Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Book the ship's curated snorkeling or island-hopping excursion; your cruise line vets guides, boats, and logistics in this remote area.
Best Beach
Small island beaches (Gigantes Islands, nearby islets) accessible by tender or boat tour; white sand, clear water, minimal development.
With Kids
Calm snorkeling or shallow-water island wading via tender excursion; ask your ship which islands have safe, family-friendly access.
Only 3-4 Hours
Take a guided snorkeling trip to nearby reefs or a quick island-hopping tender tour; stay close to the anchorage and return early.
Cheapest Option
Decline ship excursions and arrange a direct negotiation with local boat operators at the tender dock ($30–60 USD per person for basic island/snorkeling tour), though safety and quality vary.
What To Avoid
Do not expect a town, shops, or restaurants within walking distance. Avoid independent boat operators unless your ship or locals vouch for them.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Port Overview

Salomague is a very small anchorage in the Philippines (Panay region, near the Gigantes Islands) with no town infrastructure. Ships anchor offshore; tenders ferry passengers to nearby islands or small docks. This is strictly a nature and water-sports destination, not a cultural or shopping port. Nearly all cruisers participate in ship-organized snorkeling, island tours, or diving excursions. There is no independent exploration ashore; your options are tender-dependent.

Is It Safe?

Salomague itself is uninhabited and safe. The main risks are typical of remote anchorage travel: tender boat operation in varying sea conditions (especially June–November monsoon), and sun/heat exposure during water activities. Petty theft and serious crime are not common concerns in this area. Crocodiles exist in nearby mangroves but are not a practical risk for snorkelers staying in open water. Follow your ship's briefing on water safety, sun protection, and tender procedures. Do not venture inland or to unscheduled locations without a local guide.

Accessibility & Walkability

Not wheelchair-friendly. Tender access requires stairs, and island landings often involve shallow water wading or uneven terrain. If mobility is limited, discuss with your ship's accessibility team before the port call.

Outside the Terminal

There is no terminal building or town. You will arrive at a simple wooden dock or beach landing on an island. Expect basic infrastructure: possibly a small shelter, no shops, no restaurants, no ATMs. The landscape is tropical (palms, scrub, limestone rocks). Other cruisers from your ship will be present. This is purely a staging point for water activities.

Beaches Near the Port

Gigantes Islands white-sand beaches

Small, pristine island beaches with fine white sand, turquoise water, and no commercial development. Very shallow near shore, ideal for wading and swimming.

Distance
20–45 minutes by boat
Cost
$70–180 USD (ship tour) or $35–70 USD (independent boat)
Best for
Beach and photography lovers; families with small children (shallow water).

Island landing near anchorage

Smaller, closer islands used as tender stops. Often have basic beach access, shade, and a small cleared area. Less crowded than Gigantes.

Distance
5–15 minutes by tender
Cost
Tender only (included or $20–40 USD)
Best for
Quick beach time if you only have 2–3 hours; less strenuous than a full island tour.

Local Food & Drink

Salomague has no restaurants, shops, or food vendors. All meals are onboard your ship. If you participate in a long excursion, bring water and snacks from the ship. Some tour operators may provide a simple packed lunch or drinks; confirm with your ship when booking. Local fresh fruit (mango, coconut) may be available at the dock in limited quantities, but do not rely on it.

Shopping

There is no shopping at Salomague. No stores, stalls, or souvenir vendors. Any items (snacks, sunscreen, water) must come from your ship's shops or be purchased before you leave.

Money & Currency

Currency
Philippine Peso (PHP)
USD Accepted?
Yes
Card Payments
Extremely limited; no shops or services accept cards at the anchorage. Your ship accepts USD and card payments.

None at Salomague. Withdraw cash onboard or before you arrive if you plan to tip guides or pay independent operators.
Tipping
Tour guides and boat operators often expect tips (50–100 PHP or $1–2 USD per person is customary). Round up in USD if paying directly.
Notes
Bring USD cash in small bills if you plan to negotiate with independent boat operators or tip locally.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
November–April (dry season, calm seas, clear water).
Avoid
June–September (southwest monsoon: rough seas, cancelled tenders, poor visibility).
Temperature
28–31°C (82–88°F), very humid.
Notes
Water temperature is warm year-round (27–29°C / 81–84°F). Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard.

Airport Information

Airport
Roxas City Airport (RXS) or Caticlan Airport (MPH, closer)
Distance
~60–90 km by road
Getting there
Most cruisers arrive via cruise ship only. If arranging pre- or post-cruise hotel stays, ask your cruise line about transfer packages.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Book snorkeling or diving excursions through your ship, not independently, to ensure proper safety oversight and guide vetting in this remote area.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard, and plenty of water; there are no shops at the anchorage.
  • If you only have 3–4 hours, stick to nearby island beaches or a quick snorkel tour rather than chasing distant islands; tender time and boat rides eat into your window.
  • Confirm tender schedules with your ship the night before and monitor announcements; sea conditions can cause last-minute changes or cancellations.
