Port Overview

Cruise ships calling at Zakynthos dock at the main port of Zakynthos Town (also called Zante Town) on the island's eastern coast. Larger ships anchor and tender in; smaller vessels may berth at the quay. Either way, you're deposited close to the town centre, which is convenient. The port area is functional rather than scenic, but Zakynthos Town itself is pleasant — rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake in a low-rise Venetian-influenced style with a relaxed Ionian character.

Zakynthos is one of the Ionian Islands' more popular cruise stops, and its headline draws — Navagio Shipwreck Beach and the Blue Caves — are genuinely spectacular. The honest caveat: these sights are on the opposite end of the island. Getting there takes time and planning. A pure beach day closer to the port is easy and satisfying, but if you want the famous shipwreck view, you need a full day and a plan in place before you step ashore.

In peak summer (July–August), the island is busy and excursion boats fill up. If your ship arrives in shoulder season (May–June or September–October), the island is noticeably more relaxed and the water is still warm. Zakynthos rewards those who come prepared; it can feel rushed and underwhelming for those who wing it.

Is It Safe?

Zakynthos is a safe destination with very low crime risk for tourists. Standard Mediterranean precautions apply: watch your belongings in busy port areas and on crowded beach strips like Laganas. The Laganas strip gets very lively at night but cruise passengers are typically long gone before that becomes relevant.

If you rent a scooter, be aware that the roads in the northern hill areas are narrow, steep, and poorly surfaced in places. Road accidents involving tourists on two-wheelers are the most common safety issue on the island. If you're not an experienced rider, opt for a car or a tour instead.

Accessibility & Walkability

Zakynthos Town's waterfront promenade is flat and paved, and the central squares are manageable for wheelchairs. However, the town becomes hilly quickly once you move away from the seafront, and Bochali castle requires walking on uneven cobblestones. Beaches vary enormously — Gerakas has some accessibility infrastructure, while most others are reached via steps or soft sand without facilities. Navagio beach itself is only accessible by boat, involves steps, and has no accessibility provisions. Passengers with limited mobility will find the town waterfront and flat beach resorts (such as Laganas) the most realistic options.

Outside the Terminal

Coming off the tender or walking out of the port gate, you land on a flat seafront boulevard with an immediate cluster of tourist cafes, excursion sellers, and souvenir shops. It's relatively low-pressure compared to some Greek ports. Turn left and you can walk directly into Zakynthos Town along the waterfront in around 10 minutes. Taxis are usually lined up just outside the gate. There's nothing dramatic or special about the immediate port area itself — the interest starts once you're moving into town or heading out to the island's natural highlights.

Zakynthos Town has a solid range of tavernas and cafes within easy walking distance of the port. Solomos Square and the streets running off it are the best area to eat — you'll find straightforward Greek meze, grilled fish, souvlaki, and local wines from the Ionian region. The waterfront restaurants directly adjacent to the port tend to be overpriced and mediocre; walk five minutes further into town for noticeably better value and quality.

Look out for local specialities: mandolato (nougat), pasteli (sesame honey bars), and Verdea wine — a dry local white that pairs well with seafood and is unique to Zakynthos. A solid taverna lunch of grilled fish, salad, bread, and a carafe of local wine will run $18-30 USD per person depending on location and appetite.

Shopping

Zakynthos Town has the usual Greek island tourist shops — ceramics, olive oil products, local honey, and nougat. Nothing unusual, but the local sweets (mandolato especially) make decent and authentic gifts. Avoid the port-gate shops where prices are inflated; the town centre has more variety and better pricing. There's no high-end shopping here, but for edible souvenirs and handmade crafts, you'll find a few decent independent shops near Solomos Square.
