Our picks in Hakodate
A stunning five-pointed star-shaped military fort built in 1864, surrounded by a scenic moat and cherry trees. The earthen ramparts are climbable, and views from the top overlook the city and bay. A small museum inside details the site's role in Japan's samurai-era transition. The park itself is peaceful and less crowded than comparable Japanese historical sites.
A lively indoor market packed with stalls selling the freshest sashimi, sushi, scallops, sea urchin, and local Hokkaido seafood. Most stalls have small food counters where you can order a bowl of sushi or seafood donburi (rice bowl) for ¥1,500–3,000 (~$10–20 USD). The atmosphere is chaotic but welcoming, and prices are fair compared to sit-down restaurants. Arrive early (9–11 a.m.) for the best selection and fewer crowds.
A charming hillside neighborhood with Meiji-era buildings, foreign warehouses converted into shops, and the iconic Harissa Orthodox Church with its distinctive Russian onion domes (1859). The area is walkable, photogenic, and feels less touristy than equivalent districts in Kyoto. Good for browsing crafts, coffee, and local art; the views down to the bay are excellent.

Tours that fit this port day →Hakodate sits on Hokkaido's southern tip and is one of Japan's most underrated cruise stops. Ships dock at a dedicated cruise pier about 1.5 km south of downtown; walking to the city is possible but the tram system is faster and cheap. The port is known for two things: Goryokaku Fort, a remarkable 1864 star-shaped military structure, and Hakodate Seafood Market (Ajigakudan), where you'll find some of Japan's freshest sushi, scallops, and local fish at breakfast and lunch prices. This is a half-day to full-day port depending on pace; it's not a beach destination and is often quieter than Kobe or Yokohama, which means less tourist fatigue.
Hakodate is one of Japan's safest cities. Petty theft is rare, violent crime is virtually absent, and locals are helpful to confused tourists. The port area and downtown streets are well-lit and busy during the day. No neighborhoods to avoid during daylight hours. Standard precautions (watch bags on crowded tram) apply, but this is genuinely low-risk compared to most global cruise ports.
Downtown Hakodate is mostly flat and walkable for those with limited mobility, though tram boarding requires a small step. Goryokaku Fort has gravel paths and some stairs to climb the earthen ramparts; wheelchairs can explore the lower moat paths but not reach the fort walls themselves. Accessible taxis are available; ask your concierge to arrange ahead if needed. The seafood market is compact and relatively crowded, but navigable with mobility aids if you move slowly.
You'll exit into a quiet, modern cruise terminal area with clear signage pointing to tram stops and taxis. The immediate surroundings are industrial and low-key—not touristy. Within a 5-minute walk you'll reach the beginning of downtown's shopping and restaurant streets, which feel orderly and Japanese in the best way: clean, safe, organized, and full of local energy rather than cruise-ship crowds.
Hakodate is a working harbor city on Hokkaido; beaches are not a feature of the cruise port experience. Nearby hot springs (onsen) are available outside the port area but require multiple transport transfers and time.
Hakodate's reputation for seafood is earned: the water is cold and rich, and the fishing tradition is strong. Beyond the seafood market, seek out small sushi bars and seafood donburi shops in downtown Hakodate, especially around the Motomachi area. Ramen is also a Hokkaido specialty; look for ramen alleyways (yokocho) scattered throughout downtown. Prices are 30–40% cheaper than Tokyo or Osaka, and quality is high. Most casual restaurants have picture menus or English signage; don't hesitate to point at what you want.
Downtown Hakodate has souvenir shops selling local Hokkaido crafts (glassware, wood items) and regional snacks (seafood crackers, melon candy). The main shopping street (Wakamatsu-dori) is compact and not aggressively touristy. Motomachi has small galleries and boutiques. Nothing here justifies a serious shopping trip; the real value is in eating fresh seafood and then using the rest of your time for history and walking.
Hakodate's tram network is frequent, clean, and covers downtown and most tourist spots. Single ride from port to downtown or Goryokaku area.
Routes & timesReadily available at port; good for direct trips to Goryokaku or avoiding multiple transfers.
