Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Walk the promenade, swim at Playa de Las Vistas, then eat grilled fish at a harbour-side restaurant. Simple, genuinely enjoyable, and no transport needed.
Best Beach
Playa de Los Cristianos is the closest — dark volcanic sand, calm water, and beach bars within walking distance of the pier. Playa de Las Vistas (15-minute walk) is larger, cleaner, and less crowded.
With Kids
Head to Playa de Las Vistas — shallow, sheltered water, sandy underfoot, and ice cream kiosks nearby. Older kids can take the short ferry to La Gomera for a scenic half-day adventure.
Only 3-4 Hours
Walk the seafront promenade to Playa de Los Cristianos, park yourself on the beach for 90 minutes, then grab lunch at one of the harbour-facing terrace restaurants before heading back. The whole loop is under 2km.
Cheapest Option
Walk to either beach, bring your own snacks, and spend the day in the sun. Total cost: essentially zero. A sunbed and umbrella rental runs around €6-10 per person if you want it.
What To Avoid
The main shopping strip near the harbour is heavily tourist-oriented souvenir stalls — not worth your time unless you need cheap sunscreen. Don't attempt Mount Teide from here on a short port day; the round trip by bus or taxi takes most of the day and leaves little time at the summit.

Quick Take

Port Type
Beach & Town Hybrid
Best For
Relaxed beach days, easy walkable town, families, and cruisers who want low-effort ashore time without renting a car
Avoid If
You want dramatic Canary Island scenery — Teide and the Anaga mountains take serious time and transport from here
Walkability
Good. The town centre, main beach, and seafront promenade are all within 10-15 minutes of the pier on foot
Budget Fit
Solid. You can have a full beach day and lunch for under €30 per person without trying hard
Good For Short Calls?
Yes, easily. The core of Los Cristianos is compact and satisfying in 3-4 hours

Port Overview

Los Cristianos sits on the sun-baked southern tip of Tenerife, and ships dock at the ferry and cruise pier right inside the bay — you step off and the town is immediately in front of you. It's a working port that also handles inter-island ferries to La Gomera and La Palma, so expect some movement and noise near the dock, but nothing overwhelming.

The town itself is honest holiday-resort territory: beach bars, seafront restaurants, souvenir shops, and a genuine local neighbourhood tucked behind the tourist strip. It's not Canary Islands at its most spectacular, but it is easy, warm, and genuinely pleasant for a port day. The beaches are calm and swimmable year-round thanks to southern Tenerife's reliable sun and shelter from trade winds.

Cruisers who want dramatic landscapes — Teide volcano, Masca gorge, Anaga rural park — can reach them, but it takes most of the day and requires a car or organised excursion. If your ship is here for less than eight hours, think twice before committing to a full island tour. The town and its beaches are a better use of a short call.

Playa de Las Vistas

The better beach on this stretch — longer, wider, and with slightly finer sand than Los Cristianos town beach. Protected by a breakwater so the water is usually calm enough for easy swimming. Sunbed and umbrella rental available along most of the beach.

Ferry Day Trip to La Gomera

Take the fast ferry across to San Sebastián de La Gomera — a quieter, greener island with a charming small town, good food, and a completely different pace from southern Tenerife. Works well for cruisers who want more than a beach day and have 6+ hours in port.

6

Lunch at the Harbour

The string of terrace restaurants around the harbour and seafront serve fresh fish, grilled octopus, and Canarian wrinkly potatoes (papas arrugadas) with mojo sauce. Not gourmet, but genuinely good value and better than tourist-trap resort towns further along the coast.

7

Whale and Dolphin Watching Boat Trip

Several operators depart from Los Cristianos harbour offering 2-hour cetacean watching trips in the straits between Tenerife and La Gomera — a genuinely productive spot for pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins year-round. Book at the pier or in advance to secure a spot.

Playa de Los Cristianos Town Beach

The original town beach — darker volcanic sand, smaller than Las Vistas, and busier given its central location. Water is calm and the setting is more local and lived-in than the resort beaches further west. A fine option if you just want to drop your towel and swim without walking far.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Is It Safe?

Los Cristianos is a very safe town for tourists. Petty theft — bags left unattended on beaches, phones left visible at café tables — is the main thing to watch. Don't leave valuables on the beach while you swim.

The seafront and town centre are busy with people throughout the day, which actually deters most opportunistic crime. Solo travellers and families can move around comfortably without concern.

Accessibility & Walkability

The port pier is flat and paved, and the seafront promenade extending to both beaches is also largely flat and smooth — good news for wheelchair users and anyone with mobility issues. Playa de Las Vistas has beach wheelchair access points in some areas; check locally for current availability. The town centre has standard uneven paving in places, but is broadly manageable. Taxis can accommodate most needs, and the beach areas require no significant climbing or rough terrain.

