Da Nang has both a modern container terminal and anchorage options; most cruise ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to shore.

Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Hire a private car or book a guided day trip to Hoi An Ancient Town — about 30 km south. It's one of the most photogenic and walkable historic towns in Southeast Asia and is genuinely worth the trip.
Best Beach
My Khe Beach is the closest and most practical — wide, clean, and lined with cheap food and drink options. Non Nuoc Beach is quieter if you prefer fewer crowds.
With Kids
My Khe Beach for swimming plus the nearby Dragon Bridge (free to walk across) makes an easy, low-stress family half-day. The Ba Na Hills cable car resort is a full-day option kids love but requires early planning.
Only 3-4 Hours
Grab a taxi straight to My Khe Beach (15 min, around $5-8 USD), swim and eat fresh seafood at a beachfront shack, then taxi back. Simple, cheap, and satisfying.
Cheapest Option
Take a local taxi or grab app to Da Nang's Han Market, walk the riverfront promenade, and eat banh mi or pho at street stalls. Budget roughly $10-15 USD all-in for transport and food.
What To Avoid
Ba Na Hills sounds great on paper but requires most of your day and is frequently clouded over, making the famous Golden Bridge hard to see clearly. Avoid terminal gift shops — prices are inflated compared to the city.

Quick Take

Port Type
Beach & City Hybrid
Best For
Cruisers who want Hoi An's ancient town, My Khe Beach, or both in one day
Avoid If
You dislike heat, humidity, haggling, or navigating without a guide in unfamiliar cities
Walkability
Low from the port itself; the city center and beaches require transport but are easy to reach cheaply
Budget Fit
Excellent — Vietnam is one of Southeast Asia's most affordable destinations for independent cruisers
Good For Short Calls?
Yes, especially for My Khe Beach or a quick city loop; Hoi An needs a full day

Port Overview

Da Nang is a modern Vietnamese city of around 1.2 million people on a stretch of central coast backed by the Marble Mountains. Cruise ships typically anchor offshore and tender passengers in, or dock at the Tien Sa Port in the Son Tra peninsula — about 10 km from the city center. Neither option puts you within walking distance of anything interesting, so transport is a must from the first minute ashore.

The city itself is cleaner, newer, and more navigable than Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, making it one of the more approachable Vietnamese ports for first-time visitors. But the real draw is what surrounds it: My Khe Beach is minutes away, the UNESCO-listed ancient trading town of Hoi An is 30 km south, and the Marble Mountains are a short detour for temple-and-cave explorers.

For most cruisers, Da Nang is a launching pad rather than a destination in itself. The port day is well spent if you commit to one clear objective — beach, Hoi An, or city — rather than trying to do all three. Hoi An is the standout experience if you have a full day and reliable transport arranged in advance.

Da Nang City Riverfront & Han Market

Ba Na Hills & Golden Bridge

A French-colonial hilltop resort reached by cable car, famous for the giant-hand Golden Bridge that went viral globally. Best for those who specifically want the Golden Bridge photo opportunity.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Is It Safe?

Da Nang is one of Vietnam's safer cities for tourists. Violent crime toward visitors is rare. The main annoyances are motorbike bag-snatching in crowded areas and taxi overcharging — both avoidable with basic awareness. Use Grab for transport, keep bags worn across your body in busy markets, and don't leave valuables visible on beach chairs.

Traffic is the most realistic hazard. Vietnamese road behavior is chaotic by Western standards — cross streets slowly and consistently, making eye contact with oncoming motorbike riders. Tien Sa Port is well-organized and not aggressive, but once in the city or at Han Market, expect persistent vendor attention. A polite but firm 'no thank you' is enough in most cases.

Accessibility & Walkability

Da Nang's port area and city streets have uneven pavement, motorbike-clogged footpaths, and few formal wheelchair accommodations. My Khe Beach has easier flat access once you reach the sand, but getting there in a wheelchair requires a private vehicle. Hoi An's Ancient Town is a cobblestone-heavy environment that is challenging for mobility-limited visitors. Cruisers with mobility limitations will have the most comfortable day staying close to the beach rather than attempting market or temple circuits. The tender process, where applicable, adds another physical obstacle — check with your cruise line about tender accessibility before the port day.

Outside the Terminal

Tien Sa Port has a small commercial strip right at exit with souvenir stalls, money changers, and a few tour touts. It's not overwhelming, but vendors are persistent. Grab app taxis can meet you just outside the terminal gate. If you haven't pre-arranged transport, walk past the first cluster of unofficial taxis near the exit and look for metered Mai Linh or Vinasun cabs, or simply open Grab and wait the few minutes for your driver to arrive. The 10-minute ride into the Son Tra area passes coastal scenery and gives you a quick read on how the day will go traffic-wise.

Beaches Near the Port

My Khe Beach

Da Nang's main beach — wide, long, and well-serviced. Reliable swimming, beachfront seafood, and easy taxi access make it the default choice for beach days. Can get busy on weekends but remains pleasant on cruise port days.

