Booking independently
- Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
- Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
- Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.
When the ship’s excursion makes sense
- Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
- Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
- The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Port Overview
Gijón is a real working city of around 270,000 people on the Cantabrian coast of Asturias, northern Spain. Ships dock at the El Musel commercial port, which sits about 4-5 km west of the city centre — meaning you will need a taxi or shuttle to reach anything interesting. The port area itself has no amenities worth lingering over.
Once in the city, Gijón rewards walkers. The Cimadevilla neighbourhood is a compact medieval headland jutting into the sea, filled with old streets, a Roman bathhouse ruin, and the Chillida sculpture at the top with panoramic Atlantic views. The long sandy arc of Playa de San Lorenzo stretches directly from the old town, and the harbour area has a strong cider-bar and pintxos culture that is genuinely local and cheap.
This is not a polished tourist-trap port. It gets relatively few cruise calls, so facilities and English signage near the dock are limited. That said, for cruisers wanting an authentic, uncrowded Spanish city experience rather than another resort, Gijón punches well above its cruise reputation.

Is It Safe?
Gijón is a safe, ordinary Spanish city. Normal urban awareness applies — keep an eye on bags in busy markets or the beach — but there are no particular hotspots to avoid for cruise visitors spending a day in the old town or waterfront area. The area around El Musel port is industrial and not a place to wander; move directly into the city.
Accessibility & Walkability
Playa de San Lorenzo's promenade is long, flat, and wheelchair-friendly. The Cimadevilla headland involves some steep and cobbled streets that can be difficult for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility — the lower waterfront area around the Puerto Deportivo is more accessible. The port pier itself is flat but the transfer to the city is by road, so passengers with mobility needs should confirm shuttle availability with the cruise line.
Outside the Terminal
El Musel is a working freight and cruise terminal with limited atmosphere outside the gangway. Expect a functional pier environment with little around it except port infrastructure. A taxi rank or shuttle staging area should be visible near the terminal building on days ships call. Head straight into the city — there is no reason to linger at the port.

Beaches Near the Port
Playa de San Lorenzo
Long urban beach with fine sand directly adjacent to the city centre. Atlantic waves make it more for walking and sunbathing than calm swimming. Busy in summer, atmospheric year-round.
Playa de Poniente
A smaller, quieter beach on the western side of the city, less crowded than San Lorenzo and with a more local feel.
Local Food & Drink
Gijón is a serious food city by Spanish regional standards. Asturian cuisine runs to fabada (bean and pork stew), grilled seafood, aged local cheeses, and above all, the region's beloved cider. A sidrería lunch — where bottles of natural cider are poured from shoulder height into wide glasses — is both cheap and genuinely fun. Expect to pay $10-18 USD per person for a full sit-down lunch with drinks.
The Puerto Deportivo waterfront and the streets around Cimadevilla have the best concentration of restaurants and bars. Avoid anything with a translated English menu near the port taxi area — walk another five minutes into the old town for better value and quality. Pintxos bars offer the cheapest option: snack as you walk for $1-3 USD per bite.
Shopping
Gijón is not a major shopping destination for cruise visitors. The city centre has standard Spanish high street chains and a few local food shops selling Asturian products — cheese, cider, and cured meats make decent practical souvenirs. The old town has some independent boutiques but nothing remarkable. If shopping is your priority, this is not your ideal port.

- El Musel port itself has no ATMs — get cash in the city if needed.
Weather & Best Time
- Best months
- June, July, August
- Avoid
- November through March for cruise visits — wet, grey, and cold
- Temperature
- 16-23°C (61-73°F) in summer; cooler in spring and autumn
- Notes
- Asturias is notoriously green because it rains a lot. Even summer days can be overcast or briefly wet. Pack a light layer.
Airport Information
- Airport
- Asturias Airport (OVD)
- Distance
- Approximately 40 km west of Gijón
- Getting there
- Taxi (around $40-55 USD), ALSA bus service to Gijón city, or pre-booked transfer

City buses connect El Musel area to the centre but routes and stops require local knowledge. Not intuitive for a short port day.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers
- Taxis from El Musel to the city are reliable on port days but scarce for the return in the late afternoon — note a local taxi number or use the ship shuttle for your return journey.
- Asturian cider must be ordered by the bottle and poured the traditional way — ask bar staff to demonstrate rather than pouring it yourself the first time.
- Oviedo, the elegant regional capital, is only 30 km away by taxi or bus and is an option for cruisers who have already seen Gijón, but the round trip adds time and cost — only realistic with 6+ hours ashore.
- Carry euros in cash for smaller bars and market purchases — card readers are common in restaurants but not universal in traditional sidrerías.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. El Musel port is about 4-5 km from the city centre along an industrial road. You need a taxi, ship shuttle, or local bus to reach Cimadevilla or the beach.
Three to four hours is enough to cover Cimadevilla, grab a cider lunch, and walk the beach promenade. A full day is comfortable but not necessary unless you plan a side trip to Oviedo.
Yes, for travellers who want an authentic, uncrowded Spanish city rather than a resort. It is not spectacular, but it is real — good food, genuine local culture, and no cruise-ship circus.
