Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor, one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites on the planet. River cruise ships dock at or near the Tonle Sap Lake port of Kampong Khleang or Chong Khneas, with Siem Reap town sitting roughly 10-15 km inland. This is not a traditional ocean cruise port — it is a river and expedition cruise destination, typically visited on Mekong or Tonle Sap itineraries operated by lines such as Avalon Waterways, Viking River Cruises, and AmaWaterways.
The reason to come ashore is singular and unmistakable: Angkor. The temple complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and genuinely one of the wonders of the world. Even a half-day gives you enough time to see Angkor Wat itself and feel the scale of the place. Beyond the temples, Siem Reap town has a lively dining scene, a night market, and a growing café culture that punches above its weight.
Be realistic about the heat and distances. Cambodia is hot and humid for most of the cruise season, Angkor covers a huge area, and temple terrain involves uneven stones, steep staircases, and long walking stretches. If mobility is a concern, the main Angkor Wat courtyard is still accessible and rewarding without climbing. Budget your energy accordingly.
Siem Reap is generally safe for tourists and sees large numbers of international visitors daily. Petty theft is the main risk — keep bags zipped in busy market areas and watch your phone around Pub Street at night. Tuk-tuk scams are uncommon but overcharging is possible if you do not agree on a price before boarding.
At Angkor, be cautious of individuals posing as official guides near the gates — licensed guides wear official badges and are hired through proper channels. The temple ruins themselves have uneven surfaces, low-lit passages, and steep stairways. Wear closed shoes, not sandals, and watch your step.
Drinking tap water is not safe. Carry bottled water and drink frequently in the heat — dehydration is a genuine risk, especially if you are moving between temples under direct sun.
Siem Reap town center is mostly flat and walkable, but roads can be uneven and footpaths inconsistent. Tuk-tuks are not wheelchair accessible; private car hire is a better option for passengers with limited mobility. At Angkor Wat itself, the main causeway and ground-level galleries are accessible, but upper temple levels involve very steep original stone stairs with no modern handrails on some sections. Visitors who cannot climb can still see the exterior, moat, and ground-floor carvings, which are genuinely impressive on their own. Angkor Thom and the Bayon also have ground-level areas that reward a visit without any climbing.
If docking at Chong Khneas (the main Tonle Sap dock closest to Siem Reap), you will step into a busy waterfront area with tuk-tuks, drivers holding signs, and local vendors immediately. It can feel overwhelming for the first few minutes. Have your plan ready — know whether you are joining a ship excursion, hiring a tuk-tuk independently, or meeting a pre-arranged driver. Cruise lines typically brief passengers the evening before on logistics. If going independently, agree on a price immediately and confirm the driver knows the specific drop-off point (Angkor Wat main gate vs. Angkor Thom vs. town center).
Siem Reap has a strong food scene anchored in Khmer cuisine — expect fish amok (a coconut-curry steamed fish dish), lok lak (stir-fried beef), and fresh river fish prepared simply and well. The Old Market area has both street food stalls and sit-down restaurants at honest prices. A full meal with a drink runs $4-10 USD at most local spots.
Pub Street is fine for a quick lunch but increasingly caters to Western tastes with pizza and burgers. For a more authentic meal, walk one or two blocks back from the main strip and prices drop noticeably. Sugar Palm and Cuisine Wat Damnak are well-regarded local restaurants if you want something slightly above street-food level without paying resort prices.
Avoid eating at vendor stalls inside the Angkor complex itself unless you are desperate — quality is low and prices are inflated. Buy snacks and water in town before heading to the temples.
Siem Reap's Old Market is the best spot for souvenirs: silk scarves, lacquerware, stone carvings, and Khmer-style silver jewelry are all available. Quality varies widely — look for fixed-price shops if you dislike bargaining, or embrace negotiation at the market stalls. Artisans Angkor, a social enterprise with a showroom in town, sells high-quality crafts made by local artisans at fair fixed prices and is worth the stop if you want to buy something meaningful.
The night market runs daily and is convenient for a quick browse on the way back from dinner. Avoid buying antique-looking temple artifacts — many are fakes, and genuine antiquities cannot legally be exported from Cambodia.
Pub Street and Old Market Area (mid-range) — Central, walkable, and packed with restaurants, cafés, and markets — the liveliest area and most convenient for first-time visitors, about 12 km from Chong Khneas dock.
Wat Bo Village (budget) — Quieter residential neighborhood just east of the center with boutique guesthouses and good local restaurants, about 13 km from the dock.
Angkor Wat Road Corridor (luxury) — Luxury resort strip between town and the temples, ideal if you want easy early-morning temple access and full resort amenities, about 10-14 km from the dock.
| Budget | Mid-Range | Luxury |
|---|---|---|
| $20-50/night | $60-150/night | $200-500+/night |
💡 Pro Tip: Arriving a day early is strongly recommended — Angkor deserves more than a rushed port-day visit, and an overnight stay lets you catch sunrise at Angkor Wat, which is the single best experience the destination offers. Book accommodation in the Old Market area or Wat Bo for easy access to dining and transport.
Siem Reap is transitioning between two airports. The old REP airport closed to most commercial flights in late 2023; the new Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (SAI) is now the primary hub but is located 51 km from town — significantly increasing transfer time and cost. Confirm which airport your airline uses when booking and budget accordingly for the longer transfer from SAI.
🅿️ Port Parking: Not applicable — Siem Reap is a river cruise destination without a dedicated drive-in cruise terminal parking facility.
🚢 Terminal Tips: River cruise lines handle embarkation logistics from the Tonle Sap dock directly. Arrive in Siem Reap town at least one day before embarkation and confirm your ship's specific boarding location and shuttle arrangements with your cruise line in advance.
The default and best option for most cruisers. Drivers wait at the dock and in town and can take you to Angkor and back with waiting time included.
More comfortable in the heat, especially for groups or families. Your cruise line or hotel can arrange in advance.

No. Ships dock at Tonle Sap Lake ports such as Chong Khneas, which is about 10-15 km from Siem Reap town and 15-20 km from Angkor Wat. Transfers by tuk-tuk, van, or ship excursion bus are required.
One day is enough to see Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Ta Prohm at a reasonable pace. Half a day is enough to see Angkor Wat itself meaningfully. You cannot see the full archaeological park in a single port call.
A 1-day pass costs $37 USD and must be purchased at the official Angkor Enterprise ticket counter, not from vendors or guides. Cards and USD cash are accepted.
Yes, it is generally safe and significantly cheaper. Agree on a price and route before departure and ensure your driver knows when you need to be back at the dock.
Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter Angkor Wat — this is strictly enforced. Light breathable fabrics are best given the heat, and sturdy flat shoes are essential for uneven stone surfaces.
