Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Spend the morning in Maastricht: walk the medieval walls, explore Vrijthof, visit one of the two great basilicas, and eat lunch on a café terrace. It is compact, beautiful, and genuinely different from the rest of the Netherlands.
Best Beach
Not relevant — Limburg is an inland river region with no beach options.
With Kids
Rent bikes from the dock area or nearby shops and ride the flat riverside paths toward nearby villages. Alternatively, the underground Roman-era Maastricht underground (Caves of St. Pietersberg) is genuinely interesting for curious kids and adults.
Only 3-4 Hours
Head straight into Maastricht's old town — walk Vrijthof square, cross the Sint Servaasbrug bridge, browse the market stalls, and grab a coffee or local Limburger tart at a café on Onze Lieve Vrouweplein. All of this is within easy walking distance of the riverfront.
Cheapest Option
Walk into Maastricht's historic center for free — the squares, the Basilica of Saint Servatius exterior, the old fortifications, and the markets cost nothing. Budget around €5-12 for coffee and a slice of vlaai (Limburg fruit tart).
What To Avoid
Don't waste time buying generic Dutch souvenirs in tourist shops near the waterfront — they're overpriced and not local. Also skip rushed hop-on bus tours if the weather is good; Maastricht is far better on foot.

Top Things To Do

1

Vrijthof Square and the Two Basilicas

Maastricht's central square is one of the finest in the Netherlands — wide, lined with café terraces, and flanked by two historic churches: the Basilica of Saint Servatius (the oldest in the Netherlands) and Saint John's Church with its distinctive red tower. Free to walk the square; church entry is low cost.

1-2 hours €3-6 USD for church interiors$
2

Sint Servaasbrug and Riverside Walk

The medieval Sint Servaasbrug bridge is one of the oldest in the Netherlands and a genuinely beautiful structure. Walk across it, then follow the west bank promenade for views back toward the city. Free and easy.

30-45 min FreeFree
3

Caves of St. Pietersberg (Maastricht Underground)

An extensive network of man-made tunnels carved from marl limestone beneath the city — used for shelter during WWII and historically for centuries. Guided tours are required and genuinely interesting, not gimmicky.

4

Onze Lieve Vrouweplein (Our Lady's Square) and Food Market

A quieter, more intimate square a short walk from Vrijthof, lined with excellent cafés and restaurants. On market days it hosts local produce stalls. This is the best place to eat lunch and soak up the Burgundian atmosphere Maastricht is known for.

1 hour Lunch €10-20 USD$
5

South Limburg Countryside and Castles (half-day excursion)

If your cruise line offers a coach or cycling excursion into the hilly South Limburg countryside — past orchards, medieval castles like Valkenburg ruins, and hilltop villages — it is worth taking. This is the part of the Netherlands that looks nothing like the Netherlands.

6

Bookstore Selexyz Dominicanen

A 13th-century Dominican church converted into what is consistently rated one of Europe's most beautiful bookstores. Even if you don't buy a book, it's a remarkable interior worth 20 minutes inside.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Port Overview

River cruise ships calling at Limburg, Netherlands dock along the Maas (Meuse) river, typically in or near Maastricht — the region's main city and one of the most genuinely likeable stops on the Rhine and Meuse itinerary. Maastricht has a distinctive character that feels less stereotypically Dutch and more Burgundian, shaped by centuries of Spanish, French, and Belgian influence. The old town is compact and walkable, the food culture is notably better than most Dutch cities, and the historic core rewards anyone willing to slow down.

Most river cruise lines — Uniworld, Viking, AmaWaterways, Emerald, Avalon, Scenic, Tauck, Riviera Travel, and APT — include Maastricht as either a dedicated port day or an embarkation and disembarkation point. If you're starting or ending a cruise here, it's well worth arriving a day early or staying a day late, as the city deserves more than a hurried few hours.

The surrounding Limburg province is the most hilly part of the Netherlands — rolling green landscapes, castles, and cycling trails that bear almost no resemblance to the flat polders most people picture. South Limburg in particular is excellent for cyclists. That said, if your time is limited, the city of Maastricht itself offers enough history, food, and architecture to fill a solid half day without leaving the center.

Is It Safe?

Maastricht and the broader Limburg region are very safe by any standard. Petty theft in busy squares and markets is possible, as in any European tourist area — keep an eye on bags on café terraces and in crowds around Vrijthof. There are no significant areas to avoid in the historic center. The river paths and cycling routes are well-maintained and safe at all times during daylight hours.

Accessibility & Walkability

The city center of Maastricht is reasonably accessible for wheelchair users on main streets and squares, though cobblestone sections in the medieval core can be uneven and challenging. The Sint Servaasbrug bridge has steps at one end; accessible alternatives exist nearby. South Limburg's hilly terrain is not wheelchair-friendly for independent exploration. Most river cruise ships dock directly at a riverside pier with gangway access, but confirm ramp assistance with your cruise line ahead of time.

Outside the Terminal

Stepping off a river cruise pier in Maastricht, you'll typically find yourself on the east bank of the Maas, a short walk from one of the river bridges leading into the historic center. The waterfront is pleasant and uncluttered — no aggressive taxi touts or souvenir stands blocking the way. Orientation is easy: cross the bridge, and within five minutes you're walking streets that date back to Roman times.

Local Food & Drink

Limburg has its own food identity that sets it apart from the rest of the Netherlands. The vlaai — a flat, open fruit tart with various fillings — is the regional specialty and available in every bakery and café. Try one. For lunch, Onze Lieve Vrouweplein and the streets around it offer a good mix of Burgundian-influenced cafés serving local cheese, charcuterie, and Dutch classics. Maastricht has a disproportionately high number of good restaurants for a city its size, reflecting the French and Belgian influence. Beer culture is also strong — local brews and Belgian beers flow freely at almost every café terrace. Budget €10-18 USD for a decent café lunch.

Shopping

Maastricht is one of the better Dutch cities for independent shopping — the Stokstraat area features boutiques, antique dealers, and design shops in historic buildings rather than the chain stores that dominate most Dutch high streets. The Markt square hosts a weekly general market. Limburg vlaai and local cheeses make practical edible souvenirs. Skip the generic windmill and wooden clog trinkets near the main tourist squares.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Arrive in Maastricht a day early if embarking here — the city deserves more than a rushed morning, and there are excellent hotels within walking distance of the dock.
  • Pick up a vlaai from a local bakery rather than a café terrace for roughly half the price and the same quality.
  • The street market at Markt square runs Wednesday and Friday mornings — time your visit accordingly for the best atmosphere.
  • If cycling, stick to the flat riverside and city paths unless you're genuinely fit — South Limburg's hills will catch unprepared riders off guard.
  • The Dominicanen bookstore is free to enter and one of the most visually striking interiors in the city — worth a 20-minute detour even if you're not buying anything.
  • Confirm with your cruise director whether Maastricht or a smaller Limburg dock is your actual stop — some river itineraries dock at different points along the Maas.
