Arrival
Pier or Tender
City centre
3 km from Zakynthos Town center
Best season
May – October
Best for
Sea Turtle Spotting, Beach Swimming, Blue Caves, Shipwreck Viewing

Ships anchor offshore and use tenders to transport passengers to the main port in Zakynthos Town, or occasionally dock at the ferry terminal pier depending on vessel size.

Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Book a morning boat excursion to Navagio and the Blue Caves before the day-tripper rush, then return to town for lunch on the harbor. This covers the island's two standout sights efficiently.
Book Boat Trip to Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) and Blue Caves on Viator
Best Beach
Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) is the iconic shot, but it requires a boat trip. For swimming with less fuss, Gerakas on the southeastern tip is calmer and a designated sea turtle nesting area.
With Kids
Head to Laganas beach — it's sandy, shallow, and close to town. Sea turtle sightings in the surf zone are a genuine highlight for children.
Book Sea Turtle Spotting at Laganas or Gerakas Beach on Viator
Only 3-4 Hours
Walk from the port into Zakynthos Town, grab a coffee on Plateia Solomou, stroll the waterfront, then take a short taxi to Laganas or Kalamaki beach for a swim before returning.
Cheapest Option
Walk into Zakynthos Town (10 minutes), explore the waterfront and Byzantine Museum on foot, then catch a local bus to Laganas beach. Budget roughly 10-15 EUR per person for transport and entrance fees.
What To Avoid
Avoid the pier-side vendors hawking overpriced boat tours — shop them briefly but compare prices in town first. Also skip Laganas beach on a peak-season weekend evening; it becomes a party strip that doesn't suit most cruise-day visitors.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Quick Take

Port Type
Island Beach & Wildlife Port
Best For
Beach lovers, nature-curious travelers, and anyone who wants a laid-back Greek island day without heavy crowds in the town itself
Avoid If
You want a rich cultural or historic city experience — Zakynthos Town was rebuilt after a 1953 earthquake and lacks the old-town depth of Rhodes or Corfu
Walkability
Moderate — the port is right next to Zakynthos Town, which is flat and walkable, but the island's best draws require a taxi, car, or organized trip
Budget Fit
Mid-range — beaches near town are free, but reaching Navagio or booking a boat trip adds cost
Good For Short Calls?
Yes — a half day is enough for town plus one nearby beach; full day needed for Navagio or the north of the island

Port Overview

Ships dock at the main port of Zakynthos Town on the island's eastern coast. The pier puts you practically in the center of town — a 5-10 minute walk along the waterfront reaches the main square and the harbor promenade. Larger vessels sometimes anchor and tender, so check your ship's communication the night before.

The island is best known for two things: Navagio (Shipwreck Beach), the postcard-famous cove accessible only by boat, and the loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) that nest along the southern beaches. Both are legitimate reasons to go ashore, but both require planning and transport beyond the dock.

Zakynthos Town itself was almost entirely destroyed by a 1953 earthquake and rebuilt in a neoclassical style. It's pleasant and functional rather than historically atmospheric. The real value here is the island's natural scenery — cliffs, caves, and beaches — not the town architecture.

For a standard cruise call, the island rewards active planners. If you just wander the port area without organizing transport, you'll end up at forgettable tourist cafes near the pier. The payoff is high if you plan ahead; low if you don't.

Is It Safe?

Zakynthos is safe for tourists. Petty theft is the main concern — keep bags closed in crowded areas near the port and on popular beaches. There's nothing unusual to worry about beyond standard Mediterranean port caution.

If you swim at turtle nesting beaches like Gerakas or Sekania, respect the rope barriers and stay clear of marked nesting zones. It's legally enforced, and wardens are present in season. Night visits to nesting beaches are prohibited — don't attempt them.

Accessibility & Walkability

Zakynthos Town is flat along the waterfront, which helps. However, the main square and many streets have uneven cobblestones and occasional steps that make wheelchair navigation difficult. The port itself has a paved surface but limited formal accessibility infrastructure.

Navagio Beach involves a boat and stairs cut into cliffs — not realistic for limited mobility visitors. Laganas and Kalamaki are flatter, sandy beaches more accessible for most travelers, though beach wheelchairs are not consistently available. Check locally for current support options.

Outside the Terminal

Once you pass through the port gate, you're immediately on the Zakynthos Town waterfront promenade. It's busy when ships are in, with taxi drivers, rental agencies, and a few tour-operator kiosks visible within the first block. It doesn't feel aggressive or overwhelming — just active. Walk left along the harbor for the main town center and Plateia Solomou, or deal with transport logistics right at the gate. The water is visible from the moment you step ashore, which orients you quickly.

Beaches Near the Port

Navagio (Shipwreck Beach)

The most famous beach in Greece by reputation. White pebbles, turquoise water, sheer limestone cliffs, and a rusted shipwreck. Boat-access only, and it gets crowded midday. Arrive early by boat for the best light and fewer people. Swimming is possible but note the pebble floor and swell.

Distance
Boat trip 30-45 minutes from port area
Cost
Included in boat trip cost (15-35 EUR per person)
Best for
Scenery, photography, once-in-a-trip experience

Gerakas Beach

A protected, gently curved sandy beach in the National Marine Park. One of the best chances on the island to see loggerhead turtles without a snorkel tour. Calmer and less commercialized than Laganas. No motorized watersports allowed.

