Ships anchor offshore; passengers transferred via tender boats to the small coastal town.
Currimao is a small anchorage port on the west coast of Luzon in Ilocos Norte province. Ships do not dock at a terminal; instead, they anchor offshore and tender passengers ashore to a basic beach landing. The area is quiet, rural, and underdeveloped compared to major Philippine ports like Manila or Cebu. Most cruisers either enjoy a low-key beach half-day or arrange transport to nearby Laoag city (20–30 km south) for culture and food. Do not expect shopping, multiple restaurants, or structured port infrastructure. This is a scenic pause, not a destination in itself.
Currimao and the immediate beach area are safe for tourists. Petty theft is uncommon, and locals are welcoming. Avoid flashing valuables or large amounts of cash. The beach landing itself can be rough if swells are high; heed crew warnings about tender operations. Once ashore, stay in populated areas and travel with a companion if possible. Do not wander into unmarked back roads or isolated areas after dark. Tap water is not reliably safe; drink bottled water. The anchorage area is quiet and isolated, so plan transport in advance rather than relying on luck.
Tender boats have steps and can be challenging for those with mobility issues; the beach landing is uneven sand and rocks. Once ashore, there are no paved sidewalks, and the road to nearby sites is unpaved and uneven. Laoag city has some paved streets but limited wheelchair infrastructure. If mobility is a concern, arrange a private vehicle through the ship in advance. Currimao itself is not accessible-friendly.
There is no cruise terminal building. Passengers tender ashore onto a small beach landing with basic wooden structures or shelters. The immediate area is quiet, with a few small homes and coconut palms visible. A handful of locals or unofficial guides may approach; be polite but wary of unsolicited offers. The sand is soft, the water is calm, and views of the ship are clear. Beyond the beach, the landscape is rural—no shops, cafes, or restaurants within immediate walking distance. This is a beach landing, not a port town.
White sand, calm turquoise water, scenic light house nearby. Basic facilities (few shaded areas, limited food vendors). Popular with locals and cruise passengers.
Quieter stretches of beach south of Poro Point, accessible by short tricycle ride or walk. White sand, fewer tourists, basic amenities.
Food options at the port landing itself are minimal; a few informal stalls may sell snacks, soft drinks, or fried items (₱30–80 per item). For a proper meal, hire a tricycle to Laoag city. Local specialties include bagnet (crispy fried pork), dinengdeng (vegetable stew), and fresh seafood. Laoag has small restaurants and street-food vendors near the cathedral and market; meals range from ₱150–500 ($2.70–9 USD) for casual eats. Bring cash in small denominations; cards are unreliable outside the city. Tap water is not safe; stick to bottled water and canned beverages. If you have only a few hours, eat lunch on the ship before tendering ashore or pack sandwiches.
Currimao has no shops at the port landing. Laoag city has a small market and souvenir shops selling local woven textiles (abel Iloco), dried fruits, and crafts, but selection is limited and not exceptional. Prices are low. Do not expect duty-free goods or high-end retail. If shopping is important, you will be disappointed at this port. Save shopping energy for larger ports like Manila or Cebu.

Planning a cruise here?
Oceania Cruises sail to Currimao.
Not really. Poro Point Light House is nearby, and the beach itself is pleasant, but shops, restaurants, and attractions require transport. Plan accordingly.
If you enjoy quiet beaches and do not need much infrastructure, it is pleasant for 3–4 hours. If you want culture, food, and shopping, take a tricycle to Laoag (recommended). If you have been to other beach ports, you may skip it.
Almost certainly not. Bring Philippine Pesos in cash from the ship or an ATM in Laoag. Informal beach vendors and tricycle drivers do not accept cards.
