Ships dock at the Tallinn Passenger Port (Old City Harbour), which has several terminals (A, B, C, and D) located approximately 800 metres to 1.5 km from the edge of the Old Town.

Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Spend most of your time in Tallinn Old Town and Toompea. It is the reason ships stop here, and it is absolutely worth the walk.
Best Beach
Not relevant for most cruise calls. Tallinn is a city-history stop, not a beach port.
With Kids
Do the Old Town walk, then add the Seaplane Harbour museum if your family likes ships, planes, and hands-on exhibits. It is one of the better kid-friendly options here.
Only 3-4 Hours
Walk from the pier to Viru Gate, loop through the Lower Old Town, climb to Toompea viewpoints, stop for coffee or pastries, then walk back. That gives you the best of Tallinn without overcomplicating the day.
Cheapest Option
Skip tours and walk into Old Town on your own. A self-guided city day with a café stop can stay fairly low-cost; local transit is available if you do not want to walk, check current rates.
What To Avoid
Do not waste a short call on distant malls or random suburbs. Also do not assume Old Town is flat — the cobbles and uphill sections are the only real catch.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Quick Take

Port Type
Walkable historic city port
Best For
Medieval Old Town, easy DIY sightseeing, viewpoints, cafés, half-day city walks
Avoid If
You want beaches, big-ticket attractions, or a cheap all-day taxi-heavy outing
Walkability
Good if you can handle 20-30 minutes to Old Town plus cobbles and hills inside the center
Budget Fit
Good for independent walkers; food and museums are manageable, but not bargain-basement cheap
Good For Short Calls?
Excellent — Tallinn works very well as a 3-5 hour self-guided port stop

Port Overview

Tallinn is one of the better Baltic cruise stops for independent exploring. Ships usually dock at a pier close enough that many passengers simply walk into the city, and that is the right move for most people. The headline attraction is the UNESCO-listed Old Town: compact, photogenic, easy to navigate, and packed with lanes, squares, towers, churches, and viewpoints.

Is It Safe?

Tallinn is generally one of the easier and safer European cruise ports to explore on your own. The main issues are ordinary tourist-city stuff: watch your bag in busy streets, cafés, and transport areas, and be alert around souvenir-heavy zones near the main gates and squares.

Accessibility & Walkability

This is a mixed port for accessibility. The dock area itself is manageable, but the main attraction — Old Town — is beautiful and not especially smooth. Expect cobblestones, curbs, narrow lanes, and hilly sections, particularly if you want the classic viewpoint areas.

Outside the Terminal

Outside the terminal area, expect a working port environment first, not instant medieval charm. You will likely see paved roads, port traffic, signs, and a steady flow of fellow passengers heading toward the city.

Beaches Near the Port

Pirita Beach

Tallinn's main beach is a long sandy strip about 6 km northeast of the port, popular with locals in summer. The Baltic water is genuinely cold even in July, and the beach is pebbly in sections. Functional for a short break but not a tropical experience — manage expectations accordingly.

Best for
Full-day visitors who want a brief beach stop combined with the nearby Pirita convent ruins

Local Food & Drink

Tallinn is easy for a casual lunch, coffee, bakery stop, or early drink, especially in and around the Old Town. Expect tourist pricing in the busiest squares and better value a street or two away. If you just want something simple and decent, do not overthink it — this is a very manageable city for an unplanned meal.

Shopping

Shopping here is mostly about Old Town souvenir stores, amber, knitwear, chocolates, ceramics, and small design shops. Pleasant enough if you like browsing, but not a reason to sacrifice sightseeing time on a short call.

Money & Currency

Currency
Euro (EUR)
USD Accepted?
No
Card Payments
Very good. Cards are widely accepted in shops, cafés, and museums.
ATMs
Easy to find in central Tallinn and near transport areas.
Tipping
Not heavily tip-driven. Small rounding up or modest tips for good service are fine.
Notes
Carry a little cash if you want flexibility, but most cruisers can manage the day mostly by card.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
May – September
Avoid
Late autumn through early spring if you dislike cold, wind, and gray weather
Temperature
Roughly 55-72°F / 13-22°C in the main season, often cooler by the water
Notes
Weather can shift quickly. Even in summer, bring a light layer and something windproof.

Airport Information

Airport
Tallinn Airport (Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport)
Distance
About 5-7 km
Getting there
Taxi, app-based ride, and public transport connections via the city
Notes
Very convenient for embarkation or disembarkation compared with many cruise cities.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • If this is your first visit, keep it simple and center your day on Old Town and Toompea rather than chasing too many scattered sights.
  • Walk if you can. Tallinn is one of the better Baltic ports for a DIY day, and the route into town is straightforward.
  • Wear proper shoes. Cobblestones and slopes are the main reason people enjoy this port less than they expected.
  • Start with the viewpoints earlier if your ship arrives with other vessels in port, because the upper Old Town gets crowded fast.
  • Do not count on warm Baltic weather just because it is summer. Bring a layer and expect wind near the harbor.
  • If mobility is an issue, spend your transport budget on getting to the Old Town entrance or upper area, not on an all-day vehicle you do not need.
  • Tourist restaurants right on the main square are fine for convenience, but you often get better value one or two streets away.
