Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Treat Nauta as a logistics hub, not a destination. Arrange arrival in Iquitos 1–2 days early; enjoy the city and smaller jungle experiences, then transfer to Nauta for embarkation.
Best Beach
Not relevant. Nauta is a river port on the Ucayali tributary; no beaches. Amazon lodges offer river-based activities instead.
With Kids
Stay in Iquitos (2 hours by car) and do a guided jungle walk or animal sanctuary visit before joining your river cruise.
Only 3-4 Hours
Arrange a pre-cruise hotel pickup in Iquitos; skip Nauta town entirely. Use the time for rest or a quick city walk in Iquitos if arriving early.
Cheapest Option
Book a basic hostel in Iquitos ($15–30/night). Hire a local guide for a 3-hour jungle walk ($40–80 USD total). Skip Nauta town.
What To Avoid
Do not expect restaurants, shops, or services in Nauta itself. The town has minimal facilities. Don't try day trips into the jungle from Nauta without a pre-arranged guide; infrastructure is absent.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Quick Take

Port Type
Expedition embarkation hub
Best For
Embarkation/disembarkation; not a day-visit destination. Pre-cruise stays recommended.
Avoid If
You expect shore excursions, beaches, or town exploration. Nauta is a transit point, not a port call.
Walkability
Very limited; town is small and isolated. Plan to stay near your hotel or arranged transfers only.
Budget Fit
Budget travelers should arrange lodging in Iquitos (2 hours away) or aboard ship. Nauta itself has minimal tourist infrastructure.
Good For Short Calls?
Not recommended. Use time for logistics, rest, or pre-cruise hotel check-in in Iquitos.

Port Overview

Nauta is a small, remote settlement on Peru's Ucayali River, approximately 140 km south of Iquitos. It serves primarily as an embarkation and disembarkation point for luxury Amazon river cruises (Uniworld, AmaWaterways, Lindblad, Explora Journeys), not as a cruise port for day tourism or shore excursions. Ships anchor in the river, and passengers board via tender.

The town itself is undeveloped, with minimal tourist infrastructure, shops, or restaurants. There is no traditional port terminal. Most cruisers either embark directly from Iquitos (2 hours by car) or stay overnight in Iquitos before transfer to Nauta. Going ashore in Nauta town is not recommended; the real experience begins once you board your river cruise.

Is It Safe?

Nauta itself is quiet and not known for serious crime, but it is extremely isolated with minimal police presence. The real concern is logistics: visitors should not venture into the surrounding jungle without a licensed guide, and infrastructure for independent travelers is essentially non-existent. Iquitos, 2 hours away, is larger and safer for pre-cruise stays, though standard urban caution applies (avoid night walks, keep valuables secure). The Amazon region carries inherent risks of insect-borne illness (dengue, malaria); consult a travel clinic before arrival and bring insect repellent.

Accessibility & Walkability

Nauta is not wheelchair accessible. The town has unpaved streets, and the dock area involves boarding tenders from small boats, which can be uneven and slippery. Passengers with mobility issues should contact their cruise line well in advance to arrange special assistance. Iquitos, while larger, also has challenging terrain and infrastructure. The river cruises themselves typically have elevators and accessible cabins; confirm details with your operator.

Outside the Terminal

Upon arrival by car from Iquitos, you will pull up to a simple dock area with a few small buildings and a mooring for tenders. There is no traditional cruise terminal. Local vendors may offer snacks or drinks, but selection is minimal. The atmosphere is quiet and utilitarian. From the dock, you board a tender to your ship anchored in the river. The whole process—check-in, tender transfer, settling into your cabin—typically takes 1–2 hours.

Beaches Near the Port

Not applicable

Nauta is located on a river tributary, not the coast. There are no beaches. River-based activities (canoe rides, swimming in designated areas) are included in cruise itineraries but require staying on your ship or joining organized lodge excursions.

Local Food & Drink

Nauta has virtually no restaurants or commercial food service. Your options are a handful of basic shops selling packaged snacks, or arranging meals through your hotel if you stay overnight. Food quality and hygiene standards are uncertain. Eat in Iquitos before arriving in Nauta, or plan meals aboard your cruise ship (included for most luxury river cruises). If you do try street food, stick to cooked items and bottled water.

Shopping

Shopping in Nauta is not worth your time. There are no souvenir shops, markets, or retail beyond basic provisions (drinks, snacks). Any craft or souvenir shopping should be done in Iquitos before traveling to Nauta. Iquitos has markets and tourist shops selling local art, textiles, and Amazon-themed items at reasonable prices.

Money & Currency

Currency
Peruvian Sol (PEN)
USD Accepted?
Yes
Card Payments
Limited. Visa/Mastercard rarely accepted in Nauta. Use in Iquitos only.
ATMs
No ATMs in Nauta. Withdraw cash in Iquitos or larger cities before arrival. Bring sufficient USD as backup.
Tipping
Not customary in Nauta. Tip in USD if using a private guide or driver (10–15% of service).
Notes
Carry cash (USD and PEN). Credit cards are useless in Nauta. Exchange rates are poor in small towns; exchange in Iquitos.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
June–September (dry season; lower river levels, fewer insects, clear skies)
Avoid
December–May (rainy season; high water, frequent downpours, insects peak)
Temperature
Warm year-round (75–90°F / 24–32°C); humidity is always high
Notes
Dry season is best for comfort and wildlife spotting. Rainy season brings higher water (better for some river exploration) but oppressive humidity and insects. Pack light, moisture-wicking clothes, insect repellent, and a rain jacket year-round.

Airport Information

Airport
Francisco Secada Vignetta International Airport (Iquitos, IQT)
Distance
Approximately 160 km (2.5 hours by car from Nauta)
Getting there
Arrange airport transfer through your cruise line or book a private car ($50–120 USD). Taxis are available but unreliable; avoid solo travel at night.
Notes
Most cruisers fly into Iquitos, spend a night or two there, then transfer to Nauta for embarkation. This is standard practice and recommended.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Book your hotel in Iquitos, not Nauta. Arrive 1–2 days early to explore the city, adjust to the climate, and avoid embarkation day stress.
  • Arrange all ground transfers through your cruise line. Do not attempt to hire taxis or organize your own transfer to Nauta; roads are remote and infrastructure is poor.
  • Withdraw cash (USD and Soles) in Iquitos before traveling to Nauta. There are no ATMs or card facilities in Nauta.
  • Buy insect repellent and sunscreen in Iquitos or bring from home. Nauta has no pharmacies or tourist shops.
