Durban is South Africa's main cruise hub, with ships docking at the Durban Container Terminal (Pier 2 or nearby). The port itself is industrial and sits 2–3 km from the city center and beachfront. Most cruisers head directly to the uShaka Beach and Marine Parade esplanade for swimming and restaurants, or book organized wildlife safaris (mainly Hluhluwe-Imfolozi National Park, 2–2.5 hours inland). The city has a rough reputation, but the beachfront and organized tours are generally safe and worth the transport effort. Half-day port stops are realistic; full-day visits allow for either a relaxed beach day or a safari excursion with travel time.
