Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
A 2-hour shared lagoon snorkeling and stingray tour departing from the tender dock — it uses your time efficiently, gets you on the water fast, and shows you why Moorea is special. Book in advance or confirm availability at the dock immediately after landing.
Best Beach
Temae Beach (also called Moorea Public Beach) is the closest public white-sand option near the main tender landing area and has calm, clear water ideal for swimming.
With Kids
A shared lagoon tour that includes the stingray sandbar is genuinely thrilling for older kids and surprisingly calm in the protected lagoon. Toddlers are better served staying at Temae Beach.
Only 3-4 Hours
Take the first tender ashore, join a shared lagoon tour from the dock (stingrays, sharks, coral gardens — roughly 2 hours on the water), then grab a cold Hinano beer and a poisson cru at a nearby snack shack before catching the tender back. You'll see the best of Moorea without overreaching.
Cheapest Option
Tender ashore, walk or take a short taxi to Temae Beach, swim for free, and buy lunch at a roadside roulotte (food truck) for roughly $10-15 USD per person.
What To Avoid
Skip renting a car for a full island circuit unless you have at least 5-6 hours ashore after tender time — it sounds appealing but most cruisers run out of time. Also avoid overpriced resort day passes unless you specifically want resort amenities; the public beach is free and nearly as good.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Quick Take

Port Type
Scenic Tender Port
Best For
Lagoon snorkeling, stingray and shark encounters, dramatic mountain scenery, and unhurried beach time in one of the world's most photogenic settings
Avoid If
You hate tender queues, get seasick easily in choppy open water, or need fully accessible terrain ashore
Walkability
Low — the tender landing areas are spread out, roads are long, and the heat makes walking impractical beyond a few hundred meters
Budget Fit
Moderate to high — French Polynesia prices apply; free beach access exists but most worthwhile activities cost money
Good For Short Calls?
Yes, but factor in 40-80 minutes of round-trip tender time before you plan anything

Port Overview

Moorea is one of those places that genuinely lives up to its reputation. The jagged volcanic peaks, electric-turquoise lagoon, and coral-fringed bays make it visually stunning from the moment your ship drops anchor. But everything here runs on tender time, and that shapes your entire day.

Ships anchor in or near Cook's Bay or Opunohu Bay — two of the most scenic anchorages in the Pacific. Tenders run continuously during port hours, but expect 20-30 minutes each way under normal conditions, longer if seas are choppy or queues are long. Budget that time into every plan before you commit to anything.

Infrastructure ashore is light. There's no real cruise terminal with a commercial strip — just a small dock, a handful of tour operators waiting for business, and the open road. That's actually part of the appeal. Moorea rewards people who get on the water fast and don't overthink the logistics.

Is It Safe?

Moorea is one of the safest destinations in the Pacific. Petty theft is rare but not unheard of — don't leave valuables on the beach unattended. The main hazard is the lagoon itself: coral can cut badly if you step on it barefoot, and the stingray and shark encounters on tours are managed but these are still wild animals. Follow guide instructions. Sun intensity is severe — UV index regularly hits extreme levels and many cruisers underestimate it on open-water tours.

Accessibility & Walkability

The tender ride itself is a barrier — stepping between a moving tender and a dock requires reasonable mobility. Ashore, the main coastal road is paved and mostly flat, but there are no smooth footpaths in most areas. Beaches involve sand and sometimes uneven coral. Wheelchair access is very limited throughout the island. Travelers with significant mobility needs should discuss tender feasibility with the ship's accessibility desk before committing to going ashore.

Outside the Terminal

There's no polished terminal — you step off the tender onto a small dock and immediately face a low-key scene: a few tour operator reps with handwritten signs, taxis idling, and open road in both directions. The surroundings are beautiful and uncrowded. Don't expect a shopping village or organized welcome area. If you haven't pre-booked a tour, walk a short distance along the dock to find operators and negotiate directly. It feels relaxed rather than chaotic.

