Floreana is a small, arid Galápagos island where all ships anchor offshore and tender passengers ashore. The landing is Black Beach, a volcanic-sand strip with no permanent infrastructure—only a ranger station, toilet facilities, and shade. Expect sparse development: no shops, no restaurants, no independent taxis. All activity is guided and naturalist-focused. The port is worth a tender day only if you are on a naturalist cruise (Lindblad, Celebrity Expeditions, Hurtigruten, Ponant, Silversea, Regent, Quark) and the itinerary includes wildlife walks, snorkeling, or beach naturalist time. Short-call cruisers (8–12 hours) should plan one main activity and expect to spend 4–5 hours ashore including tender queues.
Floreana is a National Park and very safe. Petty theft is not a concern. The main risk is sun exposure (equatorial, intense UV) and dehydration—bring sunscreen, a hat, and 2+ liters of water. Trail terrain is uneven volcanic rock; wear sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes. Never leave marked trails or touch wildlife. Violations carry fines ($1,000+ USD) and possible deportation from the Galápagos. Marine life is wild: if a sea lion or marine iguana approaches, back away and let the naturalist intervene.
Floreana is not accessible for wheelchairs or people with mobility issues. Black Beach landing requires stepping from the tender into shallow water (calf- to waist-deep depending on tide) and walking on uneven volcanic sand and rock. Trails are steep, rocky, and 1–3 km long. If you have difficulty walking, inform your cruise line before booking; some ships may offer modified shore activities or a tender-side naturalist briefing.
There is no terminal building. You step off the tender onto Black Beach—a thin strip of dark volcanic sand backed by low scrub and a few Galápagos National Park signs. A ranger station with toilets and a small shaded area is 50 meters inland. No shops, no food stands, no facilities beyond water and shade. Naturalists meet groups at the beach; stay with your group and follow the guide. The atmosphere is wild and minimal—very different from a typical cruise port.
Volcanic-sand beach, landing point for all tenders. Sparse shade, strong sun. Not for swimming; primarily a landing and wildlife-viewing spot. Sea lions haul out; marine iguanas visible. Arid volcanic backdrop.
Rocky islet with sheltered lagoon. Clear water, excellent snorkeling. Not a beach; access by tender and snorkel only. Sea turtles, rays, and endemic fish common.
There are no restaurants, food vendors, or shops on Floreana. All meals are aboard ship. If your tender time extends into lunch, eat before disembarking or immediately after returning. Bring snacks (energy bars, fruit, nuts) and plenty of water—dehydration is common in the equatorial sun and arid terrain. Some naturalists carry water, but do not rely on it.
There are no shops on Floreana Island. Do not expect to buy anything ashore. If you want Galápagos souvenirs (books, DVDs, crafts), buy them aboard ship or at a larger port (e.g., Santa Cruz, Isabela). Prices aboard are typically higher than mainline Ecuador but more convenient.
All passengers board tenders from the ship. Return times are strictly enforced. Expect queues (10–20 min) at peak boarding.
Book ferry ticketsLicensed Galápagos naturalists lead all shore activities. You cannot walk independently off designated trails.
Some itineraries include guided snorkel from Black Beach or boat-based snorkel to Devil's Crown. Operator-led only.

No. All areas are protected National Park; guides are mandatory, trails are marked, and off-trail walking is prohibited and fined. You must stay with your naturalist group at all times.
Possibly, but tight. Flamingo Lagoon takes 2–3 hours; snorkel takes 1–1.5 hours. With tender time, you have ~4–5 hours ashore. Ask your ship's naturalist whether a combo itinerary is possible for your sailing.
You stay ashore overnight (best case: ship sends rescue tender next morning; worst case: you are left behind). There is no accommodation, food, or transport on Floreana. Always confirm tender times and board early.
