Port Overview

Great Stirrup Cay is Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island in the Berry Islands. The island’s new pier is back open, so visiting ships can dock and guests can walk ashore directly from their ship. From the pier, the welcome plaza and tram service provide direct access to the beaches and island amenities. There is no town or independent commercial district; the visit is designed as a Norwegian-operated beach and recreation day.

This is not a port of cultural or economic interest. It is a carefully manicured beach day added to your itinerary. Most cruisers spend 4–6 hours: snorkel, eat, lounge, shower, return. The reef is modest but adequate for beginners; the beach is protected and shallow. There is zero obligation to do anything beyond sit on sand.

Great Tides Waterpark

Great Tides Waterpark has begun a limited soft opening ahead of its official September 4, 2026 grand opening. Access during the soft-opening period may be offered only on selected calls, so check the NCL app or onboard notices for your sailing. The nearly six-acre park includes 19 waterslides, a dynamic river, cliff jumps, family play areas, and food and drink venues. A paid day pass is required; Splash Harbor, the nearby children’s splash pad, is complimentary.

Is It Safe?

Great Stirrup Cay is extremely safe; it is a fully controlled, staffed private island. Security is present and visible. Petty theft is rare because the island hosts only cruise guests. No crime risk worth mentioning. Water safety is the main concern: rip currents are minimal, but always observe posted signage and ask staff about conditions before entering the reef.

Accessibility & Walkability

The reopened pier provides a direct walk-off arrival and makes access much easier for many guests with limited mobility. Beach terrain is still sandy, and some attractions may have separate accessibility requirements; speak with the onboard accessibility team before going ashore. Accessible restroom facilities are available near the main beach facilities.

Outside the Terminal

You walk from the ship across the reopened pier into the new welcome plaza. From there, trams connect the main beach and island attractions. Restrooms, changing facilities, complimentary dining, bars, loungers, and activity desks are available within the Norwegian-operated resort area.

Food on Great Stirrup Cay is limited and cruise-controlled. A casual grill near the beach serves burgers, jerk chicken, salads, and sandwiches ($8–15 USD). A small bar offers drinks and snacks. Do not expect restaurant-quality dining or variety. Most cruisers pre-purchase meal packages aboard ship or eat light. Bring your own snacks if you prefer control over cost and options.

Shopping

There is no shopping on Great Stirrup Cay. No vendor stalls, no gift shop, no retail of any kind. The island is beach-only. If you need sunscreen, a hat, or beach towel, bring it with you or purchase onboard before going ashore.
