Nuku Hiva is genuinely one of the best places in French Polynesia to buy authentic Polynesian art, and for a very good reason: the carving tradition here is still very much alive. Marquesan woodcarving is recognised across the Pacific for its bold, intricate geometric patterns, and you can find pieces made by local artisans in Taiohae’s small market and craft workshops. Look for bowls, ceremonial figurines, and jewellery made from bone, shell, and local hardwoods.
Tapa cloth — made from beaten bark and decorated with traditional motifs — is another purchase worth considering. Pieces vary wildly in size and quality, so take your time. Unlike souvenir shops elsewhere, you’re often buying directly from the maker, which means you can hear the story behind what you’re taking home.
Practical Tips
Taiohae is small and very walkable, but venturing beyond the town requires transport — taxis and local guides are available near the dock, and it’s worth booking an island excursion in advance if you want to cover the main archaeological sites. The island operates largely on French Polynesian franc (XPF), and card payments are not widely accepted outside a few shops and the post office. Bring cash. The heat and humidity can be intense, so pack reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle. French is the official language, though many locals also speak Marquesan — a few words of French go a long way in earning a warm welcome.