Distance
25-30 minutes by taxi
Cost
Free entry; sunbeds check locally for current rates
Best for
Wildlife interest, families, nature-conscious travelers

Laganas Beach

Long, sandy, with good facilities. The most accessible major beach from the port and popular with all ages in the daytime. Evenings it becomes a resort party strip, which doesn't affect a cruise-day visit. Turtles are present in the water during summer.

Distance
15-20 minutes by taxi
Cost
Free; sunbeds 8-15 EUR for two
Best for
Families, swimmers, those wanting easy access and services

Alykes Beach

A north-coast sandy beach with shallow water, good for children. Less visited than the south and near a salt lake that occasionally attracts flamingos. Quieter character than Laganas.

Distance
30-40 minutes by taxi
Cost
Free; services available locally
Best for
Families, travelers with rental cars exploring the north

Local Food & Drink

Zakynthos Town has a solid lineup of traditional tavernas on and just off the waterfront. Look for places a block or two back from the harbor — they tend to be cheaper and less tourist-facing. Fresh grilled fish, moussaka, and local dishes like sofrito (beef in white wine and garlic sauce) are the things to order. Avoid the obvious tourist-trap menus with photos plastered outside near the port gate.

Local produce to pick up: Zakynthos honey (particularly thyme honey), locally produced olive oil, and mandola (almond sweets). These make good, compact purchases that survive the trip home.

Budget around 12-20 EUR per person for a sit-down lunch with a drink. Faster gyros and souvlaki options near the market area cost 4-7 EUR and are perfectly acceptable for a quick port-day meal.

Shopping

Shopping near the port is mostly tourist-facing: ceramics, olive oil products, jewelry, and beach gear. The quality varies. The covered market area a few blocks inland has more local-feel shops. If you want something genuinely Zakynthian, look for local honey, thyme-based products, or a bottle of Verdea (a local white wine with a slightly oxidized character — distinctive, not for everyone). Avoid buying sea sponges or shell-based products, as their origin and sustainability are rarely clear.

Money & Currency

Currency
Euro (EUR)
USD Accepted?
No
Card Payments
Cards accepted at most restaurants, larger shops, and rental agencies. Some beach vendors and small tavernas are cash only.
ATMs
Several ATMs available in Zakynthos Town, including near the port and on the main square. Reliable but check your bank's foreign transaction fees.
Tipping
Not mandatory but appreciated. Round up or leave 5-10% at sit-down restaurants. Taxi tips are not expected but rounding up is customary.
Notes
Have some euro cash on hand for buses, small beach vendors, and any rural or beach-area purchases.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
May, June, September, October
Avoid
July and August are peak season — hot, crowded, and boats to Navagio are packed
Temperature
25-35°C (77-95°F) in summer; cooler and quieter in shoulder months
Notes
The island gets very dry in summer. Bring sun protection. Winds can occasionally make boat trips to Navagio rough or cancelled — more likely in spring and autumn.

Airport Information

Airport
Zakynthos International Airport (Dionysios Solomos Airport) — ZTH
Distance
Approximately 5 km from the port
Getting there
Taxi is the most practical option. Check locally for current rates. No direct public bus from airport to port.
Notes
If combining a cruise with a pre- or post-stay in Zakynthos, the airport is close enough that arrival logistics are simple. The island works well as a standalone pre-cruise destination.

Getting Around from the Port

Taxi

Taxis wait outside the port gate and are the most practical way to reach beaches, Gerakas, or the southern peninsula. Drivers are used to cruise passengers and often willing to negotiate a round-trip or waiting fare.

Cost: 10-25 EUR one way depending on destination Time: 15-45 minutes depending on destination
Book a transfer 5% off with code TPO5 at checkout
Rental car or scooter

Several rental agencies operate within walking distance of the port. A car gives you flexibility to reach multiple beaches in one day.

Time: Available immediately near the port
Local bus (KTEL)

KTEL buses run from the bus station near the port to major towns including Laganas and Alykes. Infrequent schedules — check times before committing.

Cost: 2-5 EUR per ride Time: Varies; Laganas is about 20 minutes
Book bus tickets
Organized boat trip

The only way to reach Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) and the Blue Caves. Boats depart from the port area and the north of the island.

Cost: 15-35 EUR per person depending on itinerary and duration Time: Half-day to full-day trips
Book ferry tickets
Walking

Zakynthos Town center is flat and walkable from the pier. The harbor promenade, main square, and most town amenities are within 15 minutes on foot.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Book your Navagio boat trip in advance, especially in July and August — morning departures sell out and afternoon light at the cove is harsher.
  • Navagio has a famous cliff-top viewpoint accessible by road — if you're short on time or budget, drive or take a taxi up there for the aerial view without a boat ticket.
  • Gerakas beach has strict rules about turtle nesting zones and closes the beach area from dusk — don't plan an evening visit.
  • If your ship is tendering, factor in extra time getting ashore during busy embarkation periods — build 20-30 minutes into your plan.
  • The KTEL bus to Laganas is cheap and reliable during peak season but check the return times before you go — missing the last bus on a ship day is a stressful and expensive problem.
  • Zakynthos Town is good for a quick lunch and a walk, but don't spend more than 90 minutes there if you have limited time — the island's real value is outside town.
