Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Combine both sections of the Zuiderzee Museum for a half-day, then explore the harbour district and eat at a canal-side café. This gives you the best of what Enkhuizen actually offers.
Best Beach
Not relevant — Enkhuizen sits on the IJsselmeer, an inland lake. There are no swim beaches worth targeting on a port day.
With Kids
The Zuiderzee Museum Buitenmuseum (open-air section) is genuinely good for families — it is an entire reconstructed fishing village with costumed demonstrators and hands-on activities.
Only 3-4 Hours
Walk from the pier into the old town in 10 minutes, head straight to the Zuiderzee Museum Binnenmuseum (indoor section), then stroll the Dijk waterfront and grab lunch at a local café. That is a complete and satisfying short visit.
Cheapest Option
Walk the old town, visit the harbour and defensive towers (free), and eat a herring sandwich at the market for around 3-5 EUR. Total spend can stay under 10 EUR.
What To Avoid
Do not spend the day trying to reach Amsterdam — it is over an hour by train each way and eats your port time. Also skip the generic souvenir shops near the pier; they are not representative of the town.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Port Overview

Enkhuizen sits on the western shore of the IJsselmeer in North Holland, about 55 km northeast of Amsterdam. Ships dock at a pier close to the old town centre — you are walking into the historic district within 10 minutes of stepping ashore. This is a small, well-preserved Dutch harbour town with around 18,000 residents and a character that feels genuinely local rather than tourist-polished.

The town reached its peak in the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age as one of the most important herring fishing ports in Europe. That heritage is the reason to come ashore. The Zuiderzee Museum — split between a large indoor collection and a full open-air reconstructed village — is one of the better regional museums in the Netherlands and the clear centrepiece of any port day here.

Enkhuizen is honest value for cruisers. It is not spectacular, but it is calm, photogenic, affordable, and completely walkable. If your ship offers it as an alternative to a busier Dutch port, it is worth taking seriously. A half day is enough; a full day works if you pace yourself through the museum and linger over lunch.

Is It Safe?

Enkhuizen is a very safe, quiet Dutch town. Street crime is minimal and the port area is calm. Standard awareness applies — keep an eye on belongings in crowded tourist spots — but there is nothing specific to warn about here. The pier area and town centre are well-lit and monitored during ship visits.

Accessibility & Walkability

The town is flat and manageable for most mobility levels. Cobblestone streets exist in parts of the old town and can be uneven — not ideal for wheelchairs without assistance. The Zuiderzee Museum Binnenmuseum (indoor section) has good accessibility. The Buitenmuseum (open-air village) involves more uneven ground and may be harder in a wheelchair. The pier itself is a standard passenger pier with reasonable access.

Outside the Terminal

Leaving the pier, you immediately face the IJsselmeer waterfront with views of traditional sailing vessels and the historic Dromedaris defensive tower. It feels authentically Dutch within seconds of stepping off the ship. There are no aggressive taxi touts or souvenir stalls crowding the gate — the tone is quiet and low-key. A short walk along the waterfront puts you into the old town without any navigation challenge.

Local Food & Drink

Enkhuizen has a modest but solid local dining scene concentrated around the town centre and harbour. Herring is the obvious local choice — fresh raw herring (haring) with onions is available at market stalls and is the correct thing to eat here for around 3-5 EUR. For a sit-down meal, canal-side cafés along the Dijk serve Dutch standards like erwtensoep (pea soup) and stamppot in season, plus sandwiches and coffee year-round. Prices are reasonable by Dutch standards — expect 10-18 EUR for a lunch main at a decent café. Avoid eating at the most tourist-facing spots directly at the pier; walk two streets into town for better quality and fairer prices.

Shopping

Shopping is limited and that is not necessarily a problem. The town has a few small independent shops selling Delft-style ceramics, local cheese, and regional food products. These are more interesting than the generic souvenir stalls near the dock. There is no significant retail district, no luxury shopping, and no large stores. If you want Dutch cheese or regional produce to take back to the ship, look for dedicated cheese shops in the town centre rather than the pier-adjacent stalls.

Money & Currency

Currency
Euro (EUR)
USD Accepted?
No
Card Payments
Card payment is widely accepted in shops, restaurants, and the museum. Some smaller market stalls and street vendors may be cash only.
ATMs
ATMs available in the town centre. Not abundant — withdraw cash before arriving if you prefer it.
Tipping
Not mandatory in the Netherlands. Rounding up or leaving 5-10% is appreciated at sit-down restaurants but never expected.
Notes
Enkhuizen is an affordable port by Northern European standards. A comfortable day ashore including museum entry and lunch should cost 35-60 EUR per person.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
May to August for warmest and longest days
Avoid
November to February — cold, wet, short days, and limited tourist infrastructure
Temperature
12-22°C (54-72°F) during main cruise season (May-September)
Notes
Northern Netherlands weather is variable year-round. Bring a light waterproof layer regardless of the forecast. Wind off the IJsselmeer can make 18°C feel cooler than expected.

Airport Information

Airport
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS)
Distance
Approximately 70 km
Getting there
Train from Enkhuizen station to Amsterdam Centraal, then Schiphol Rail Link. Total journey 1.5-2 hours. Taxi or private transfer also possible but expensive.
Notes
Enkhuizen is not a common embarkation port. Most river cruise itineraries using Enkhuizen begin or end in Amsterdam. Pre- or post-cruise stays are better based in Amsterdam.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Buy a combined ticket for both Zuiderzee Museum sections — the open-air Buitenmuseum is the stronger half and the combination gives much better value.
  • Check which day of the week your ship calls — the local market runs on specific days and adds atmosphere to the town centre if you catch it.
  • The museum ferry between the indoor and open-air sections is a quick and pleasant IJsselmeer crossing; do not skip it in favour of walking.
  • Arrive at the Buitenmuseum early in your visit — it takes 2-3 hours to do properly and you do not want to rush it at the end of the day.
  • Bring a light jacket even in summer — the waterfront gets a consistent breeze off the IJsselmeer and it catches many visitors off guard.
  • If your cruise gives you less than 4 hours ashore, skip the open-air museum and focus on the indoor section plus the harbour walk — that is still a satisfying visit.
