City centre
1.5 km from town centre
Best season

Best for
Pearl farming tours, Cable Beach swimming, Indigenous Aboriginal culture, Roebuck Bay wildlife

Ships anchor in Roebuck Bay and use tender boats to transport passengers to the town jetty, or occasionally dock at the inner harbour depending on tidal conditions.

Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Cable Beach followed by a visit to one of the pearl showrooms in Chinatown. Broome is the global centre of South Sea pearl farming — seeing and understanding the product here is genuinely interesting, not just a sales pitch.
Best Beach
Cable Beach — 22 km of red-orange sand meeting turquoise Indian Ocean water. It is genuinely world-class and the single best reason most cruisers go ashore.
With Kids
Cable Beach is the obvious choice — wide, calm in the dry season, and uncrowded. Camel rides along the beach at sunset are a hit if your ship is in late enough, though check locally for current rates.
Only 3-4 Hours
Grab a taxi or rideshare straight to Cable Beach (about 10 minutes from town), swim or walk the red-sand shoreline, then head back through Chinatown for a coffee and a look at the pearl showrooms before returning to the ship.
Cheapest Option
Walk Chinatown, browse the pearl shops (no obligation to buy), grab lunch at a local café, and arrange a shared taxi or bus to Cable Beach. Budget around AUD $30-50 per person for the day excluding meals.
What To Avoid
Don't spend most of your shore day in the immediate port area — there is very little there. Also skip sunset camel rides if your ship departs in the afternoon; timing rarely works out and the tours are expensive for what they deliver.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Port Overview

Broome sits on the edge of the Kimberley in remote northwest Western Australia, about as far from anywhere as you can get. Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers into Roebuck Bay — the tender process can be slow, so factor that into your planning. The town itself is compact and relaxed, built around a pearling history that still drives the local economy and culture today.

Cable Beach, roughly 6 km from the Chinatown precinct, is the headline attraction and deserves its reputation. The red-sand beach stretching for kilometres with warm, clear Indian Ocean water is legitimately one of Australia's best. Getting there requires transport but it is simple and not expensive by Australian standards.

Broome works well for a half day or a relaxed full day. It is not a port that rewards rushing or over-scheduling. If you are expecting resort infrastructure or a lively dining and entertainment scene, reset those expectations — this is a small, remote town and everything moves at a Kimberley pace. That said, the pearl showrooms in Chinatown are genuinely worth a look even if you are not buying.

Is It Safe?

Broome is a safe destination by any reasonable measure. The main practical risk ashore is the heat — temperatures regularly exceed 35°C in the dry season and the sun is intense. Carry water, wear sunscreen, and do not underestimate how quickly you can dehydrate at Cable Beach.

Ocean swimming at Cable Beach is generally safe in the dry season (April to October) but check for any seasonal jellyfish or marine stinger warnings before entering the water. Box jellyfish and other stingers can be present at certain times of year, particularly in the wet season. Crocodile warnings apply to some waterways around Broome — stick to Cable Beach for swimming and do not enter estuaries or mangrove areas.

Accessibility & Walkability

Broome town centre and the Chinatown precinct are relatively flat and manageable for most mobility levels, though footpaths are uneven in places. Cable Beach has soft, deep sand that is genuinely difficult in a wheelchair or for anyone with limited mobility — access to the waterline is not straightforward. Some beach wheelchair hire may be available locally but check locally for current rates and availability. The tender process itself involves steps and movement between vessels, which can be challenging for passengers with significant mobility limitations — check with your cruise line before committing to a tender shore call.

Outside the Terminal

The tender landing puts you at the small boat harbour near the town centre. There is usually a small information presence on busy ship days and taxis line up close by. The immediate area is unremarkable — you will want to move quickly either toward Chinatown (a short walk or taxi) or directly to Cable Beach. Do not linger at the landing expecting things to open up — the action is elsewhere.

Beaches Near the Port

Cable Beach

The standout beach in Broome and by most measures one of the best in Australia. The combination of red-orange sand, warm clear water, and an enormous open sky is hard to match. In the dry season (April-October) conditions are excellent for swimming. Facilities including cafés, showers, and sun loungers are available near the main access point.

