Quick Facts: Paxos Island (Ξ Ξ±ΞΎΞΏΞ―) | Greece | No dedicated cruise terminal β tender port at Gaios Harbour | Tender | Gaios village center is steps from the tender dock | UTC+3 (EEST in summer)
Paxos is one of the smallest and most beautiful islands in the Ionian Sea, sitting just 13 nautical miles south of Corfu β and almost every ship that calls here tenders you directly into the postcard-perfect harbor of Gaios. The single most important planning tip: tender queues back up fast, so get your tender ticket the moment the announcement is made, especially if you’re traveling independently.

Port & Terminal Information
There is no formal cruise terminal on Paxos. Ships anchor offshore and run tender boats into Gaios Harbour, the island’s main port, where you step off onto the central quay alongside local fishing boats and the odd superyacht. Check your arrival point on Google Maps before your sailing day.
- Tender timing: Factor at least 20β30 minutes each way for the tender ride, plus any queue time. Budget accordingly.
- Facilities dockside: Minimal. There’s no ATM on the quay itself β the nearest cash machine is a 3-minute walk into Gaios village. No luggage storage, no tourist info booth at the dock, no Wi-Fi.
- Tourist info: A small information kiosk sometimes operates seasonally near the main square in Gaios; don’t rely on it. Most taverna owners are your best local resource.
- Gaios village center is effectively at the tender landing β you’re already there the moment you step ashore.

Getting to the City

On Foot β Gaios is immediately walkable from the tender dock. The main square, waterfront tavernas, and shops are within a 2-minute walk. The village is small enough to cover completely on foot in under an hour.
Bus β Paxos has a skeletal local bus service connecting Gaios, Loggos, and Lakka roughly 3β4 times daily in summer. The fare is around β¬2β3 each way. Schedules are not always reliable β check at the Gaios taxi rank or ask your ship’s shore excursions desk for the day’s timetable.
Taxi β Taxis wait near the main square in Gaios. Gaios to Lakka (the island’s northern village) runs approximately β¬12β15; Gaios to Loggos is around β¬8β10. Agree the fare before you get in β meters are rarely used. There are only a handful of taxis on the island, so book your return pickup by asking the driver directly.
Hop-On Hop-Off β Not available on Paxos.
Rental Car/Scooter β Highly practical here. Several hire outfits operate near Gaios harbor; scooters run β¬25β35/day, small cars β¬40β60/day. Paxos has just one main road running northβsouth, so navigation is genuinely easy. This is the best way to see Lakka, Loggos, and the olive groves at your own pace.
Ship Shore Excursion β Worth considering for the Antipaxos boat trip specifically, since organizing a private boat from Gaios can sell out by mid-morning in peak season. For simply exploring Paxos itself, going independently saves money and time.

What to Eat & Drink

Paxos food is honest Ionian Greek cooking β local olive oil is the foundation of almost everything, the seafood is caught the same morning, and portions are generous without being showy. Don’t leave without trying the local Paxiot olive oil in some form; it’s among the finest in Greece.
- Grilled octopus β Dried and charred on a waterfront grill; Gaios waterfront tavernas; β¬8β12
- Bourdeto β Spicy Corfiot-style fish stew, also common on Paxos; tavernas in Loggos; β¬14β18
- Fresh grilled sea bream (tsipoura) β Ordered by weight; ask the price before ordering; β¬18β25
- Sofrito β Veal in white wine and garlic sauce, another Ionian specialty; Gaios tavernas; β¬14β16
- Local Paxiot olive oil β Buy a bottle to taste and take home; shops along Gaios waterfront; β¬8β15
- Ouzo with meze β Order a carafe with a small plate of olives and cheese at any kafeneion; β¬4β7

Shopping
The main shopping strip runs along the Gaios waterfront and the two or three lanes immediately behind it. The best things to buy are local: small-batch Paxiot extra virgin olive oil (look for producers selling directly, not just supermarket brands), olive wood products (bowls, utensils β genuinely made locally), and local honey. Ceramic shops are plentiful but much of it is mass-produced and identical to every other Greek island β skip unless something genuinely catches your eye.
Avoid buying branded “Greek” goods (evil eye jewelry, blue-and-white tourist tat) in the dock-front stalls β the same items cost half the price in Corfu or Athens. Prices on Paxos carry a small island premium; budget accordingly and don’t be shy about politely negotiating at smaller shops.
