Our picks in Tahaa
The lagoon is home to colorful coral gardens, tropical fish (parrotfish, wrasse, surgeonfish), rays, and occasionally reef sharks (harmless). Visibility is typically 40–80 feet in calm conditions. This is the premier activity.
Many lagoon tours include a stop on a private or semi-private motu for a traditional Polynesian lunch (grilled fish, tropical fruit, coconut) and free beach time. Calm, shallow water near motus is ideal for kids and nervous swimmers.
Guided boat trips focus on shallow coral zones and spots where stingrays and reef sharks congregate (always non-aggressive). Some tours include ray-feeding; others keep a respectful distance. Beautiful photo ops and high likelihood of spotting rays.

Tours that fit this port day →Tahaa is a small, lightly developed island in the Society Islands, typically visited as an anchorage by small-ship cruise lines (Paul Gauguin, Windstar, Regent, Seabourn, Silversea, Ponant, Oceania, Uniworld). The ship anchors offshore; tenders ferry passengers to the island or directly to excursion boats. There is no cruise terminal, no downtown, and almost no retail infrastructure on land.
The entire appeal is the lagoon: pristine turquoise water, coral reefs, tropical fish, and small motus (islets). This is a no-frills, water-first port. Nearly all cruisers either book an organized lagoon tour or take the tender to a beach and self-explore. Land-based tourism is minimal.
Tahaa is very safe for tourists. Petty theft is rare, and locals are welcoming. The main hazards are water-related: strong currents, razor-sharp coral cuts, and occasionally strong sun. Wear reef shoes at all times in the lagoon, apply reef-safe sunscreen, and heed guide warnings about currents. If swimming alone, inform someone on shore and avoid swimming far from the boat.
Tender boarding can be challenging in rough seas; if mobility is limited, check with the cruise line about gentle anchorages and tender conditions before port day. Once ashore, beaches and motus are typically flat and easy to navigate. There are no paved paths or infrastructure, so wheelchairs are impractical. The lagoon itself is accessible for snorkelers and swimmers of varied ability if you're cautious around coral.
There is no terminal. The tender dock or beach landing is a simple sandy or rocky area. Nearby you will see a handful of small local shops, a snack stand or two, and boat operators offering tours. It feels very laid-back and low-key—no crowds, no hustle. Most cruisers immediately board an excursion boat or wade into the lagoon.
Small sandy islet with calm, shallow lagoon water and excellent coral nearby. Often visited on organized tours but less crowded than popular main-island beaches.
Small public beaches near the tender dock; calm lagoon water, local food stands, and quick access. Less scenic than motus but no boat transfer needed.
Dining ashore is minimal and casual. Small local snack stands near the tender dock sell grilled fish, shrimp, coconut rice, and tropical fruit for $5–12 USD. Most organized lagoon tours include a motu lunch (grilled fish, salads, tropical fruit, coconut dessert). If you book independently, bring snacks or picnic items from the ship. There are no sit-down restaurants worth a special trip; the focus is on simple, fresh local fare eaten beachside.
Shopping is extremely limited. A handful of small souvenir shops near the tender landing sell locally made crafts, pearl jewelry, pareus (sarongs), and t-shirts. Prices are reasonable but selection is modest. Don't expect malls, duty-free stores, or a wide range of goods. Most cruisers skip shopping entirely here.
Ship-operated boats ferry passengers from the anchorage to a beach or motu landing; usually included in port cost or a small fee.
Booked through the cruise line or local operators; includes boat transport, snorkeling stops, and often a motu lunch or visit.
Small motorboat rental or private guide service arranged locally or ahead of time.

Planning a cruise here?
Windstar, Silversea Cruises sail to Tahaa.
Yes, the lagoon is generally very safe and calm. Watch for sharp coral, wear reef shoes, and be aware of strong sun. Reef sharks are present but non-aggressive and rarely seen by swimmers. Ask your guide about any currents or hazards on the day.
Yes. Take the tender to a beach or motu and snorkel independently, or rent gear from local stands. Organized tours are safer and more guided, but self-guided snorkeling is common and economical.
In rare rough seas, tender service may be suspended or delayed. The cruise line will announce this early and may offer a refund or compensation. Have a backup plan (book a tour through the ship) in case anchorage conditions deteriorate.
