The port is primarily used for cruise embarkation and disembarkation, especially by Princess and Carnival, but it also handles day calls. Most worthwhile activities—beaches, restaurants, city walks—are in or near Wollongong proper, requiring a short taxi, bus, or rideshare ride. If you have only a few hours, transport logistics eat up time; if you're embarking or disembarking, allow extra time to clear the terminal. The port is safe and straightforward, but not a destination in itself; think of it as a gateway to the Illawarra coast region.

Port Kembla and Wollongong are safe and welcoming. The port terminal and industrial area are secure, and police presence is regular. Wollongong city center and beaches are tourist-friendly with standard city precautions (avoid carrying large amounts of cash, be aware of surroundings at night, secure valuables in taxis). Port Kembla terminal has level access and accessible facilities (toilets, elevators where applicable). Wollongong city center has accessible footpaths and many shops/cafes are ground-floor or ramped. Outside the Terminal

Exiting the terminal, you'll see a functional, modern cruise facility with car parks and shuttle bus areas. The immediate surroundings are industrial: shipping containers, warehouses, and working port infrastructure. No shops, cafes, or attractions are visible from the terminal. The waterfront is industrial port, not scenic. You must use transport or walk 30–40 minutes to reach any appealing area. This is purely a logistics zone; treat it as a point of departure, not a destination.

Shopping

Port Kembla terminal may have a small shop or cafe, but selection is limited. Duty-free shopping is not a feature here.
