Ships anchor offshore; tender boats transport passengers to the riverbank. There is no town at Koh Chen itself—it is a landing point, not a destination.

The port lies roughly midway between the towns of Kompong Cham (upstream, ~25 km) and Kratie (downstream, ~70 km). Most cruise lines offer organized shore excursions to nearby villages, floating villages, or rubber plantations rather than independent exploration. First-time embarkation days are best spent aboard ship, learning the layout and meeting crew. For passengers with significant port time, pre-arranged excursions with the cruise line or a local guide are your only practical option.

Is It Safe?

Koh Chen itself is simply a landing point; there is no crime risk at the anchorage or riverbank. The surrounding region (Kampong Cham Province) is generally safe for tourists, especially in organized groups during daylight.

Real hazards are logistical: the Mekong River has strong currents and seasonal water-level swings, tidal conditions can be unpredictable, and road infrastructure to nearby towns is basic. Outside the Terminal

When you disembark via tender, you step onto a wooden jetty or dock with rope railings. Beyond it, the immediate riverside is lined with tall trees, local boats, and informal structures (repair sheds, fish traps). There are usually no vendors, shops, or facilities—this is a working riverbank, not a tourist zone. Local people may be fishing or loading boats. The air is hot, humid, and sometimes smells of river mud and fish. Unless you are part of an organized excursion, there is nowhere obvious to go, and no taxi rank or information booth.

Koh Chen has no shops. Nearby towns like Kompong Cham have basic markets, textiles, and handicrafts, but few high-quality souvenirs.