Distance
8-10 km, ~15 min by taxi
Cost
Free; sun loungers check locally for current rates
Best for
Most cruisers wanting a straightforward beach half-day

Non Nuoc Beach

A quieter stretch of sand just south of My Khe, near the Marble Mountains. Fewer vendors and a calmer atmosphere. Good option if My Khe feels too busy or you're combining with a Marble Mountains visit.

Distance
15 km south, ~25 min by taxi
Cost
Free; some resort areas charge for facilities
Best for
Cruisers wanting quieter sand or combining beach with Marble Mountains

Local Food & Drink

Vietnamese food is the main culinary reason to go ashore in Da Nang. Local specialties worth tracking down include mi quang (turmeric noodles with pork, shrimp, and herbs), banh xeo (sizzling rice-flour pancakes), and fresh seafood by weight at My Khe beachfront restaurants. Prices are very low by Western standards — a full meal at a local restaurant typically runs $3-7 USD per person.

Hoi An adds its own food scene: white rose dumplings, cao lau noodles, and banh mi from Phuong bakery (often cited as one of Vietnam's best) are all accessible within the Ancient Town. Avoid eating at the first places directly on the main tourist street in Hoi An — walk a block back and prices drop noticeably with similar quality.

In Da Nang city itself, Con Market and the area around Bach Dang riverside street have solid local eating options. Skip the Western-oriented restaurants near the port — they charge more and deliver less.

Shopping

Da Nang itself is not a standout shopping port, but Han Market is worth a browse for local souvenirs, Vietnamese coffee, lacquerware, and textiles at fair prices. Hoi An is where most cruisers end up spending money — custom-tailored clothing is the headline draw, with dozens of tailor shops offering 24-hour turnaround. Quality varies; if you're ordering tailored items, go early in the day and allow time for a fitting. Marble Mountains has a legitimate marble-carving industry and you can buy direct from craftsmen at better prices than souvenir shops, though heavy items are impractical to carry.

Money & Currency

Currency
Vietnamese Dong (VND)
USD Accepted?
No
Card Payments
Cards accepted at larger hotels, restaurants, and tourist shops in Hoi An and Da Nang city. Cash strongly preferred at markets, street food stalls, and small vendors.
ATMs
ATMs available at the port area, Da Nang city center, and throughout Hoi An. Vietcombank and Agribank ATMs are reliable.
Tipping
Not mandatory but appreciated. VND 20,000-50,000 (roughly $1-2 USD) for drivers and restaurant staff is standard for tourists.
Notes
Exchange USD to VND at the port money changers or city banks. Avoid exchanging in hotels. The Dong has many zeros — double-check amounts before paying.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
February to May — dry season with lower humidity, sunny skies, and comfortable temperatures around 25-30°C (77-86°F)
Avoid
October and November — peak typhoon and heavy rain season; flooding can affect Hoi An specifically
Temperature
25-35°C (77-95°F) with high humidity; mornings are more comfortable than afternoons
Notes
Da Nang sits in a transition zone — the wet and dry seasons are less predictable than in northern or southern Vietnam. Check the forecast within a week of arrival rather than relying on general seasonal guides.

Airport Information

Airport
Da Nang International Airport (DAD)
Distance
Approx 8 km from Tien Sa Port
Getting there
Taxi or Grab app, roughly 20-25 min. No direct bus from port to airport.
Notes
Well-connected to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and several international routes. Useful for cruises with Da Nang as embarkation or disembarkation. Allow extra time for check-in — the airport can be congested during peak domestic travel times.

Getting Around from the Port

Private taxi or ride-hailing app (Grab)

Grab (Southeast Asia's Uber equivalent) is the most reliable and fairly priced option. Set the destination in the app and avoid haggling entirely.

Cost: $5-12 USD Time: 10-30 min depending on destination
Book a transfer 5% off with code TPO5 at checkout
Private car hire (half or full day)

Best option for Hoi An. A private car with driver for the day gives you flexibility and avoids shared tour timing. Book through your ship or a reputable local operator in advance.

Cost: $40-70 USD per vehicle Time: 45-60 min each way to Hoi An
Book a transfer 5% off with code TPO5 at checkout
Metered taxi

Available outside the terminal but less transparent than Grab. Use only Mai Linh or Vinasun branded taxis to avoid overcharging.

Cost: $5-15 USD Time: Varies
Book a transfer 5% off with code TPO5 at checkout
Ship-organized excursion

Convenient for Hoi An, Marble Mountains, or Ba Na Hills. Most cruise lines offer these, though at a significant price premium over independent options.

Time: Full day for most routes

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Download the Grab app before arriving — it eliminates taxi negotiation entirely and is consistently cheaper than flagging street cabs.
  • If Hoi An is your goal, arrange private transport in advance; waiting for taxis at the port for a longer trip wastes valuable shore time.
  • Carry small denomination VND notes for street food, market purchases, and sun lounger fees — vendors rarely have change for large bills.
  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and apply sunscreen before leaving the ship; the combination of heat, humidity, and direct sun is intense from mid-morning onward.
  • If you tender ashore, confirm the last tender time with your ship before committing to a Hoi An trip — 30 km each way with traffic means tight margins for late-afternoon calls.
  • Haggling is expected at markets but keep it good-humored; opening offers at tourist stalls are often 2-3x the real price, so counter at roughly half and meet somewhere reasonable.