Outside the Terminal

You exit the pier into a busy waterfront area with ferry company offices, a few souvenir kiosks, and taxi ranks. It can feel a bit hectic for the first two minutes — ferries and cruise passengers sharing the same space. Turn left along the seafront and within five minutes you're on the proper promenade with restaurants and beach views. The transition from port zone to town is fast and the layout is intuitive.

Beaches Near the Port

Playa de Las Vistas

The standout beach in the immediate area — long, sheltered, with an artificial sandy base that's comfortable underfoot. Calm waves, blue flag standards, and beach bar access. Consistently less crowded than the town beach.

Playa de Los Cristianos

The original town beach directly adjacent to the harbour. Dark volcanic sand, compact, and lively. Good for a quick swim but fills up fast in high season. Convenience is its main advantage.

Playa del Duque (Costa Adeje)

A premium beach further west with finer imported sand, calmer water, and a more upscale feel. Worth the trip if you have time and want something above the norm, but requires a taxi or bus to reach.

Those wanting a step up in beach quality and willing to travel a bit further

Local Food & Drink

Los Cristianos has plenty of decent eating, mostly aimed at northern European tourists — so expect British pub menus, international fast food, and tourist set-menus alongside genuine Canarian spots. The key is to walk slightly away from the immediate tourist strip.

Look for restaurants serving papas arrugadas (small wrinkled potatoes with mojo verde or mojo rojo), fresh grilled fish, and Canarian cheeses. The harbour terrace area has several solid mid-range options where a full meal with wine won't break $25 USD per person. Avoid anything with a laminated photo menu at the entrance if you want quality.

For a quick and cheap bite, local bakeries and small cafés inland from the seafront serve coffee and pastries for well under $5. The Mercadona supermarket a short walk from the centre is useful for grabbing supplies before returning to the ship.

Shopping

Shopping in Los Cristianos is largely unremarkable tourist fare — souvenir shops, sunglasses stalls, and duty-free tobacco and alcohol outlets that cater to package holidaymakers. If you need sunscreen, a beach towel, or a cheap hat you forgot to pack, you'll find it easily and cheaply. For anything more characterful, the small local market (check locally for current days and times) occasionally has better craft and local food options. Don't come here expecting unique Canarian artisan goods — this is not that kind of port.

Money & Currency

Currency
Euro (EUR)
USD Accepted?
No
Card Payments
Widely accepted at restaurants, shops, and larger vendors. Smaller beach kiosks and market stalls may prefer cash.
ATMs
Several ATMs in the town centre within 10-15 minutes of the pier. Use bank-branded ATMs to avoid high independent machine fees.
Tipping
Not obligatory but rounding up or leaving 5-10% at restaurants is appreciated.
Notes
Canary Islands have lower VAT than mainland Spain (IGIC at 7% vs standard Spanish IVA at 21%), so prices are generally lower than you might expect for a Spanish resort.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
Year-round destination. October through April is particularly reliable — warm, dry, and not oppressively hot.
Avoid
No true bad months. July and August can be hot (30°C+) with more crowds. Occasional Saharan dust (calima) can reduce visibility and air quality, usually brief.
Temperature
22-28°C (72-82°F) during peak cruise season
Notes
Southern Tenerife gets significantly more sun than the north of the island. If you've been told Tenerife is cloudy, the south coast disproves that most of the year.

Airport Information

Airport
Tenerife South Airport (Reina Sofía, TFS)
Distance
Approximately 18km north of Los Cristianos
Getting there
TITSA bus line 111 connects the airport to Los Cristianos bus station (around 30-40 minutes). Taxis are faster at 20-25 minutes. No rail link.
Notes
If you're using Los Cristianos as an embarkation or disembarkation port, flying into TFS is the logical choice. Tenerife North (TFN) is much further and not worth it for the south of the island.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Walk to Playa de Las Vistas rather than settling for the town beach — it's only 10 minutes further and noticeably better.
  • If you want to do the La Gomera ferry trip, check the schedule before you leave the ship and confirm your ship's all-aboard time leaves enough buffer for the return crossing.
  • The Canary Islands have lower sales tax than mainland Spain, so perfume, electronics, and alcohol are genuinely cheaper here — worth knowing if you planned to buy any of those things.
  • Sunbeds on Los Cristianos beach fill up by mid-morning in summer — arrive early or bring your own towel and claim a spot on the sand.
  • Whale watching trips sell out in high season. If that's a priority, book online before your cruise or head to the harbour kiosks first thing when you arrive.
  • Avoid the taxi touts near the pier exit — walk to the official taxi rank 50 metres further on for metered, legitimate fares.
