Most ships dock directly at the Mahogany Bay cruise terminal on the southern coast of Roatan, operated by Carnival Corporation, though some larger itineraries may use the nearby Coxen Hole port facility.

Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
For most people, West Bay Beach is the best use of a Roatan port day. You get the island's strongest beach experience without wasting time trying to do too much.

Best Beach
West Bay Beach is the best overall beach for most cruisers: clear water, good sand, easy rentals and food, but it gets busy.
Book West Bay Beach on Viator
With Kids
Daniel Johnson's Monkey and Sloth Hang Out paired with a short beach stop works well for families because it is simple, memorable, and does not eat the whole day.
Book Daniel Johnson's Monkey and Sloth Hang Out on Viator
Only 3-4 Hours
Pick one zone only: from Mahogany Bay stay local and use the beach or one short island tour; from Coxen Hole go straight to West Bay Beach, stay 2-3 hours, then head back with buffer time.
Book West Bay Beach on Viator
Cheapest Option
Use the port area and a basic taxi plan instead of a packaged excursion. Mahogany Bay's own beach access can be the lowest-hassle option; for off-port plans, shared taxi plus a public beach setup is usually the cheapest route, check current rates.

What To Avoid
Do not combine West Bay, East End, and multiple animal parks in one day. Also do not assume all 'private beach' or beach-club offers at the pier are good value; many are just convenience sold at a premium.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Avoid If

Good For Short Calls?
Good for one focused plan, not for trying to see the whole island

Port Overview

Roatan is a straightforward cruise stop if you make one decision fast: beach day, snorkeling, wildlife stop, or scenic island tour. It is not a place where you casually walk off the ship and discover everything on foot. The good stuff is spread out, and traffic can be slow enough to matter.

Cruise ships usually dock at either Mahogany Bay or the Port of Roatan in Coxen Hole. Both terminals are built for cruise traffic, with shops, tour desks, taxis, and a fairly controlled exit. Mahogany Bay is the more self-contained setup, including its own beach area. Coxen Hole is closer to the island's working town feel, but still mostly functions as a launch point.

Most cruisers go ashore for West Bay Beach, snorkeling or diving, monkey-and-sloth stops, ziplining, or a basic island highlights tour. If you want culture, architecture, or a walkable old town, this is not really that port. If you want warm water and an easy Caribbean day, it works well.

Is It Safe?

Roatan is manageable for cruise visitors if you use normal Caribbean port common sense. Stay with established taxis, guides, beach operations, and known excursion areas. Petty theft can happen, especially if you leave phones or bags unattended on the beach.

The bigger practical issue is not dramatic crime; it is poor planning. Traffic, uneven roads, and casual timing can make people late. Build in return time, avoid flashing valuables, and be cautious with alcohol if you still need a long ride back to the ship.

At the beach, watch your belongings and ask clearly what is included before sitting down or renting gear. Some vendors are friendly but persistent, and misunderstandings over chairs, umbrellas, or transport are common if you do not pin down the price upfront.

Accessibility & Walkability

Inside both major cruise terminals, surfaces are generally easier and more manageable than outside. Shops, paved walkways, and basic facilities are available, especially at Mahogany Bay. That said, Roatan overall is not an especially easy port for wheelchair users unless you book carefully.

The island's main attractions usually require vehicle transport, and many beaches have sand access, uneven paths, docks, or steps. If accessibility matters, a ship excursion or pre-arranged accessible transport is the safer move than improvising at the pier.

Outside the Terminal

The first few minutes ashore feel heavily cruise-oriented. Expect shops, signs, excursion sellers, taxi dispatch, and a clear funnel toward transport or the terminal shopping zone rather than a natural town-center experience.

If you dock at Mahogany Bay, the port area is polished and self-contained, almost like a controlled resort village. Coxen Hole feels a bit more local once you get outside the immediate terminal area, but it is still mainly a transport hub for getting elsewhere on the island.

Beaches Near the Port

West Bay Beach

Best overall beach on the island for cruise visitors: good water color, solid swimming, easy services, and plenty of transport. Busy on ship days, but still the safest recommendation for most people.

