Nauta is a small, remote settlement on Peru's Ucayali River, approximately 140 km south of Iquitos. It serves primarily as an embarkation and disembarkation point for luxury Amazon river cruises (Uniworld, AmaWaterways, Lindblad, Explora Journeys), not as a cruise port for day tourism or shore excursions. Ships anchor in the river, and passengers board via tender.
The town itself is undeveloped, with minimal tourist infrastructure, shops, or restaurants. There is no traditional port terminal. Most cruisers either embark directly from Iquitos (2 hours by car) or stay overnight in Iquitos before transfer to Nauta. Going ashore in Nauta town is not recommended; the real experience begins once you board your river cruise.
Nauta itself is quiet and not known for serious crime, but it is extremely isolated with minimal police presence. The real concern is logistics: visitors should not venture into the surrounding jungle without a licensed guide, and infrastructure for independent travelers is essentially non-existent. Iquitos, 2 hours away, is larger and safer for pre-cruise stays, though standard urban caution applies (avoid night walks, keep valuables secure). The Amazon region carries inherent risks of insect-borne illness (dengue, malaria); consult a travel clinic before arrival and bring insect repellent.
Nauta is not wheelchair accessible. The town has unpaved streets, and the dock area involves boarding tenders from small boats, which can be uneven and slippery. Passengers with mobility issues should contact their cruise line well in advance to arrange special assistance. Iquitos, while larger, also has challenging terrain and infrastructure. The river cruises themselves typically have elevators and accessible cabins; confirm details with your operator.
Upon arrival by car from Iquitos, you will pull up to a simple dock area with a few small buildings and a mooring for tenders. There is no traditional cruise terminal. Local vendors may offer snacks or drinks, but selection is minimal. The atmosphere is quiet and utilitarian. From the dock, you board a tender to your ship anchored in the river. The whole process—check-in, tender transfer, settling into your cabin—typically takes 1–2 hours.
Nauta is located on a river tributary, not the coast. There are no beaches. River-based activities (canoe rides, swimming in designated areas) are included in cruise itineraries but require staying on your ship or joining organized lodge excursions.
Nauta has virtually no restaurants or commercial food service. Your options are a handful of basic shops selling packaged snacks, or arranging meals through your hotel if you stay overnight. Food quality and hygiene standards are uncertain. Eat in Iquitos before arriving in Nauta, or plan meals aboard your cruise ship (included for most luxury river cruises). If you do try street food, stick to cooked items and bottled water.
Shopping in Nauta is not worth your time. There are no souvenir shops, markets, or retail beyond basic provisions (drinks, snacks). Any craft or souvenir shopping should be done in Iquitos before traveling to Nauta. Iquitos has markets and tourist shops selling local art, textiles, and Amazon-themed items at reasonable prices.
Most cruise lines arrange car transfer from Iquitos airport or hotels to Nauta dock. Book with your cruise operator or hotel.

No. Nauta is just the dock; there are no attractions, restaurants, or shops. Go straight from your car to the tender. Spend your time in Iquitos instead if arriving early.
There are no hotels or tourism facilities in Nauta. Stay in Iquitos (2 hours away) and arrange a transfer to the dock on embarkation day. Your cruise line can help coordinate this.
Book a transfer through your cruise line (usually $50–120 USD), or arrange with your Iquitos hotel. The drive takes 2–2.5 hours. Do not attempt a solo taxi journey on unfamiliar roads.
