Giverny is not a cruise port in any conventional sense — there is no terminal, no pier infrastructure, and no town built around ship arrivals. River cruise lines operating on the Seine stop offshore near Vernon and tender or shuttle passengers the short distance to Giverny village, a quiet settlement of roughly 500 residents whose only real claim to international fame is that Claude Monet lived and painted here for over 40 years.
The entire reason to come ashore is the Fondation Claude Monet: the house, the flower garden, and the famous Water Lily pond with its Japanese bridge. If that does not interest you, the port offers very little else. Vernon, the nearest town, is a short taxi ride away and has a market, a modest medieval church, and a few cafes, but it is firmly a secondary option.
Factor in tender time both ways — typically 10-20 minutes each direction depending on where the ship anchors — and a port call that looks generous on paper can shrink quickly. Prioritise the gardens, arrive early, and plan your return with buffer time. This is not a port to linger over logistics.
Giverny is extremely safe. It is a quiet rural village with minimal traffic and no notable crime concerns for tourists. The main practical risk is time — missing the last tender back to the ship. Confirm the final tender departure time before you go ashore and set a phone alarm 30 minutes before it.
The village lanes are generally flat but mostly paved with uneven stone or gravel. Inside the Fondation Claude Monet, the flower garden has gravel paths that can be difficult for wheelchairs or mobility aids, and the Japanese bridge area involves gentle slopes. The house itself has limited wheelchair access. Passengers with significant mobility limitations should check directly with the Fondation before visiting and discuss tender boarding assistance with their cruise line.
There is no terminal. You step off the tender onto a riverbank or a small landing area, often into a queue of fellow passengers. From there it is a short walk into the village. There are no taxis or buses waiting at the landing itself — everything in Giverny is on foot from this point. The transition from ship to village takes about 15 minutes door to door on a smooth day.
Giverny has a small but decent dining strip along Rue Claude Monet. The Ancien Hôtel Baudy is the most storied option — it was a gathering point for Impressionist painters in Monet's era and still serves straightforward French food in a garden setting. Expect set menus rather than à la carte flexibility. A few crêperies and snack stands near the garden entrance are quicker and cheaper. Do not expect a wide range of options — this is a tiny village and restaurants fill up fast during peak sailings. If your ship has multiple itinerary days nearby, eat on board and use your port time for the gardens.
Shopping in Giverny is limited to a few small art boutiques, garden-themed gift shops near the Fondation, and the Fondation's own shop (prints, books, scarves inspired by Monet's palette). It is pleasant but not a reason to extend your time ashore. If you want broader French market shopping, Vernon on a Tuesday or Friday is a better bet.
Once ashore, the village of Giverny is entirely walkable. The gardens, the Impressionism museum, and the handful of village restaurants and shops are all within a 10-minute walk of each other.
Some river lines tender to Vernon rather than directly to Giverny. From Vernon, taxis and organised shuttle buses cover the 5 km to Giverny village.

Yes, strongly recommended. In peak summer months (June-August), same-day queues can be 45-60 minutes, which is a significant chunk of a short port call. Book online before you sail and bring your confirmation on your phone.
Allow 15-20 minutes each way for the tender process, including boarding and the ride itself. On a 5-hour port call, you realistically have 3.5-4 hours in the village — plan accordingly and always factor in the return tender wait.
Honestly, the village has limited draw beyond the Fondation. Repeat visitors might enjoy Vernon's market town or a longer lunch at the Baudy, but the port is primarily a one-attraction stop.
Yes, easily. The route from the tender landing to the Fondation Claude Monet entrance is a straightforward 5-10 minute walk along one main road. No guide is needed unless you want historical context en route.
With difficulty. The tender boarding can be challenging, and the Fondation's gravel paths and the house interior are not fully wheelchair accessible. Contact the Fondation directly and discuss tender assistance with your cruise line before the port call.