Distance
About 25-40 minutes by taxi
Cost
check current rates
Best for
Classic beach day, swimming, snorkeling

Mahogany Bay Beach

Convenient beach option for ships docking at Mahogany Bay. More about ease than authenticity, but that can be exactly the right call on a short stop.

Distance
Inside the Mahogany Bay port area
Cost
check current rates
Best for
Low-hassle half days, families, short calls

West End waterfront areas

Not the top sandy beach recommendation, but worth considering if you want a looser village feel with food and water access rather than a full beach-club setup.

Distance
About 20-35 minutes by taxi
Cost
Free to explore; extras cost more
Best for
Lunch, casual wandering, mixed beach and village time

Local Food & Drink

Roatan is better for simple beach lunches and seafood than for destination dining. At West Bay and West End you will find plenty of grilled fish, conch, baleadas, fried chicken, burgers, and cold drinks. Quality ranges from solid to forgettable, so pick busy places with posted menus and clear pricing.

Inside the cruise terminals, food is easy but more generic and often priced for convenience. If you care more about relaxing than hunting for the perfect meal, eat where you are and move on. If you want a more local bite, ask a trusted driver for a straightforward spot rather than gambling randomly near the pier.

Shopping

Shopping is easy but not a reason to visit Roatan on its own. Both cruise port areas push the usual mix of souvenirs, T-shirts, carvings, local crafts, coffee, and jewelry. West End has a more casual, independent feel if you want to browse outside the terminal bubble.

As always, check quality before buying anything expensive. The port shops are fine for easy gifts, but this is not a place where most cruisers find truly exceptional shopping.

Money & Currency

Currency
Honduran lempira
USD Accepted?
Yes
Card Payments
Cards are accepted in many cruise-area businesses, beach venues, and established tour operators, but cash is still useful.
ATMs
ATMs are available in or near main port and town areas, though using ship or bank-side options is usually safer than random machines.
Tipping
Small tips are appreciated for drivers, guides, beach servers, and porters.
Notes
Carry small USD bills for taxis, tips, and quick purchases. Confirm whether quoted prices are in USD or lempira.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
January – April
Avoid
September – October
Temperature
About 77-88°F / 25-31°C
Notes
Roatan is warm year-round, but rain and rougher weather can disrupt beach and boat plans in the wetter months.

Airport Information

Airport
Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport
Distance
About 3-5 km from Coxen Hole port area; farther from Mahogany Bay depending on route
Getting there
Taxi and pre-arranged transfers
Notes
Useful mainly for land stays, not especially relevant for most same-day cruise calls.

Getting Around from the Port

Taxi

The standard way to get around from both cruise terminals. Drivers often quote by vehicle, not per person, so confirm the full fare and whether it is round trip before leaving.

Time: West Bay is often about 25-40 minutes depending on terminal and traffic
Book a transfer 5% off with code TPO5 at checkout
Shared taxi or shuttle

Common for popular beach routes and simple excursion corridors. Cheaper than a private taxi if available, but less flexible.

Time: Varies by waiting time and number of stops
Book a transfer 5% off with code TPO5 at checkout
Ship excursion

The safest choice if you are worried about timing, traffic, or language barriers. Usually the easiest option for snorkeling, beach transfers, and wildlife parks.

Time: Usually half-day to full-day
Walking

Fine inside the port compounds, not very useful for the main island highlights. Roads outside the terminals are not built for scenic strolling.

Cost: Free Time: Port area only

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Choose one main plan before you leave the ship; Roatan is not a good port for improvising three different things.
  • If you are going to West Bay, leave early and build return buffer time because traffic can be slow for a small island.
  • Confirm taxi fares before getting in, including whether the quote is per person or for the whole vehicle.
  • Bring small cash for tips, chairs, snacks, and simple transport payments.
  • If a beach seller or tour rep is vague about what is included, assume it is not included until stated clearly.
  • Mahogany Bay's own beach is worth considering if your priority is easy and stress-free rather than best-on-island.
  • Use reef-safe sun protection and keep valuables minimal if you plan to swim or snorkel.
