Nice is one of the better Mediterranean port calls for doing things on your own. The city is attractive, compact enough to handle in one day, and packed with obvious wins: the Promenade des Anglais, Vieux Nice, Cours Saleya, and the view from Castle Hill. You do not need an expensive excursion to have a good day here.

Is It Safe?

Nice is generally straightforward for cruise visitors, but it is still a busy city. The real issues are pickpockets, bag snatching around crowded streets and transport, and basic tourist distraction scams. Keep your phone put away when crossing roads or boarding trams, and do not leave bags hanging off café chairs.

Accessibility & Walkability

Central Nice is better than many older Mediterranean ports for travelers with limited mobility. The promenade is broad and fairly flat, and much of the newer city grid is manageable. Old Town has narrower lanes and more uneven surfaces, but it is still possible to enjoy parts of it without doing a long or difficult walk.

Outside the Terminal

Expect a functional port arrival, not a pretty one. The first few minutes are about transport, traffic, shuttle queues, and figuring out exactly where your ship has dropped you in relation to central Nice.

Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) is the only major airport serving this port and is 7 km from the cruise terminal. The tram is the cheapest and most reliable option if you have carry-on or standard luggage — buy a ticket from the machine at the airport tram stop. Taxis are metered and generally reliable but significantly more expensive.
