Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Book the ferry in advance at Church Bay, walk to Rue Point or the seabird reserve, and spend an hour in a local pub. This captures Rathlin's appeal: isolation, nature, and genuine local life.
Best Beach
Not applicable. Rathlin has rocky coves and shingle; no sandy beach. Visit for cliffs, seabirds, and coastal scenery instead.
With Kids
Older kids (8+) will enjoy the ferry crossing and easy cliff walks. Younger children may struggle with rough crossing and lack of facilities. Pack snacks and waterproofs.
Only 3-4 Hours
Take tender ashore (30–40 min round-trip wait), catch the ferry to Rathlin (20 min crossing), walk the eastern cliffs toward Rue Point, return to ferry. Grab tea at St. Cuthbert's or a pub if time allows.
Cheapest Option
Ferry fare ~£10–12 GBP return. Walk the island on your own (free). Grab a packed lunch from Church Bay shop or a pub. Total ~£12–18 GBP per person.
What To Avoid
Do not expect restaurants, shops beyond a tiny post office, or tourist infrastructure. Rainy/windy weather can close ferries or make walks unpleasant. Do not skip waterproofs.

Top Things To Do

1

Rue Point Cliffs & Seabird Walk

Hike east from Church Bay to Rue Point (also called East Lighthouse Point), where 300-foot sea cliffs offer views of seabird colonies (razorbills, guillemots, kittiwakes, puffins April–August). Path is moorland and can be muddy; reward is dramatic isolation and wildlife. Allow 90 min return; most rewarding walk on the island.

2

Island Loop & West Light

Less crowded route west from Church Bay to the West Light and Kebble farm ruins (5–6 km, 2–2.5 hrs return). Moorland and coastal views, quieter than the Rue Point trail. Weather exposed; go only if conditions are clear.

2–2.5 hours FreeFree
3

Church Bay Pubs & Local Atmosphere

Rathlin has one or two traditional Irish pubs serving simple fare (stew, fish, sandwiches, local ales). St. Cuthbert's and the Manor House are typical. This is genuinely local: no tourist pretense. Grab lunch, chat with islanders, and absorb the remoteness. Meals £8–14 GBP.

4

Rathlin Island History & Ruins

Island has medieval ruins (including a castle ruin on the eastern headland) and historical significance (Viking raids, monastic settlement). There is no museum; ruins are scattered and often off-trail. Only pursue if you are a history enthusiast with a good map and time to explore on your own.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Quick Take

Port Type
Remote island expedition stop.
Best For
Nature lovers, hikers, quiet explorers, seabird watchers, photographers. Not for shopping, crowds, or structured attractions.
Avoid If
You want guaranteed comfort, multiple restaurants, shops, or activities. Seasickness-prone (ferry crossing can be rough).
Walkability
Island is walkable but hilly and rural. One settlement (Church Bay) is tiny. Plan for 30–60 min walks on quiet roads.
Budget Fit
Low cost. Ferry is pre-booked. Pub meals £8–14 GBP. No entrance fees. Bring cash.
Good For Short Calls?
Realistic. Tender + ferry + island time = 4–5 hours net. Consider full day if you book a longer island tour.

Port Overview

Rathlin Island is a 5.5 square-mile remote island off the north Antrim coast, reachable only by ferry from Ballycastle. Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers ashore to Church Bay (the only settlement), where a small car ferry runs to the island proper. There are no hotels, restaurants beyond one or two pubs, or commercial attractions. Rathlin appeals almost entirely to independent walkers, nature photographers, and those seeking genuine remoteness. The island is known for dramatic sea cliffs, seabird colonies (razorbills, guillemots, puffins in season), and windswept moorland walks. A typical port day means tender + ferry + 2–3 hours ashore = realistic 4–5 net hours on the island. This is not a conventional cruise stop; it suits Saga, Hurtigruten, Ponant, and Lindblad passengers who value exploration over comfort.

Is It Safe?