Distance
6 km from town centre / 10-15 min by taxi
Cost

Best for
All cruisers — this is the primary reason to come ashore

Town Beach (Roebuck Bay)

The closest beach to the tender landing, sitting on Roebuck Bay rather than the open Indian Ocean. The water here is murkier and tidal — not really a swimming beach. Worth a brief look for the sunset views or to watch the 'staircase to the moon' phenomenon if timing aligns, but do not come here expecting a swim.

Best for
Sunset viewing, easy access, staircase to the moon (seasonal)

Local Food & Drink

Broome's dining scene is small but decent for a remote town. You will find good café food, fresh barramundi, and local Kimberley beef without trouble. The Chinatown precinct has the densest cluster of cafés and restaurants — Carnarvon Street is the right street to walk. Expect Australian café prices, which means AUD $18-28 for a main course at a sit-down restaurant.

Cable Beach has a couple of casual beachside options near the main access point — fine for a cold drink or a sandwich after swimming. Nothing exceptional but convenient. Do not expect elaborate seafood restaurants at the beach itself.

If your ship is in late enough, the sunset at Cable Beach followed by dinner in Chinatown is the obvious and genuinely enjoyable local sequence.

Shopping

Pearl jewellery is the only shopping Broome does at any serious level and it does it well. South Sea pearls farmed in the Kimberley waters are among the world's finest. The main showrooms — Paspaley, Kailis, and Cygnet Bay — all operate in Chinatown and range from accessible pieces at a few hundred Australian dollars to significant jewellery at prices you will remember. Staff are knowledgeable and low-pressure in the better shops.

Beyond pearls, there is a small selection of Aboriginal art, Kimberley crafts, and the usual Australian souvenir items. Nothing here you could not find elsewhere in Australia, so if pearls are not on your agenda, do not spend too long on shopping.

Money & Currency

Currency
Australian Dollar (AUD)
USD Accepted?
No
Card Payments
Very good. Visa and Mastercard accepted almost everywhere. Contactless payment is standard across cafés, taxis, and shops.
ATMs
ATMs available in the Chinatown precinct and near major shops. Not abundant — withdraw cash early in the day if needed.
Tipping
Not expected or required in Australia. Tipping is entirely optional and not standard practice at cafés or restaurants.
Notes
Australia is an expensive country. Budget AUD $80-150 per person for a comfortable full day ashore including transport, food, and minor entry fees. Pearl purchases are an entirely separate budget consideration.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
April to October (dry season). Low humidity, sunny days, comfortable temperatures around 25-32°C. This is when cruise ships typically call.
Avoid
November to March (wet season). Extreme heat, high humidity, cyclone risk, and some roads and tours become unavailable. Very few cruise calls during this period.
Temperature
25-34°C with low humidity and reliable sunshine during dry season ship calls
Notes
Even in the dry season, the Broome sun is fierce. UV index is extreme — sunscreen and a hat are non-negotiable at Cable Beach.

Airport Information

Airport
Broome International Airport (BME)
Distance
Approximately 3 km from town centre
Getting there
Taxi or rideshare to town centre takes around 10 minutes. Some hire car companies operate from the airport.
Notes
Broome is occasionally used as an embarkation or disembarkation point for expedition-style cruises. If pre- or post-cruise stays are planned, the airport is straightforward and close. Direct flights connect Broome to Perth, Darwin, and some east coast capitals.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Tender operations in Roebuck Bay can run slow on busy ship days — get in the queue early if you have a full-day tour booked, especially for Willie Creek Pearl Farm which has a fixed departure time.
  • The Staircase to the Moon — moonrise reflected across Roebuck Bay mudflats — is a genuine natural spectacle but only occurs on specific nights around the full moon between March and October. Check whether it coincides with your visit before getting excited.
  • Hire a car if you are a group of three or four — it is more cost-effective than taxis for multiple stops and gives you the flexibility to reach Gantheaume Point and Cable Beach on your own schedule.
  • Check the tide times for Gantheaume Point before going. The dinosaur footprints are only visible at very low tide and it is a wasted trip otherwise.
  • Pearl quality varies significantly across Broome showrooms. If you are seriously considering buying, visit two or three shops to calibrate pricing and quality before committing.
  • Book pearl farm tours and hire cars before your ship arrives — Broome's services are limited in capacity and fill quickly on major ship call days.
