Ships anchor in Hanavave Bay; tender boats required to reach shore.

Most cruisers think of French Polynesia and immediately picture Bora Bora’s turquoise lagoons and overwater bungalows — but Nuku Hiva is something entirely different. This raw, volcanic island in the Marquesas archipelago is a place of dramatic cliffs, ancient stone tikis, and valleys so green they barely seem real. If you’re arriving here on a cruise, prepare yourself for one of the most genuinely untouched port experiences in the entire Pacific.

Arriving by Ship

Nuku Hiva doesn’t have a traditional cruise terminal. Your ship will anchor in Taiohae Bay, a sweeping natural harbour ringed by steep, jungle-draped mountains that drop almost vertically into the sea. Tenders ferry passengers ashore to the small town of Taiohae, which serves as the island’s main settlement. The moment you step onto the dock, you’ll notice something rare: there are no resort chains, no tourist trams, no duty-free perfume shops. Just locals going about their lives on one of the most remote inhabited islands on Earth. The dramatic scenery greeting you from the tender alone is worth the journey.

Things to Do

Nuku Hiva rewards the curious and the adventurous. The island’s archaeological sites are among the most significant in all of Polynesia — the Tohua Koueva ceremonial platform near Taiohae features enormous stone tikis that date back centuries, and walking among them without crowds is genuinely moving. Further afield, the Taipivai Valley (where Herman Melville famously lived among the islanders in 1842, later fictionalised in his novel Typee) offers a lush, atmospheric hike through history.

For something more active, the surrounding waters are spectacular. The underwater topography here is dramatic, with steep drop-offs and rich marine life including manta rays, hammerhead sharks, and enormous moray eels. The Aqua Safari Introductory Helmet Dive is a brilliant option if you’ve never dived before — you walk along the seafloor wearing a special helmet while fish swim curiously around you. 🎟 Book: Aqua Safari Introductory Helmet Dive (Underwater Walk) If you’re already certified, the diving around Nuku Hiva is the kind that serious divers travel thousands of miles to experience.

On land, arranging a 4WD excursion to the Hakaui Valley and the Vaipo Waterfall — one of the tallest in the world — is an absolute highlight. The drive alone, winding through cloud forest and over ridge lines with ocean views on both sides, is unforgettable.

Local Food

Marquesan cuisine is simpler and earthier than what you’ll find in Tahiti, and it’s deeply satisfying. Look out for poisson cru (raw fish marinated in lime juice and coconut milk), which appears in some form at nearly every meal. Goat is also common here, often slow-roasted or cooked in an ahima’a — a traditional underground oven using heated stones — which gives the meat a deep, smoky flavour you won’t easily forget.

In Taiohae, a handful of small restaurants and snack bars cluster near the waterfront. Don’t expect menus in English or laminated tourist-friendly photos — part of the charm is pointing, smiling, and trusting whatever comes out of the kitchen. Fresh fruit is exceptional; breadfruit, papaya, and star fruit are all grown locally and sold at tiny roadside stalls for almost nothing.

Shopping

Nuku Hiva is genuinely one of the best places in French Polynesia to buy authentic Polynesian art, and for a very good reason: the carving tradition here is still very much alive. Marquesan woodcarving is recognised across the Pacific for its bold, intricate geometric patterns, and you can find pieces made by local artisans in Taiohae’s small market and craft workshops. Look for bowls, ceremonial figurines, and jewellery made from bone, shell, and local hardwoods.

Tapa cloth — made from beaten bark and decorated with traditional motifs — is another purchase worth considering. Pieces vary wildly in size and quality, so take your time. Unlike souvenir shops elsewhere, you’re often buying directly from the maker, which means you can hear the story behind what you’re taking home.

Practical Tips

Taiohae is small and very walkable, but venturing beyond the town requires transport — taxis and local guides are available near the dock, and it’s worth booking an island excursion in advance if you want to cover the main archaeological sites. The island operates largely on French Polynesian franc (XPF), and card payments are not widely accepted outside a few shops and the post office. Bring cash. The heat and humidity can be intense, so pack reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle. French is the official language, though many locals also speak Marquesan — a few words of French go a long way in earning a warm welcome.

Nuku Hiva is the kind of port that stays with you long after your ship has sailed. It doesn’t offer luxury or convenience — it offers something rarer: a glimpse of a culture and landscape that feels genuinely unchanged by the modern world.
