Mykonos operates as a mixed port — larger ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the Old Port (Tourlos area), while smaller vessels may dock at the New Port (Tourlos Pier), approximately 2 km north of Mykonos Town (Chora).

Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
For most cruisers, the best plan is half a day in Mykonos Town and, if you still have time and energy, a short beach stop after. The town is what feels most distinctly Mykonos; the beaches are nice but not unique enough to justify wasting half your port day in traffic.
Best Beach
Platis Gialos is the safest mainstream choice for a cruise day: organized, easy enough to reach by bus or taxi, and better for a simple swim than the party-heavy names.
With Kids
Stick to Mykonos Town plus a calm beach such as Ornos or Platis Gialos. The maze-like lanes are fun, distances are short once in town, and you can bail out easily if the heat or crowds get annoying.
Only 3-4 Hours
Go straight to Mykonos Town, walk the waterfront to Little Venice, climb up toward the windmills, wander the back lanes, then stop for coffee or lunch before heading back. Do not try to add a far beach unless your ship has a long call and transport is clearly lined up.
Cheapest Option
Use the local bus or sea bus where available, then self-tour Mykonos Town on foot. A low-cost day is very doable with transport plus a bakery lunch, roughly $10-25 USD before food depending on what transport you use.
What To Avoid
Do not count on taxis being quick in peak season; queues can be ridiculous. Also avoid overcommitting to Paradise or Super Paradise unless beach clubs or partying are your main goal.

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Port Overview

Mykonos is one of those ports where the obvious thing is usually the right thing: go into Mykonos Town, wander, take photos, eat something decent, and only add a beach if you have the time. It is pretty, very walkable once you reach town, and very crowded when multiple ships are in. Expect charm, not serenity.

Cruise ships may dock at the new port in Tourlos or use tenders depending on ship size, weather, and schedule. The old town is not right outside the main cruise berth, so plan transport first and do not assume you can just stroll off into the postcard part.

This is a strong short-visit port, but not a great place to waste time on complicated logistics. If you want classic Cycladic streets and sea views, it delivers. If you are chasing a quiet, cheap Greek island day, this is not it.

Is It Safe?

Mykonos is generally easy for cruise visitors, but the real issues are crowds, heat, uneven paving, and traffic rather than serious crime. Watch bags in packed lanes and on transport, especially around the waterfront and bus stops, and keep your phone secure when stopping for photos.

The town's stone lanes can be slippery, especially with smooth sandals. If you go to beaches or beach clubs, keep an eye on your spending and your return timing; this is the kind of port where people miss the ship because they assumed getting back would be easy.

Accessibility & Walkability

Accessibility is mixed at best. The port-to-town part usually requires some transport planning, and Mykonos Town has narrow lanes, curbs, uneven stone surfaces, occasional steps, and crowd bottlenecks that can make wheelchair use difficult.

If mobility is limited, the most realistic plan is a direct vehicle transfer to a flatter edge of town or an accessible beach venue arranged in advance. Trying to freestyle the old town in peak season can be frustrating.

Outside the Terminal

At the new port, expect a functional arrival area rather than a scenic one. You will usually find tour meeting points, transport options, queues, and a general sense that everyone is trying to get somewhere else fast.

If you tender into the old harbor, the first impression is much better and more atmospheric, with town closer at hand. Either way, have your first move decided before you step off the ship.

Local Food & Drink

Mykonos is easy for a casual lunch, but it is not a bargain island. In town, the smartest move is usually to get one block back from the busiest waterfront and pick a simple taverna, bakery, or gyro spot instead of paying top money for the same sea view everyone else is chasing.

You will find plenty of Greek basics: grilled meats, salads, seafood, pastries, and coffee. Waterfront dining is fine if you want the setting and accept the markup. If you care more about value than scenery, eat in the inner lanes.

Shopping

Shopping is good if you want boutiques, jewelry, linen, sandals, and the usual polished-island retail. Mykonos Town is compact enough that browsing is easy, but prices trend high and many stores are aimed squarely at visitors.

If you just want a few practical souvenirs, skip the most photogenic lanes and compare a couple of side streets first.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Decide before you leave the ship whether you are doing town, beach, or both; trying to improvise everything in Mykonos wastes time fast.
  • If your ship docks at the new port, solve transport to town first and do not assume taxis will be waiting in useful numbers.
  • Wear proper shoes, not slick sandals; the stone lanes can be uneven and surprisingly slippery.
  • If you only have a standard port call, Mykonos Town is a better use of time than chasing a far beach club.
  • Start early if you want photos without wall-to-wall people, especially around Little Venice and the windmills.
  • Bring water and sun protection because shade is limited and reflected glare off white buildings is real.
  • Keep a close eye on return timing if you are using public transport or taxis in the afternoon, when queues get worse.
  • If crowds are frying your patience, leave the waterfront and head into the back lanes; they are usually more pleasant.
