Cozumel gives you three straightforward choices for a port day: walk into San Miguel, take a taxi to a west-coast beach or make snorkeling the main event. Decide among them before you step off the ship, because the pier determines how the day begins.
The easiest Cozumel day begins with the pier. Punta Langosta places you near central San Miguel. International Pier and Puerta Maya sit farther south, where a taxi is the practical first move for town or a beach. Once you know that starting point, choose one main plan and leave the rest of the island for another call.

Start with the pier named on your sailing
Cozumel has three main west-side cruise piers: Punta Langosta, International Pier and Puerta Maya. Punta Langosta is walkable to central San Miguel in about 5-10 minutes. The southern piers are a short taxi ride from town.
That difference should decide the first hour. From Punta Langosta, a waterfront walk and lunch can begin on foot. From a southern pier, walking is a poor setup for either downtown or a beach day. Taxis are the standard transport from every pier, and the trip to San Miguel or nearby beach clubs is generally about 5-15 minutes, with longer journeys to the far south or east side.
Taxi fares are usually posted by zone at the port and should be confirmed before getting in. Many taxis are cash only. Agree on the destination and fare before the car moves, then protect enough time for the return.
Before leaving the ship, write down the pier name and the all-aboard time. Those two details prevent the most avoidable mistakes: giving a driver the wrong return point or treating the departure time as the moment to arrive back. From Punta Langosta, keep walking if San Miguel is the plan. From International Pier or Puerta Maya, choose the taxi line rather than trying to turn the waterfront road into an improvised walk.
Choose one of three workable days
Three plans work especially well, and each uses the pier differently.
San Miguel with very little transport
This is the cleanest plan from Punta Langosta. Walk into central San Miguel, use the waterfront for a meal and browsing, then return the same way. It is the best low-effort non-beach option and typically takes 2-3 hours. From International Pier or Puerta Maya, substitute a short taxi for the walk.
This plan suits a shorter call, a traveler who does not want a packaged beach day, or anyone who would rather keep the schedule under their own control. It also gives you the simplest fallback if weather or crowds make a water plan less appealing.
Keep the town day compact. Start with the waterfront, choose a place for lunch, and leave shopping until after the part you most want to see. From Punta Langosta, the 5-10 minute walk makes it easy to return without arranging another ride. From a southern pier, settle the return-taxi plan before lingering in town.
A west-coast beach day
The developed west-coast options are within a manageable taxi ride. Playa Palancar is about 15-25 minutes by taxi. The Paradise Beach area and Playa Mia area are each about 10-20 minutes. Chankanaab shoreline is about 10-15 minutes and combines swimming, snorkeling and facilities.
Those are travel-time guides, not current admission quotes, so check current rates. Pick the beach setup before leaving the pier, confirm the taxi arrangement and avoid turning a simple beach day into a sequence of speculative stops.
The best beach choice is the one that matches the group. Chankanaab combines water time with facilities. Playa Palancar requires a longer ride than the Paradise Beach or Playa Mia areas. Once you have chosen, go directly there and keep the same location as the centre of the day. Moving between beach areas spends time in taxis without adding much certainty.
Snorkeling or a structured water outing
Snorkeling and diving are central reasons to choose Cozumel, with enough reef time to make the activity the main event. A snorkeling or diving outing typically takes 2-4 hours, while the departure point varies by operator. Chankanaab is the more structured option when a group wants facilities alongside water time.
Timing matters more than the number of places advertised at the terminal. Use one operator, one meeting point and one return plan. When timing matters, use a ship excursion or a reputable operator and keep the return comfortably inside the ship’s cutoff.
Ask where the outing begins before paying. A meeting point near one pier may be inconvenient from another, and the departure point varies by operator. The useful comparison is not only the advertised water time; it is the full route from your gangway to the meeting point and back again.

The range of lines is another reason to begin with your own sailing. Ships use different piers and publish different windows. Confirm the pier and all-aboard time before choosing transport or committing to a water outing.
You do not need the full line list to plan the day, but it shows that advice written for one ship or terminal cannot be applied blindly to every arrival. Plan around current facilities, not an announced opening
Royal Caribbean has announced plans for Royal Beach Club Cozumel, but the project has run into legal and permitting hurdles and has no firm opening date.
For the current choice, use the established options. A Punta Langosta arrival supports San Miguel on foot. A southern-pier arrival supports a taxi to town, a beach club or a snorkeling plan. One main destination and a clear return route are enough.
If the announced opening is not confirmed, leave it out of the day’s decision entirely. San Miguel, the west-coast beach areas and structured snorkeling outings already give you workable choices using facilities described for the current port.
Two other Mexican calls worth comparing
If the itinerary also includes Costa Maya, plan that day separately instead of carrying Cozumel’s pier and taxi assumptions across to another port.
Do the same for Progreso. Keep its arrival point, transport and return time separate from the Cozumel plan.
Cozumel’s advantage is the clarity of its main day types. The pier tells you how to start, and the ship’s published window tells you how much fits. Decide between town, beach or water before you arrive, then keep the rest of the day simple.
