Croatia
Modern cruise terminal with direct pedestrian access to the city center, located at Rijeka Port Authority's Terminal 1.
Croatia's most famous natural attraction — 16 terraced lakes connected by waterfalls, with vivid turquoise water and forested gorges. It's a genuinely extraordinary place. A long day trip from Rijeka but absolutely worth it if your port time allows.
A well-preserved hilltop fortress above the city offering panoramic views over the Kvarner Bay and Rijeka. Walk up via the 561-step Petar Kružić stairway or take a taxi. The grounds are open and uncrowded. Far better than it sounds.
Rijeka's main pedestrian street runs through the heart of the city, lined with Habsburg-era architecture, cafes, and the landmark City Tower. Walk the full length, stop for coffee, and soak in the everyday Croatian city atmosphere.
A lively covered and open-air market near the waterfront selling local cheeses, smoked meats, olives, and produce. One of the best places to taste and buy Croatian food products. Arrive in the morning for the best selection.
A short bus or taxi ride from Rijeka, Opatija is a former Austro-Hungarian resort town with elegant 19th-century villas, a scenic sea promenade (Lungomare), and a more polished feel than Rijeka. A good alternative if you want a resort atmosphere without a full excursion.

Rijeka is Croatia's largest port city and a working harbour — pragmatic and authentic rather than pretty or touristy. Ships dock at the city pier, close enough to walk into the center in under 10 minutes. This is not a polished resort stop like Dubrovnik. It's a real Croatian city with good food, a lived-in old quarter, and excellent transport connections to far better sights nearby.
The city's main draw for cruisers is its position as the best jumping-off point for Plitvice Lakes National Park — Croatia's crown jewel of natural scenery, reachable in about 2.5 to 3 hours by road. If Plitvice is in your plans anywhere in Croatia, Rijeka is actually a practical place to do it. Full-day organised tours depart directly from the port area.
For those staying closer to the ship, the Korzo pedestrian street, the covered market, and Trsat Castle offer a decent half-day. The city has a gritty, lived-in charm. Don't expect manicured cobblestones — but do expect good coffee, honest food, and very few tourist crowds compared to southern Croatia.
Rijeka is a safe city by any reasonable standard. Petty theft is rare but not unheard of in crowded market areas — keep your bag in front of you and don't leave valuables visible in taxis. The city centre is calm and well-lit. There are no significant scam operations targeting cruise passengers. Use normal city awareness and you'll have no issues.
The flat waterfront and Korzo promenade are reasonably wheelchair-accessible. Beyond that, Rijeka becomes hilly quickly — Trsat Castle involves steep staircases and is not accessible for mobility-impaired visitors. The covered market has some uneven surfaces. Plitvice Lakes has boardwalk routes that work for many visitors but the terrain varies; check the park's official accessibility map before booking if this is a concern.
The pier drops you directly into a working port zone. It's functional rather than welcoming — expect a short walk through a quayside area before the city opens up. Within 5-10 minutes of walking, you'll hit the main waterfront boulevard and can see Rijeka's characteristic yellow and terracotta buildings rising up the hillside. There's no large tourist market or welcome zone at the gate — just the city itself.
Pebble and concrete lido beaches along the Opatija coastline, best reached by local bus from Rijeka. Not Croatia's finest beaches — more scenic promenade than swim destination — but swimmable in summer and far better than anything Rijeka itself offers.
Rijeka is excellent value for food compared to most Adriatic ports. The local cuisine leans on Kvarner Bay seafood — fresh fish, scampi, and octopus salad are menu staples. A sit-down lunch with wine at a konoba (traditional Croatian restaurant) runs $15-25 USD per person. The market is the best spot for cheap, local snacks.
For a quick and memorable meal, look for restaurants within a few blocks of the covered market. Avoid the obvious tourist-facing spots on the main waterfront — walk one or two streets back for better food at lower prices. Local prosciutto, sheep's cheese, and bread from the market make for an excellent and cheap impromptu meal.
Coffee culture is strong here — Rijeka residents take their morning espresso seriously. Stop at any bar on the Korzo for a $1.50-2 espresso and a pastry. It's one of the genuine pleasures of the port.
Shopping is not a major draw at Rijeka. You'll find a few souvenir shops near the Korzo, but the better buy is food — local olive oil, prosciutto, Kvarner honey, and truffles from the market are quality products at fair prices. There's a decent commercial center for everyday goods if you need anything practical. Don't expect artisan boutiques or duty-free-style shopping.
The city center, Korzo promenade, market, and Cathedral of St. Vitus are all reachable on foot from the pier.
Taxis are available near the pier. Bolt and local apps work in Rijeka.
Check Uber fareCity buses connect Rijeka to Opatija and nearby towns. The main bus station is a short walk from the pier.
Book bus ticketsMinibus or coach tours depart from the city for Plitvice Lakes National Park. Book independently for better value than ship excursions.

Yes — the main pier is close enough to reach the Korzo promenade and city center in about 10 minutes on foot. The walk along the waterfront is straightforward and flat.
Yes, but only if you have a full port day of at least 10 hours. The drive is 2.5-3 hours each way, and you'll want 3-4 hours in the park itself. Book a guided tour with a guaranteed return time.
Honestly, Rijeka itself is a minor draw compared to Dubrovnik or Split. Its value is as a gateway to Plitvice or Opatija. If you've done both, a relaxed city wander and good lunch ashore is still better than staying on the ship.
Croatia uses the Euro since January 2023. US dollars are not accepted. Cards work widely, but bring some cash for the market and smaller cafes.
Trsat Castle is the best family option — kids enjoy the fortress, the stairway climb, and the hilltop views. Plitvice Lakes is also family-friendly with its boardwalk trails over the waterfalls.
