Gozo sits just north of Malta, reached by a 25-minute ferry from Cirkewwa. Most cruise ships don't dock in Gozo directly — instead they call at Valletta or use a tender to bring passengers to the Mġarr ferry terminal on Gozo's southeastern tip. From Mġarr, you'll need transport to get anywhere useful, so factor that into your planning from the start.
The island is noticeably quieter and more rural than Malta. Villages of golden limestone, terraced fields, and the dramatic Citadel in Victoria are the main draws. There's no mass tourism infrastructure here — which is the whole point. Gozo moves at its own pace, and that's either refreshing or frustrating depending on what you're after.
A port day here rewards those who pick two or three things and do them properly: the Citadel, a good lunch in Victoria, and a beach if time allows. Trying to see the entire island in a single cruise stop leads to a lot of rushed taxi rides between underwhelming stops. Keep it simple.
Note: if your ship is calling at Valletta and Gozo is listed as a shore excursion option, you're essentially being ferried across. That's fine — but factor in the ferry crossing time (roughly 25 minutes each way) plus the wait. Your effective time on Gozo may be shorter than your total port time suggests.
Gozo is one of the safest places in the Mediterranean. Petty crime is rare, and the island has a genuine community feel rather than a tourist-zone atmosphere. Use normal common sense with valuables at beaches. The main hazard is the sun in summer — it's stronger than it feels in a sea breeze — and the terrain, which involves uneven stone paths and steps at the Citadel.
The Citadel involves significant steps and steep inclines — not realistic for wheelchair users without assistance. Victoria's main square and surrounding streets are mostly flat but cobblestoned. Ramla Bay requires a short walk downhill to the beach from the car park. Gozo in general is not a highly accessible destination for those with limited mobility, and the ferry crossing itself requires boarding from a dock.
The Mġarr ferry terminal is functional but not a destination. There's a small café, a few parked taxis, and a harbour with fishing boats. It's pleasant for five minutes but there's no reason to linger. The taxis and buses are right outside — get your bearings quickly and move on toward Victoria or wherever you've decided to go. Don't expect a tourist welcome centre or obvious signage; it's a working port.
The standout choice — wide, sandy, and distinctive for its warm-toned sand. Safe swimming, a bar on site, and not overly commercial.
Smaller and harder to reach — requires a walk down a steep path — but more secluded and rarely crowded. No facilities, so bring your own supplies. Worth it if you want peace.
A small sheltered cove in a fishing village. More rocky than sandy but the water is clear and the village setting is charming. Good for a swim and lunch combination.
Gozo has a genuinely good food scene for an island this size. The staples to try are ftira (Gozitan flatbread often topped with tuna, olives, tomatoes — a UNESCO-recognised food), pastizzi (savory pastries, best eaten warm from a bakery), and fresh fish from local harbour catches. Victoria has a solid range of restaurants around and near It-Tokk Square. Don't expect fine dining but expect honest, well-priced food.
Restaurants in Xlendi village are worth a lunch stop if you're heading that way — waterfront setting, fresh seafood, and not overpriced. Budget €12-20 per person for a full meal with a drink. The worst food trap is sticking to whatever is closest to the ferry terminal — there's not much there worth eating.
Gozo produces its own lace (known as bizzilla), hand-woven textiles, local honey, and sea salt. Victoria has a handful of craft shops around the main square. None of it is high-pressure or aggressive — you can browse without being hassled. Skip anything obviously mass-produced and stamped 'Malta' — it likely wasn't made on Gozo. The Citadel area has a few studios where artisans work on-site, which is more interesting than a souvenir stall.
Most practical option for small groups. Drivers at Mġarr ferry terminal will take you to Victoria, beaches, or on a circuit of the island.

Most don't. The majority of ships dock at Valletta in Malta, and Gozo is reached by ferry from Cirkewwa or via a ship-organised excursion. Some smaller ships may tender into Mġarr harbour directly — check your ship's itinerary.
It depends on your pace. Gozo has a distinctly different, quieter feel than Valletta — more rural, more relaxed, with better beaches. If you want contrast, yes. If you're already tight on time, prioritise whichever appeals most and do it properly.
The ferry crossing from Cirkewwa (north Malta) to Mġarr (Gozo) takes approximately 25 minutes. Ferries run frequently but during peak season there can be vehicle queues — foot passengers board more easily.
No — it collapsed into the sea during a storm in March 2017. Dwejra Bay where it stood is still a scenic and worthwhile stop, but adjust your expectations if this was your main reason for visiting.
Yes, and honestly a focused half day (3-4 hours ashore) is more rewarding than a rushed full day trying to cover everything. The Citadel and Victoria plus one beach or one archaeological site is the right scope for a short visit.