Beaches Near the Port

Temae Beach (Public Beach)

The most accessible public beach in Moorea — white sand, calm water, and decent snorkeling directly from shore. No resort barrier, no entry fee. Can get crowded when multiple ships are in port but it's large enough to absorb visitors.

Distance
3-6 km from tender dock
Cost
Free; taxi fare to get there
Best for
Budget travelers, swimmers, anyone wanting relaxed beach time

Les Tipaniers Beach

A narrow, pretty beach adjacent to a small resort on the west side of the island. Calmer and less busy than Temae. Some facilities nearby including a restaurant. Better suited to those combining beach with lunch.

Distance
8-12 km depending on anchor location
Cost
Beach access is free; check locally for current rates on loungers if offered
Best for
Couples, those wanting a quieter beach with lunch nearby

Local Food & Drink

Eating well in Moorea on a port day requires a little planning. The easiest and most authentic option is a roadside roulotte — mobile food trucks that serve poisson cru (raw fish marinated in lime and coconut milk), grilled fish, and chow mein for $10-15 USD per person. They cluster near the main roads and are the best value on the island.

Sit-down restaurants exist but are spread around the island and require transport. Expect French Polynesian prices — a full restaurant meal easily runs $25-45 USD per person before drinks. Creperies and casual beach snack bars offer a middle ground.

Fresh fruit stands along the road sell pineapple, papaya, and coconut — Moorea pineapples in particular have a strong local reputation and are worth trying. Many cruisers grab fruit as a cheap, memorable snack between activities.

Shopping

Shopping is minimal and that's fine. A few small shops and artisan stalls near the tender dock sell black pearls, pareo fabric, vanilla, Hinano beer merchandise, and local crafts. Prices on black pearls vary enormously — if you're serious about buying, compare prices and ask about certification. Don't buy pearls from the first stall you see. There's no large market or commercial strip, so if shopping is your priority, Moorea will disappoint.

Money & Currency

Currency
French Pacific Franc (XPF / CFP)
USD Accepted?
No
Card Payments
Credit cards accepted at larger hotels and some tour operators, but many small vendors, roulettes, and local shops are cash only
ATMs
Limited — a few ATMs exist in Maharepa village but they are not always reliable. Get CFP cash in Papeete before sailing to Moorea if possible.
Tipping
Not customary in French Polynesia, though small tips for excellent service are appreciated
Notes
Some operators quote prices in Euros as well as CFP. USD is not widely accepted at the local level — don't assume you can pay in dollars at food stalls or small shops.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
May through October — drier, lower humidity, comfortable temperatures in the high 70s to low 80s°F (25-28°C)
Avoid
November through April brings higher humidity, heavier rainfall, and occasional cyclone risk — though Moorea is rarely directly hit
Temperature
78-88°F (26-31°C) with high humidity; UV index is extreme year-round
Notes
Even in the dry season, brief tropical showers are common. A morning rain almost never lasts and rarely ruins a port day. Sunscreen and a hat are non-negotiable regardless of season.

Airport Information

Airport
Moorea Airport (MOZ) — also called Temae Airport
Distance
Near Temae Beach, approximately 5-8 km from the main tender dock areas
Getting there
Taxi is the primary option. There is no public bus service.
Notes
Moorea Airport handles inter-island flights from Papeete (Tahiti-Faa'a International) — the flight is about 10 minutes. Most cruisers arrive and depart via Papeete, not Moorea directly. The airport is very small with limited facilities.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Get your tender ticket as early as the ship allows — on busy days, early tenders can be 30-45 minutes faster than mid-morning queues.
  • Book your lagoon tour in advance online rather than negotiating dockside — prices are similar but availability goes quickly when multiple ships call the same day.
  • Bring your own snorkel mask if you have one — rental gear on shared tours is functional but basic, and a good mask makes a genuine difference in the lagoon.
  • Carry CFP cash before you arrive in Moorea — ATMs are unreliable and many local vendors don't accept cards.
  • Confirm your ship's last tender time the night before and work backward — Moorea rewards those who manage their time tightly, not loosely.
  • Reef shoes or water shoes are worth packing — coral is sharp and the lagoon floor is uneven in places where tours anchor.
