Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Spend 2–3 hours at the puffin cliffs during nesting season (May–Aug), then wander the village and photograph the Arctic landscape. This is Grimsey's only real draw.
Best Beach
Not applicable. Grimsey's shoreline is rocky and Arctic; no swimming or beach recreation.
With Kids
Puffin spotting from the cliffs (age 8+) with strong supervision; short walk to the settlement to see the tiny church and colorful houses. Avoid steep terrain with very young children.
Only 3-4 Hours
Go straight to the puffin cliffs (5–10 min walk from tender) with binoculars, photograph from a safe distance, then explore the small settlement and old lighthouse. Skip interior hikes due to time.
Cheapest Option
Free: puffin viewing from public cliffs, walking the settlement, visiting the old lighthouse exterior. Pack snacks from the ship.
What To Avoid
Don't expect a hike to feel like a pleasant walk—terrain is rough and weather is unpredictable. Don't rely on shops, cafes, or restaurants; the settlement has almost no visitor infrastructure. Don't linger if winds pick up; tendering can become unsafe.

Top Things To Do

1

Puffin viewing at the breeding cliffs

During May–August, Atlantic puffins nest in burrows on the grassy cliffs above the island's north shore. From a distance of 10–50 meters, you can observe them with binoculars. They are colorful (orange beaks and feet), clumsy, and photogenic. This is Grimsey's primary attraction and the reason most cruisers visit.

1.5–2.5 hours Free if independent; $30–50 USD if via guided excursion (often included with cruise)$$

⚡ Popular — books out early. Reserve before you sail.

2

Settlement walk and village exploration

Wander the tiny settlement, photograph the colorful houses, visit the small stone church (usually locked), and see the island school and farms. The village is picturesque in a stark, remote way and offers insight into how Icelanders live on an isolated Arctic island.

45 minutes to 1.5 hours FreeFree
3

Lighthouse and panoramic views

An old lighthouse and beacon stand on elevated points of the island and offer Arctic Ocean views. The structures are accessible and unguarded; panoramic photography is worthwhile if weather permits.

1–1.5 hours including the climb FreeFree
4

Arctic Circle certificate photo (if present on island)

Grimsey straddles the Arctic Circle. Some cruises place a marker or sign on the island for a ceremonial photo. This is a low-effort memento but often just a simple painted stone or cairn rather than a formal monument.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Port Overview

Grimsey is Iceland's northernmost inhabited island, located 40 km north of the mainland coast, and sits just south of the Arctic Circle. Ships anchor offshore and passengers tender ashore to a small concrete jetty. The island has no port infrastructure, only a handful of residents, and a stark, windswept character defined by black lava fields, grassy cliffs, and—during summer months—large breeding populations of Atlantic puffins. There are no shops, hotels, restaurants, or real amenities for visitors. Most cruisers come here for one reason: to see puffins and experience an authentic Arctic outpost. A full day is not necessary; 4–5 hours is the realistic and sufficient visit. This is not a leisurely port stop; it is a nature destination best suited to expedition-cruise passengers who expect and welcome isolation and basic conditions.

Is It Safe?

Grimsey is safe from crime, but weather and terrain pose real risks. Winds regularly exceed 30 km/h, and temperature hovers near 0–10°C even in summer. Cliffs are unrailed and crumbling in places; stay back from edges and never lean over for photos. Tendering can be cancelled or delayed without warning if sea state worsens; build in buffer time and be prepared to return to the ship early. The settlement has no medical facilities; serious injuries require helicopter evacuation. Cell service is unreliable; do not count on mobile communication. Wear appropriate gear (waterproof jacket, warm layers, sturdy boots) or you will be miserable within minutes.

Accessibility & Walkability

Grimsey is not accessible for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility. The jetty has no ramp, terrain is uneven and rocky, trails are unmarked and steep, and there is no paved infrastructure anywhere on the island. Anyone with mobility challenges should consider staying aboard or confirm with the cruise line whether adapted excursions are possible.

Outside the Terminal

Stepping off the tender onto the small concrete jetty, you immediately face wind, cold, and austere landscape. The 'settlement' is visible within a 5–10 minute walk: a cluster of colorful wooden houses, a tiny church, a small school, and scattered farm buildings. There is no formal welcome area, no souvenir shops, and no café. The entire feel is one of isolation and remoteness—which is the whole point. Expect to be the only cruise visitors around; Grimsey receives perhaps 1,000–2,000 cruise passengers per year across all lines.

Beaches Near the Port

Not applicable

Grimsey has no beaches. The coastline is rocky and Arctic; water temperature is near freezing year-round. Swimming is not an option.

Local Food & Drink

There are no restaurants or cafés on Grimsey. The settlement has a very small shop that may stock basic groceries, but supplies are erratic and limited. Do not plan to buy food ashore. Bring snacks and a water bottle from the ship. Many cruise lines provide a packed lunch as part of the tender excursion, but confirm in advance. If you are sensitive to hunger or have dietary needs, eat a full meal aboard the ship before tendering ashore.

Shopping

Shopping is minimal to non-existent. There is no souvenir shop, gift store, or formal retail. The small community shop sells basics for residents but rarely stocks items of interest to visitors. Do not plan a shopping visit; bring any mementos or gifts you want from the mainland.

Money & Currency

Currency
Icelandic króna (ISK)
USD Accepted?
No
Card Payments
Card payment unlikely; no ATM on island; settle with ship or bring cash from Akureyri or Reykjavik
ATMs
None on Grimsey; nearest ATM is 40+ km away on mainland
Tipping
Not customary; not expected
Notes
The island is almost entirely cash-free for residents and has no visitor economy. If you need ISK, exchange it aboard or in a mainland port before arrival.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
June–August (puffin season, longer daylight, slightly warmer, 8–15°C)
Avoid
October–March (darkness, severe cold, gales, high tendering cancellation risk)
Temperature
May–September: 3–12°C; wind 20–40 km/h; rain or mist frequent
Notes
Grimsey is one of Iceland's windiest locations. Weather deteriorates rapidly. Bring multiple layers, waterproof jacket, and windproof pants regardless of season. Tendering is cancelled if wind exceeds ~35 km/h or if swell is too high.

Airport Information

Airport
Akureyri Airport (AKU)
Distance
40 km south by sea; ~1.5 hours by boat
Getting there
Most cruisers depart from or arrive at Akureyri on the mainland; Grimsey is a port stop only. Some cruises include mainland transfers.
Notes
Grimsey itself has a small airstrip, but no commercial service. All passenger access is by sea. If booking flights, use Akureyri as the reference point.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Pack a waterproof jacket and windproof layer even if the ship's forecast looks mild; Grimsey's weather is extreme and changeable, and you will regret being underdressed.
  • Bring binoculars for puffin viewing; binoculars make the difference between spotting distant birds and missing them entirely.
  • Eat a full meal before tendering ashore; there is nowhere to buy food, and hunger combined with wind and cold ruins the experience.
  • Download a map or ask your guide where key points of interest are; the island has no signage, and trails are unmarked.
