Igoumenitsa has a modern cruise terminal with both pier and tender capabilities depending on ship size and occupancy.
Corfu's UNESCO-listed old town is everything Igoumenitsa is not — stunning Venetian architecture, two imposing fortresses, atmospheric narrow lanes called kantounia, and a lively café culture on the Liston esplanade. It's the single best use of a long port day here.

Parga is a compact, picturesque coastal town built on a hillside overlooking turquoise coves, dominated by a Venetian castle. It's genuinely beautiful without being over-touristed and has excellent swimming beaches within easy walking distance of the center.
The seafront promenade is pleasant for a morning stroll, with views across to the Ionian islands. The small old quarter near the central clock tower has a handful of traditional kafeneions and a relaxed local pace that feels authentically Greek rather than touristy.
Augustus Caesar founded this city after his victory at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. The ruins are spread across a large archaeological park near Preveza and include a stadium, Byzantine basilicas, and impressive city walls. An undervisited and genuinely significant classical site.
The mythological River of the Dead flows through a scenic delta near Mesopotamos. You can walk or kayak the lower Acheron gorge and visit the ancient oracle of the dead (Necromanteion), one of Greece's more unusual historical attractions. The river walk itself is cool, shaded, and refreshing on a hot day.

Igoumenitsa sits on Greece's northwestern Epirus coast, facing the Ionian Sea. Ships dock at a busy commercial and ferry port that handles constant traffic between Greece, Italy, and Corfu. The dock area is straightforward — no long tender rides, no complex transfers — but be prepared to share the waterfront with large ferry vessels rather than a manicured cruise terminal.
Honestly, Igoumenitsa is not a destination in its own right. The town is clean and functional, the promenade is pleasant, and the local food is good value, but the architecture and atmosphere don't compare to Greece's more celebrated ports. Its real value is as a jumping-off point: Corfu is a 90-minute ferry ride away, the historic coastal town of Parga is under an hour by road, and the ancient site of Nikopolis is accessible for history-focused travelers.
If your ship is here for a half-day, a walk around town and a long lunch is a perfectly fine way to spend it. If you have six or more hours, use Igoumenitsa as the transit point it was built to be and head somewhere more rewarding.

Igoumenitsa is a safe, low-crime town with no specific concerns for tourists. The port area can be busy and slightly chaotic with ferry traffic, so stay aware of vehicle movement near the dock. Standard Mediterranean precautions apply: watch your belongings in crowded areas near the waterfront and at the bus station. There is no significant scam culture targeting cruise passengers here.
The waterfront promenade is flat, paved, and wheelchair-friendly. The town center is mostly manageable on flat streets, though some older side streets have uneven surfaces. Ferry boarding can be challenging for wheelchair users depending on sea conditions and vessel type — confirm accessibility with the ferry operator before committing to a Corfu trip. The port itself has a straightforward, flat gangway access for most ships.
You step off the ship directly onto the working port waterfront. There will be ferry vehicles, trucks, and passenger traffic nearby — it's industrial in feel for the first minute or two. Walk past the ferry terminal buildings and within five minutes you're on the proper town promenade with cafés, a small park, and open sea views. It's not dramatic, but it's easy to navigate and there's no pressure from vendors or tour touts.

The closest beach to the port — a long, pebbly stretch with calm, clear water. It's a local beach without much infrastructure, which keeps it quiet and unpretentious. Not a showpiece beach, but perfectly fine for a quick swim.
Parga's cove beaches — especially Valtos and Lichnos — are significantly more attractive than anything near Igoumenitsa itself: clear turquoise water, dramatic hillside backdrops, and a mix of sand and fine pebble. Worth the drive if beaches are a priority.
Igoumenitsa has solid, honest Greek food at local prices — this is not a tourist-inflated dining scene. Head to the streets just behind the promenade for grills serving souvlaki and gyros, traditional tavernas with Epirus lamb dishes and pites (savory pies), and waterfront cafés for Greek coffee and pastries. The local specialty to look for is the rich, meaty pites of Epirus — cheese pies and meat pies made with hand-rolled pastry. Budget $10-18 USD for a full sit-down lunch with wine or beer at a mid-range taverna.
For Corfu day-trippers: Corfu Town has a more developed restaurant scene with good pastitsada (beef in tomato sauce) and sofrito. Avoid the tourist-facing restaurants on the main square and walk a few streets inland for better value.
Shopping in Igoumenitsa is limited and largely practical rather than tourist-oriented. The market street near the center has a few shops selling Greek olive oil, local honey, herbs, and packaged foods — good for edible souvenirs at fair prices. There are no major craft markets or artisan shops. If shopping is a priority, save your euros for Corfu Town, which has a much wider range of ceramics, lace, and olive wood products in its old town lanes.

The port is directly on the waterfront. The town center, promenade, market street, and most cafés are within 10-15 minutes on foot.
Taxis wait near the port entrance. Useful for Drepano Beach or reaching the bus station.

Unless your port call is short, take a day trip. Igoumenitsa is a tidy working port town but lacks the charm or sights to fill a full day. Corfu or Parga are dramatically more rewarding.
Walk to the ferry terminal adjacent to the cruise dock and buy a ticket at the booth — sailings are frequent throughout the day. Fast ferries take about 45 minutes; standard ferries take around 90 minutes.
Yes. The waterfront promenade begins immediately outside the port area, and the town center is a 5-10 minute flat walk. No transport needed to explore the immediate area.
It's manageable but not exciting for kids in town. A ferry trip to Corfu or a beach day at Parga gives families far more to work with and makes the day genuinely enjoyable for children.
Yes — multiple ATMs are within a 10-15 minute walk of the dock in the town center. Get cash before heading out on day trips, as smaller towns and rural sites may have limited ATM access.
