Cruise ships usually dock at a pier rather than right inside the postcard core, so the first decision is transport. Most cruisers either use a shuttle, taxi, or public transport to save time, then explore independently on foot. If your stop is short, stay focused on central Riga instead of chasing distant sights.

This is also a good embarkation or pre-cruise city if your itinerary starts or ends here. Riga has enough restaurants, hotels, and walkable sightseeing to justify an extra night, and the airport is close enough to make logistics fairly easy.

Is It Safe?

Riga is generally straightforward for cruise visitors. The main issues are the normal city ones: pickpocketing in crowded areas, tourist-zone overcharging if you use random taxis, and watching your belongings in transport hubs and around the market.

Old Town is busy and easy to navigate in daylight. At night, cobbles, uneven pavement, and a few quieter side streets matter more than serious safety concerns for most visitors. Use normal city awareness, especially if you are carrying passports, cash, or cameras.

Accessibility & Walkability

Riga is manageable but not seamless. Old Town is attractive and compact, but the historic center has cobblestones, uneven paving, and some curbs that can make wheelchair travel or limited-mobility walking slower and more tiring.

Outside Old Town, central boulevards and some newer areas are easier. If mobility is limited, use a taxi or shuttle into the center and focus on a smaller zone rather than trying to cover Old Town, the market, and the Art Nouveau district all in one day.

Outside the Terminal

The area outside the terminal is functional rather than charming. Expect a working port feel first, not a scenic old-city arrival where you step straight into cafes and landmarks.

That means your first ten minutes matter. If there is a shuttle, it usually saves time. If not, decide quickly between taxi and public transport instead of trying to improvise a long walk into town.

Local Food & Drink

Riga is easy for a cruise day meal. Old Town has the tourist-heavy restaurant cluster, which is convenient but can be uneven on value. If you want better odds of a solid lunch, walk a little beyond the busiest squares or head toward the market area and central boulevards.

Local food tends to lean hearty rather than delicate: breads, smoked fish, potatoes, soups, pork, pastries, and seasonal ingredients. If you only want a quick taste of the city, a market snack and a coffee stop can be more satisfying than a full sit-down meal in the most obvious tourist lane.

Shopping

Shopping is decent but not a reason to choose Riga over its architecture and street atmosphere. Old Town has the usual souvenir shops, amber, knitwear, chocolates, and gift items, while the market gives you a more local and practical option.

If shopping is your main goal, keep expectations realistic. This is better for small Baltic souvenirs and food items than for major bargain hunting.
