Colonial architecture, small-town charm, quiet beaches, scenic beauty

Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Arrive early, tender ashore, walk the colonial core for 60–90 minutes, swim at Praia do Pontal, eat lunch, return to ship by mid-afternoon.
Best Beach
Praia do Pontal (closest, 10-min walk from dock) or Praia Grande (20 min, more space). Both are small, calm, and non-touristy.
With Kids
Walk the old town, grab ice cream, paddle in Praia do Pontal, skip major hikes due to heat and terrain.
Only 3-4 Hours
Take an early tender, walk the old-town cobblestone streets and church plaza (free, 90 min), eat lunch at a waterfront café, then catch a late-afternoon tender back.
Cheapest Option
Dock, self-guided walk through town (free), beach swim (free), local empanada or juice stand ($2–5 USD). Total: under $10 USD per person.
What To Avoid
Do not plan multi-hour jungle treks or boat tours on short calls—tender queues often consume 45+ minutes each way. Avoid rushing to Paraty town proper (15+ km inland) on a 4-hour port day.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Port Overview

Paraty is a small colonial village anchored in a sheltered bay about 140 km south of Rio de Janeiro. Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to a small municipal dock at the edge of the old town. The appeal is simplicity: a picturesque 18th-century Portuguese settlement, a handful of quiet beaches, and limited tourism infrastructure. Most cruisers spend 4–6 hours ashore.

This is not a major shopping or resort destination. It is a place to walk, soak in colonial charm, swim in a calm bay, and eat simple local food. Tender logistics matter here—plan for 30–45 minutes each way, which reduces effective shore time. If you only have 4 hours, you must prioritize ruthlessly.

Paraty works best as a scenic stop and a contrast to busier cruise ports. It does not offer restaurants, nightlife, or activities outside the old-town core and immediate beaches.

Is It Safe?

Paraty is a low-crime, welcoming destination for cruisers. The old town and beaches are safe during daylight. Street lighting is minimal and uneven; avoid solo walks after dusk. Do not leave valuables unattended on beaches. The dock area is secure and staffed. Petty theft is extremely rare but possible in very crowded markets (none here). Water quality is good; no known health warnings. Overall, safer than most Caribbean or Central American ports.

Accessibility & Walkability

The old town is not wheelchair-friendly. Streets are steep, cobblestone, and unpaved in places. The dock itself is flat and accessible, but every beach and main attraction requires stairs or rough terrain. Accessible toilets are few. If mobility is limited, plan to stay near the dock, eat at waterfront cafés, and skip inland walking.

Outside the Terminal

The dock is a small, open-air municipal pier with minimal shelter and a few local vendors selling drinks, snacks, and simple souvenirs. Beyond the dock, you immediately enter the old town's narrow cobblestone streets, lined with low colonial buildings painted in pastels. No large shops, queues, or aggressive vendors. It feels quiet and authentic, sometimes eerily quiet in the afternoon. The air is humid and warm year-round.

Local Food & Drink

Paraty's food scene is simple and affordable. Waterfront cafés and small restaurants near the dock serve fresh fish, shrimp, rice and beans, empanadas, and tropical fruit juices. Expect to pay $4–10 USD for a main course, $1–3 USD for juice or a snack. No high-end dining or international cuisine. Ceviche, grilled fish, and peixe na brasa (grilled whole fish) are standard. Cafés do not take reservations; just walk in. Local cachaça (sugarcane spirit) and cold beer are widely available. Tap water is safe.

Shopping

Shopping is minimal. A few small souvenir shops sell local crafts, postcards, and t-shirts near the dock and in the old town. Prices are low ($1–15 USD). There are no supermarkets, pharmacies, or major retailers within walking distance of the dock. If you need sunscreen, medications, or supplies, bring them from the ship. Haggling is not common.

Money & Currency

Yes
Card Payments

Tipping
Not expected but appreciated. 10% for table service at restaurants is customary if you feel inclined. No tipping at casual snack stands.
Notes
Bring USD or BRL cash. Exchange rates at the dock are poor; use ATMs or exchange at your ship.

Temperature
20–28°C (68–82°F) April–October; 25–32°C (77–90°F) November–March

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Arrive on the first tender if possible. Return queues build mid-afternoon, consuming 45+ minutes of your shore time.
  • Wear water shoes or sandals with grip; cobblestones and coastal paths are slippery when wet and uneven.
  • Bring cash (USD or BRL); ATMs are scarce and unreliable. Most beach vendors and small cafés do not take cards.
  • Skip any plan to drive 15 km inland to Paraty town proper on a 4-hour port day. Stick to the dock area, old town, and nearby beaches.
