Top Things To Do
Explore Bruges Old Town
Walk the medieval core: Markt (main square), Belfry tower, canals, St. John's Hospital, and chocolate/beer shops. Bruges is small (walkable in 2–3 hours) and UNESCO-listed. Take the scenic canal boat tour for €8–10 USD if time permits.
⚡ Popular — books out early. Reserve before you sail.
Antwerp Art & Architecture
Belgium's second-largest city features world-class art museums (Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, MAS), 16th-century architecture, and the historic Meir shopping street. More urban and less crowded than Bruges, but requires more travel time.
Belgian Beer & Food in Bruges or Zeebrugge
Sample Trappist ales, Lambics, or local lagers at any café. Pair with moules-frites (mussels and fries), Flemish stew, or Belgian waffles. Bruges has hundreds of options; Zeebrugge has basic cafés near the station.
Book with the ship, or on your own?
Booking independently
- Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
- Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
- Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.
When the ship’s excursion makes sense
- Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
- Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
- The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Port Overview
Zeebrugge is a working cargo and ferry port on the Belgian coast, about 15 km north of Bruges. Most cruise ships dock at the outer pier, which is industrial and functional—not scenic. The port itself offers little reason to explore; cruisers use it as a jumping-off point for Bruges (15 min by train) or Antwerp (45 min by train), both world-class medieval cities.
The real appeal is access to Bruges's UNESCO-listed old town, canals, and Flemish culture, or Antwerp's art museums and architecture. Zeebrugge is also a popular embarkation/disembarkation port for Northern European itineraries. Unless you're catching a flight or boarding a ship, plan to leave the port immediately.
Is It Safe?
Zeebrugge and surrounding areas are safe. The port zone can feel industrial and empty; stick to well-lit paths and main streets. Bruges and Antwerp city centres are very safe for tourists. Standard big-city awareness applies: don't leave valuables visible, avoid isolated areas at night, and use lit, busy streets. Petty theft on crowded trams in Bruges is rare but possible—keep bags close. No serious crime affecting tourists is common.
Accessibility & Walkability
The cruise terminal has basic facilities and level access to departure halls. The walk to Zeebrugge-Knokke train station is 1 km on a mix of paved and unpaved paths; the free shuttle is wheelchair-accessible. Bruges old town is compact but has cobblestones and bridges that may challenge wheelchair users; most main streets are navigable. Antwerp is more modern with better accessibility. Trains have wheelchair spaces; book in advance. If mobility is limited, consider a taxi or organized shore excursion.
Outside the Terminal
You exit into a modern, fairly empty terminal building with cafés and duty-free shops. Outside, you'll see a broad concrete apron, industrial buildings, breakwaters, and the North Sea. Signs point to the free shuttle bus or the 1 km walk to Zeebrugge-Knokke train station. The atmosphere is functional, not welcoming. Most cruisers head straight to the shuttle or taxi queue without lingering.
Beaches Near the Port
Zeebrugge Beach
A grey sand/shingle beach with a concrete promenade, popular locally but industrial and unremarkable. Not worth dedicating port time to.
Local Food & Drink
Belgian food is hearty and excellent. Moules-frites (mussels steamed in white wine, served with thick-cut fries) is the national dish and costs €10–15 USD. Flemish steak and beef stew are warming winter options. Belgian waffles (liège or Brussels style) are everywhere—authentic versions cost €3–5 USD and are worth the queue. Beer is a food experience: Trappist ales (Westvleteren, Orval) and spontaneous-fermented Lambics are world-famous and paired with food thoughtfully. Bruges restaurants range from tourist-trap to excellent; stick to side streets and ask locals. Zeebrugge has cafés and chain restaurants near the station—functional but unmemorable.
Shopping
Bruges has chocolate shops on every corner (Neuzekes, Godiva, artisanal makers); quality varies—buy from small chocolatiers, not chain stores. Belgian lace, beer, and waffles are souvenir staples. The Meir in Antwerp is a major shopping street with high-street brands. Zeebrugge terminal has a duty-free shop, but prices are not competitive. Shopping is not a reason to stop here; Bruges offers better choice and atmosphere.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers
- Buy a train ticket at Zeebrugge-Knokke station, not from the terminal shuttle driver; the station office offers better rates and more options.
- Bruges is 90% walkable and compact; a map or offline Google Maps is enough—no tour required unless you want historical context.
- Mussels are in season September–April; if cruising in summer, opt for other Flemish dishes or confirm availability before ordering.
