Costa Maya is a purpose-built cruise port on Mexico's southern Caribbean coast, about 240 km south of Cancun and close to the Belize border. The pier opened specifically to serve cruise ships and is essentially its own island — a commercial terminal with shops, restaurants, a pool, and swim-up bars built to contain spending. That context matters when planning your day.
The good news: the real attractions are genuinely close. Mahahual, a small Mexican beach town, is a five-minute taxi ride away. The Mesoamerican Reef — the world's second largest — sits right offshore and is easily accessible by boat. Chacchoben, a mid-sized Mayan archaeological site set in jungle, is about 45 minutes inland and one of the better ruins visits on the western Caribbean circuit.
Costa Maya is honest in what it is: a beach and reef port with one strong inland option. If you want that, you'll have a good day. If you expect a vibrant, authentic Mexican city experience, you won't find it here — the nearest real town is Mahahual, which is charming but small. Most cruisers find a half to full day here easy to fill without overthinking it.
Costa Maya is a low-risk port for cruise passengers. The terminal is well-managed and Mahahual town is small and tourist-friendly. Petty theft is not a significant reported issue compared to larger Caribbean ports, but standard awareness applies — don't flash expensive gear on the beach and leave unnecessary valuables aboard.
The main safety concern is practical rather than criminal: know your all-aboard time and build in buffer, especially if you're going to Chacchoben. The ruins are far enough that traffic or a delayed taxi could cut it close. Independent travelers heading to the ruins should leave no later than two hours before all-aboard to stay comfortable.
The pier terminal itself is flat and wheelchair-accessible with paved walkways. The resort pool area and immediate beach access within the terminal are manageable for guests with limited mobility. Mahahual's beach promenade (the malecon) is mostly flat and accessible by taxi.
Chacchoben ruins involve uneven jungle terrain, some climbing on stone structures, and unpaved paths — not suitable for wheelchairs and challenging for guests with significant mobility issues. Snorkeling by boat is manageable depending on operator; confirm accessibility with the provider before booking.
The first thing you see leaving the ship is the terminal's commercial strip — duty-free shops, chain-style souvenir stalls, a swim-up bar, and a pool area. It's clean, well-organized, and designed entirely for cruise passengers. Taxis and tour operators are immediately visible at the terminal exit.
If you're heading to Mahahual, just walk past the shopping area to the taxi rank. Drivers are accustomed to the routine and the process is quick. The terminal doesn't feel chaotic like some large Caribbean ports — it's more of a controlled commercial zone than a bustling street scene.
The main public beach along the Mahahual malecon. Calm, shallow turquoise water, easy to access, and backed by local palapa restaurants and beach bars. The sand isn't powder-fine but the vibe is relaxed and genuinely Mexican. Best free beach option from the port.
A quieter beach north of Mahahual with calmer water and fewer people. Some small palapa operations offer loungers and drinks. More secluded feel than the town beach without being remote.
The beach area within the cruise terminal grounds. Maintained, convenient, and immediately accessible from the ship. Water is calm but the setting is commercial — surrounded by shops and bars built for cruise passengers.
Eating inside the cruise terminal will cost you more and deliver less. The better move is to head to Mahahual, where the malecon is lined with palapa-style restaurants serving fresh fish tacos, ceviche, grilled seafood, and cold Mexican beer at reasonable prices. Expect to spend $8-20 USD per person for a proper meal.
Look for the smaller spots slightly off the main tourist drag in Mahahual for better value. Fish tacos and ceviche are consistently good across most places. Avoid the international-style menus pushed at the front of tourist restaurants — the local Mexican options are better and cheaper. Vegetarian options are limited but available at most spots.
The terminal complex has the usual cruise port retail: jewelry, tequila, souvenirs, and duty-free. Prices are elevated and negotiation is limited. If you want to buy local crafts or gifts, the small shops along Mahahual's malecon offer better variety and more room to haggle — hammocks, textiles, silver jewelry, and hot sauces are all worth browsing.
Don't waste much port day time shopping here unless it's a specific priority. Costa Maya isn't known for exceptional retail, and the best items are the same as you'd find across Mexican Caribbean ports.
Taxis queue at the pier exit and are the main way to reach Mahahual town or nearby beaches. Fares are semi-fixed and drivers quote in USD.

Technically possible at around 5 km, but the road has no footpath and the heat makes it uncomfortable. A taxi takes 5-10 minutes and costs $5-8 USD each way — just take the taxi.
Yes, Costa Maya and Mahahual are considered low-risk for tourists. Standard precautions apply — don't leave valuables unattended on the beach and keep an eye on your belongings in town.
Yes, if you have a full-day port call and an interest in Mayan archaeology. The jungle setting is atmospheric and crowds are lighter than Tulum. Budget at least 4 hours door-to-door from the ship.
You can arrange snorkeling locally in Mahahual without pre-booking, especially outside peak season. Pre-booking via Viator or your cruise line gives more certainty on busy days when multiple ships are in port.
The port can handle multiple ships simultaneously, and on busy days two or three vessels may dock at once. When that happens, Mahahual and the terminal both get noticeably crowded — arriving early in the day helps.
