That history gives Orsova an unusual poignancy if you take time to learn about it, but the current town is a functional small Romanian city without grand architecture or a buzzing tourist scene.

Most river cruise lines use Orsova as a scenic sailing point — the gorge views from the ship are genuinely spectacular — while also offering a brief shore excursion or free time ashore.