Rathlin is very safe for crime; violent crime is unheard of. Main hazards are weather and terrain: cliffs are unguarded; do not approach edges in wind. Ferries can be cancelled in bad weather, stranding you or delaying return. Mobile signal exists but is unreliable. Weather changes rapidly; mist and wind are common. No medical facility on the island; serious injury requires coast guard evacuation. Come prepared with waterproofs, sturdy footwear, and a realistic assessment of your fitness for moorland walks.

Accessibility & Walkability

Island access is limited for wheelchair users or those with mobility issues. Tender boarding is via rope ladder or gangway (depends on sea state) and can be physically demanding. Ferry deck is accessible for wheelchairs with assistance. Island terrain is hilly, moorland, and unmade in places. No paved paths away from Church Bay. Facilities on the island are minimal. This port is not realistic for those with significant mobility constraints.

Outside the Terminal

You step ashore onto a small shale beach in Church Bay, a hamlet with a handful of houses, a post office shop, a pub or two, and the car ferry pier. There is no cruise terminal building, information booth, or formal port. The beach and immediate surrounds are quiet and very rural. From the beach it's a 5–10 min walk uphill to the ferry pier, passing a few cottages. The whole scene feels like a quiet Irish fishing village; you're genuinely away from cruise infrastructure.

Local Food & Drink

Rathlin has minimal dining. Church Bay has one or two pubs (St. Cuthbert's, the Manor House) serving traditional Irish fare: stew, fish, sandwiches, crisps. Meals run £8–14 GBP. No cafés, restaurants, or fine dining. Shops are limited to one small post office. Bring a packed lunch if you want a picnic or snack on the moors, or plan to eat at the pub. Alcohol is available; tea and coffee are standard. Food quality is honest home cooking, not gourmet.

Shopping

Rathlin has a tiny post office shop selling snacks, milk, newspapers, and tourist trinkets. No supermarkets, clothing stores, or souvenir shops. Do not expect to shop here. If you need anything beyond basics, bring it from the ship or the mainland (Ballycastle, 20 min ferry away, has shops).

Card Payments
Limited. Pubs may accept cards; no guarantee. ATM on island is not reliable.
ATMs
No working ATM on the island. Withdraw GBP before tendering ashore or at Church Bay pier if possible.
Tipping
Tipping is not customary in pubs but rounding up or leaving small change is appreciated.
Notes
Bring cash (GBP). Card payments are possible but not guaranteed. Ferries may accept both, but confirm with crew.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
May–September. July–August: seabirds and puffins active. June: longest daylight.
Avoid
October–March: short daylight, frequent gales, ferries often cancelled.
Temperature
Summer (June–August): 14–16°C (57–61°F). Always windy. Rain frequent. Frost rare but possible April–May and September.
Notes
Rathlin is exposed; weather can turn rapidly. Waterproofs and windproof layers are essential year-round. Mist and drizzle are common. Plan for wet conditions.

Airport Information

Airport
Belfast International Airport
Distance
~90 km (56 miles) south of Ballycastle; ferries from Rathlin to Ballycastle, then drive or coach south.
Getting there
Hire car, coach, or taxi from Ballycastle to Belfast (90 min–2 hours drive). Bus services exist but are infrequent.
Notes
Rathlin is served only by ferry from Ballycastle. Pre-cruise embarkation would require arriving in Belfast, collecting transport, and reaching Ballycastle (4–5 hours minimum). Post-cruise disembarkation is similarly complex. This port is not practical for pre- or post-cruise stays without advance planning.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Confirm tender and ferry times with crew before going ashore; bad weather can cancel ferries without notice, leaving you stranded or rushed to return.
  • Bring waterproof jacket, windproof layer, sturdy walking boots, and a map (phone GPS is unreliable). Moorland weather changes fast.
  • Withdraw GBP cash before tendering; ATMs on the island are unreliable, and card payments are not guaranteed.
  • Pack snacks and water for moorland walks; no shops or cafés away from Church Bay. One pub meal is realistic; two is cutting it close.
