Chobe National Park, located in northern Botswana along the Chobe River, is home to Africa's largest elephant population. The cruise port consists of a remote dock used exclusively by river cruise operators (Uniworld, Scenic, Tauck, Viking, AmaWaterways, Emerald, Avalon, Riviera Travel, APT); there is no town, commercial terminal, or independent tourism infrastructure.

Ships anchor at designated moorings along the Chobe River. This is not a day-port; cruises typically embark and disembark here as part of multi-day Botswana river itineraries. Most passengers spend 2–5 nights aboard, with daily guided activities (river cruises, game drives, walks) organized by the cruise line.

If your cruise stops briefly at Chobe, expect to remain onboard or participate in organized excursions. Independent exploration is unsafe and impractical due to the remote location, presence of dangerous wildlife, and lack of transport or facilities outside the ship.

Is It Safe?

Chobe National Park is remote and populated by large, dangerous wildlife—elephants, hippos, crocodiles, lions, and Cape buffalo. Never leave your ship or designated excursion group unaccompanied. Do not approach animals; maintain distances set by your guide (typically 25+ meters for large game).

The region is generally safe for organized tourists but carries inherent wildlife risks. Guides are trained and armed; follow all instructions without exception. Petty theft is rare but possible; leave valuables in your cabin.

Medical facilities are extremely limited. Serious illness or injury requires helicopter evacuation to Kasane or beyond. Ensure travel insurance covers evacuation.

Chobe port has no paved walkways, elevators, or accessibility infrastructure. Boarding and disembarking involve ramps or stairs onto small boats. The terrain is uneven, dusty, and exposed to sun. Outside the Terminal

The port dock is a simple wooden or concrete pier with basic shelter. You will see the river, trees, and African landscape. There are no shops, cafes, or amenities outside the ship. A few crew members or guides may be present. The atmosphere is quiet and remote. Your ship is your base; there is nowhere to walk to or explore independently.

Local Food & Drink

All meals and most drinks are served onboard your ship, which is the only reliable food source. River cruises typically feature multi-course dinners, buffet breakfasts, and light lunches. Cuisine varies by operator but is generally international with some local Botswana dishes.

If your itinerary includes a Kasane town visit, local restaurants serve basic African and southern African fare (pap, grilled meats, sadza). Quality and hygiene are acceptable but simple. Do not eat from street vendors or informal sources.

Bring high-SPF sunscreen and extra water for excursions. Dehydration is a real risk during long game drives in the heat.

Shopping

There are no shops at Chobe port. If a Kasane visit is included, small curio shops sell crafts, beads, and wildlife-themed souvenirs (woodcarvings, textiles). Prices are moderate and negotiable. Quality is variable; inspect items before buying. Your ship may have a small gift shop; prices are higher but guaranteed quality.
