoulders and knees covered. There are usually wraps available at the entrance but bring your own to save time.
  • Chios Town is quiet by Greek tourist island standards — do not expect buzzing nightlife or packed beach bars. Lean into the relaxed pace rather than fighting it.
  • If your ship has a late departure, use the extra afternoon hours to visit Kampos for a slow walk through the Genoese estate district — most cruise visitors miss it entirely.
  • The mastic harvest season (roughly July to October) is the most atmospheric time to visit southern villages; you may see trees being tapped or resin collection in progress.
